    Hey Phil....that was really enjoyable. This is Mike from Columbus. I used to be a claims manager for a major national insurance carrier. My line of business was workers' compensation law and claims management. One of the best parts of my job was being given extensive tours throughout factories, mills, foundry, etc. and learning about the individual jobs that were done within the operation. I was always fascinated with how much "old school knowhow" and classic machinery often times competed with new technology and new electronics. From what I saw at Horween they still use all the old processes and equipment to do their job of creating one of the best leathers in the world. For the one gentleman who was shaving off the backside of a piece of shell I almost have to close my eyes as his fingers get so very close to the "nip points" . He obviously is a master craftsman with many years of experience to do what he does....and he makes it look so easy (which it obviously is not) I think it's great the special relationship Ashland has with Horween. Your DNA Phil is Horween having worked there for so long. The fact that your shop is a stone's throw away from the factory provides you with incredible opportunities to get the best leather in the country. I love my "Frank the Enforcer" in English Tan Dublin and it's so cool to me that I get to see where it's made and all that goes into it. Pls extend my thanks to Skip Horween for allowing you to be able to show us this footage. So very interesting and a real credit to both Ashland and Horween. Cheers ! Mike from Columbus.

      Yeah after filming that I met up with the maintenance chief... he was aware of this leak but they are super short handed in the maintenance department (and elsewhere) right now with the effects of the pandemic

    Neat tour of Horween. A long line of tradition and quality. Question: the cut off discarded scrap pieces we see in the video--are they at all usable for any small goods products?

    Have a question, was very curious if car interiors get 160 degrees in summer seasons, and that would damage wallets, how can leather interiors of cars not turn into potato chips also? Is it because they are so corrected? Or are they treated to survive heat in some way? Have to make sure I never leave my new wallet in the car in the summer!

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  3 года назад

      The chrome tanned leathers used in car interiors are resistant to heat. Veg tanned leather (shell cordovan and others) are not resistant to heat

    Very cool video Phil..i can only imagine how good it smells in there

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  3 года назад

      It smells good and bad. The smell really depends on what floor you are on. The basement smells like a barn in some areas...smells like cooking tree bark in others. The cordovan floor smells like actual heaven

    I like your wallets. Are they as thick when folded as they look on video?

    • @AshlandLeather
      @AshlandLeather  2 года назад

      Some of the wallets are made from thicker leather. Generally speaking I try to make them as thin as possible but some people prefer thick. I can work with you to find a thick/thin wallet that works for you
