  • Oh, he wears the number 20,
He will take us to victory,
And when he’s running down the left wing,
He’ll cut inside and score for LFC.
    He’s a lad from Portugal,
Better than Figo don’t you know,
    Oh, his name is Diogo!

My girlfriend died in the same way 12 years ago and it's devastating. The dissonance that occurs when hearing the news, the disbelief, the unnaturally swift rip of normality. When it's someone about whom no one has a bad thing to say, regardless of the tribalism of this sport - it is, the truest sense of the word, a tragedy.

No player is gonna take up 20 as everyone knows retiring it is the right thing to do. He knew he was living the dream and was loving every minute. He was an undersized underdog who we could all identify with especially facing Man City. He was a fighter, to get into the team, to win trophies. He regularly scored headers he'd no right to get to, he'd slalom his way past defenders, he was a jack of all trades apart from his will to win, the team came first. It was so honest, heartfelt and his way of letting the supporters know he shared our dreams❤l

Hey Laurence, I feel your pain and everyone else's pain here. Four days on now and it still hurts, I know this pain will not dissipate... Now my family lost our cousin 20 years ago in the same manner which took Diogo and his brother, it still haunts me the shock and the pain we all felt that night......
I just hope Rute and her children can recover and that they recieve all the support they need because its going to be so so tough for them and my heart is breaking just thinking about it 💔😭
From a Liverpool fans point of view, I'm distraught knowing I'll never get to celebrate Diogo scoring or even belting out his song when he does hit the back of the net! 😢

I truly hope the club continues to pay his wages to his family for the rest of his contract. It may not bring him back, but it’s the least we can do for the people he loved. They’ve lost far more than money could ever cover, they’ve lost a radiant and a beautiful soul.
I pray his soul finds peace. And I just know… he’s out there, smiling, cheering us on from the other side.

Wolves fan here. Diogo Jota will forever be adored by us, he came to us when we were a struggling championship side and the conversations were all focused on whether a portugese player from a top league could cut it in the championship. He excelled beyond all expectations that embodied the character he was, a warrior who had not come through the easy way at all who seemed to improve the more he was fouled as tackles bounced off him. We will cherish the memories he delivered us forever especially the derby goal vs the villa and the goal against united in the quarter final. The reception our faithful would give jota was always positive because of the good faith and relationship he'd built with the fans. Thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones today and as ruben neves said "you only truly lose people when you forget them. I wont forget you (jota)"

He was a real blessing for the world of football and he goes down as a legend of the game. 136 goals & 66 assists for LFC and his illustrious career. Those statistics are genuinely phenomenal if one looks at the fact that he suffered two major injuries during his tenure at Liverpool. As a massive Liverpool fan who was born and raised in Wolverhampton, it was great to see Diogo Jota join Liverpool from Wolves. I always appreciated his ability but moreover he was a great individual. Which in today's age we sometimes take for granted.
Absolutely gutted to hear this news today. Thoughts go out to everyone connected to him & his brother. As a father of 2, I can't even comprehend leaving behind my young family.
I always got the impression Diogo was a great human being who enjoyed and appreciated life. You could see it in the way he played and the way he celebrated, the cheekiness he brought to the team.
He always built last connections with people and even after he left for Liverpool he used to come back and catch up with Wolves players in the local restaurant.
Gonna miss our number 20. I think we should retire his shirt.

Thank you for your kind words Laurence. His legacy will live on. I am so sad for his family. His parents lost their sons, his wife lost her childhood sweetheart, and three children lost their father. A wonderful man who brought so much joy to the lives of so many. Sleep tight Diogo and Andre ❤️

Saw this in the morning and have been checking throughout the day, just didn't feel real. Absolutely gutted, the perspective of Diogo's new wife and life partner, the three kids now without a father, his brother, being also newly married and their parents losing both their sons. It's a lot, it has made me cherish my family more today and realise how lucky I am to have what I have. I don't know much about André but I'd imagine he was every bit of the man his incredible brother was. Humble, passionate and an all round great role model. Thoughts and prayers for all of the family, nothing but love. Thank you for everything Jota, YNWA.

Diogo was just the essense of a good guy. I remember watching him play Trent at Fifa and thinking hes such a sound guy. He had skill and strength beyond his physical size and a heart that beat in time with the fans. Gonna miss him so much. RIP Diogo.

I wanted to leave this comment here because i’ve watched you for a long time & this is the best video i’ve seen on the topic.
I’m a Manchester United fan, I was on holiday in Portugal in 2022, Jota had scored in 2 of the last 3 games between Liverpool & United, both in separate games at Old Trafford.
I was wearing a retro United shirt with Nani on the back, and I was outside a restaurant waiting for a few of my mates, and what I assume was a Portuguese man tapped my shoulder & went “Naniiii.” We chatted for a bit & that was that, funny interaction.
Later on that night, I bumped into the same fella who had now branded me as “Nani.” He introduced me as such to a few of his mates, one of which was Diogo Jota. I told him that I was at the 2nd game at Old Trafford that he scored at, was 5-0, and he, (whilst laughing) said “At least I stopped after the 2nd”., he was a really friendly guy & we chatted for a few minutes just about football, fifa & stuff, I was heartbroken to read the news this morning.
Just can’t stop thinking about his wife & his beautiful little family, really hope that they’re able to get through this. Diogo Jota will live long in the hearts of his loved ones, but the entire football family too.
    ❤️

RIP to a True Knight of the Kop,
    You'll never walk alone!!
    Forever to be missed!
By far one of the best footballing minds to bless the beautiful game!!
    Guiding us now from above!
Embodied everything it meant to be SCOUSE!
Shown us all how to be the light in the dark!
The smile will forever be etched in to our folk lore!
Now we must carry the memory of this legend in our hearts each day!!
    Diogo José Teixeira da Silva
    04/12/1996 - 03/07/2025
Honarary Scouser & Knight of The Spion Kop!
Oh, he forever wears the number 20,
He always took us to victory,
And when he ran down the left wing,
He would cut inside and score for LFC.
He was a lad from Portugal,
WORLDS Better than Figo don’t you know,
    Oh, his name is DIOGO!

My favourite memory was v Leicester at Anfield, League Cup. Leicester fans had being doing their usual anti scouser chants, Diogo showed us he got Liverpool as a city, giving it large to the Leicester fans after his pen, telling them to f off. To him and his brother RIP
