‘Angels Gather Here’ follows Jacki Trapman’s journey back to her hometown of Brewarrina to celebrate her parents, Bill and Barbara’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.
Going home is never easy for Jacki. Amidst the family celebrations she reflects on her own personal struggle to survive alcoholism and the tragic loss of her two children to become a university educated health worker who now uses her story to inspire her community.
Jacki explains that the whole town’s invited to the party. Down at the Bre Community Hall women prepare the food, the kids decorate the hall and the men dig a huge barbecue pit as they reflect on the achievements of their 85 year old aunty and uncle.
As we travel home with Jacki, we learn of the Trapman’s strong connections to Brewarrina, a small country town in the far west of NSW and historically an intertribal meeting place for thousands of years.
We learn of the Trapman’s past and that Jacki’s mother was among the stolen generation, taken from her mother at the age of 8. She survived the Cootamundra Girls home and was forced to work as a “slave” in Sydney’s North Shore, only to return home as a young woman. As we learn of Barbara’s stolen childhood, Jacki examines the resulting effects on the Trapman family through the generations.
The film celebrates the love, culture and remarkable resilience of the Trapman family. Jacki’s inspiring story symbolises the strength, dignity and resilience of many Aboriginal people in the face of adversity.
