The Venice Beach Canals in Los Angeles California

- A tour of the last remaining canals in Venice Beach California. Many of the streets in Venice were once canals, and only one small section of canals are still around today. Officially known as the "The Venice Canal Historic District" it's comprised of six canals, approximately one and a half miles in length, and fifty feet in width, and are laid out in a grid. Nine footbridges provide access within the canals. The canals’ ocean water comes from the Marina del Rey and is controlled by tidal gates. The Canals are listed on the National and City of Los Angeles Registry of Historical Places.
The canals were built in 1905 as a private real estate development, Short Line Beach Venice Canals Subdivision No. 1, to capitalize on Abbot Kinney’s “Venice of America,” a canal development and amusement center to the north. Both canal projects, built with a lot of speed and too little sturdy construction had fallen into disrepair by the early 1920’s and all the canals were scheduled to be filled in, but the Venice canals were spared. The canals are a designated wildlife preserve where you can see Herons, Egrets, Mergansers, Coots, Cormorants, Sea Gulls, Pelicans, sometimes the Least Tern, and domesticated Mallard ducks.

I grew up in Venice before the Marina Del Rey was built. Love the Venice Beach canal! A friend of mine used to live there and I loved going out on her little boat in the late afternoon it was very relaxing and quiet! Also did some paintings there also!
The Venice Canals are pretty neat!
Really enjoying these walking tours, thanks Chris!
Awesome Elizabeth!
Hi Chris. Thank you for the wonderful walking tour and the great history of the Venice Beach Canals. Such a nice and peaceful way to enjoy a relaxing walk. Hopefully many people will view this video and get a chance to enjoy the canals. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thanks James! Yes. I hope people can see Venice has a nicer side :)
Throw back 1979. Those canals were full of trash and shopping carts. Those bungalows most were dilapidated there's a lot of empty lots. Picture this now look at the place.
I had no idea about the canals! Thanks for sharing Chris
I'm Glad you did this Video
Thanks!
Thanks Martin!
awesome vid !!! I had no idea there were canals... I love the fact that there are walkways too. In Ventura Harbor, there are some homes on the water, but you can't see them unless you are a boat or kayak. Thanks Chris !
Thanks Joe! Yeah. This is a really unique spot!
Love this so much, had no idea it was there! We'll have to see it on our next trip that way.
I hope you get to see it in person soon :)
If I would go to Venice Beach than personally I would skip Boardwalk and go right to Venice Canal. It's like you said it is more quiet. And I think it is beautiful and idyllic. Perfect for a day walk and after that go for some lunch. Beautiful place and thank you for showing this, and telling the history behind it! This is one of the many thing I like about your videos, you show things that I had no idea about that existed in California like this canals. It is fun to see places that are different and unique.
Thanks Tatjana! Yes. This is the relaxing side of Venice for sure!
Beautiful
Thank you so, so much for your informative tour of the Venice canals. We went for a stroll there today because we saw your video of them.
Awesome Dixie! Did you enjoy your visit today?
@@YellowProductions Very much so thank you... Then we went to the 3rd street promenade. It was a great day. Love all of your videos.
So cool!!!!
How interesting!!! Now I want to go visit!!
Check it out Victoria!
This is beautiful. I was there twenty five years ago. I had no idea, we went to the beach.
Now you know where to go on your next visit! :)
Thank you for this video. I had absolutely no idea they were canals in Venice Beach... And nice homes. I was just to wear the homeless situation at the beach.
Yeah. Venice has some nice parts.. you wouldn't know it from watching the news
Love the canals!
Still a mostly "hidden gem" in Venice I think!
Hi Chris, I made it to the Venice Canals this time, and was here last month. I love how the temperature is cooler here. Thanks to your video, I put this place on my list and visited 👍
Awesome Marlee
The canals look very peaceful especially compared to the boardwalk. That looks like the perfect spot to go for a nice, quiet walk!
Yes. Good to decompress after the insanity of the boardwalk! :)
Thanks for your video, whit this the people who Is watch this can see how Is this place, i wanna go soon
Thank you Chris! I need to check this neighborhood out next time I visit Venice Beach. CAB😊
Right on CAB!
GREAT PLACE THANKS
Thanks Linda
Hermosos canales.mi deseo es conocer algún día Venice beach
Fun video! Like everyone else, I didn't know about the canals 😆All those visits to the beach and I missed this 😟I tried finding rental info and pics for that apartment you showed, and apparently, they only put signs in front. Of course, the price reflects the location. I'm not in the area anymore but hope to visit again. I'm catching up on your great playlist.😀
Subscribed because of all those L.A. walking videos. Keep it up.
Awesome Sylvio! Welcome to Yellow Productions! Plenty more LA walking tours coming up!
Awesome job Chris I had great time on comic con today.
Right on Adam!
I know it great to be back at comic con
great zooming action 🎬 👏
Thanks Gary!
You could check out Yorba Linda’s East Lake Village- a MUST during Christmas time!!! And well worth it year round as well!
Thanks for the tip
AWESOME. I want to go to there. The homes look so cool. 🥰 I wish we'd seen someone availing themselves of the canal, leisurely rowing their little boat. What an absolutely cool-looking place to live. The colors, everything. Even the apartment building has managed to not be a blight, which apartment buildings can often be. I wanna rent a place there for a couple months.
Thank you for your video and for your honest commentary. It's sad to realize what's going on just a few blocks from all that beauty. I've seen several videos detailing the problem in Los Angeles. Some of it is quite nightmarish. I don't know where it's all leading, but I wish the residents of the canal area well.
Thanks Raymond!
Awesome video Chris, gutted I missed the canals last time I was there!
Now you know what to see for next time :)
💛💛💛
No idea it was there... another beautiful place to visit once the USA opens up again!
A hidden gem for sure!
Thank you for this tour! Do the canals serve a drainage management purpose or are they more for boats & aesthetics? Looks gorgeous.
Boats and aesthetic at this point
Thank you so much for this great video and beautiful walking tour of Venice, Chris! I have always wanted to tour this area. I think I may have even done a cursory tour years ago, but if so, don’t remember much about it. Were you able to easily find parking? Where did you park, and did you have to pay for it? Want to prepare, for when I go up there sometime. Thanks! 😊
I parked in the city lot in front of the Venice pier. It's at the end of Washingtom Blvd where it meets the sand. Prices vary depending upon the season and weekend vs weekday but I paid $9 for parking. I usually have the best of luck finding parking in this lot
@@YellowProductions Oh yeah! I think you did mention that in the beginning of the video.
163 Days we must wait to see this nice canal. Greetings
163 days will go by quick!
Nice place to a new Yellow Productions's studio :)
I'd like that Gilberto! :)
Appreciate the sound quality, you just look like you’re on set which fits in with LA - maybe a little unusual looking but worth it for me 😂
I appreciate that!
💜💜💜
Thanks Nancy
Chris, are you familiar with the show Simon and Simon from the 80s that was set in San Diego? I re-watched it on Netflix and noticed that the filming location used for AJ's house is one of the houses on the Venice canals.
Neat! But in regards to me. No. I never caught that show in the 80s
Hi, I know it's not for swimming but how deep is the water if you know? Thanks.
From looking at it I'd guess between 3 and 6 feet depending upon the tide
My coworkers took pictures here, it looks beautiful. I've never paid $7k a month for rent though, that's insane.
Yeah. That rent is way insane!
How many mile walk?
$7k a month? wow
where do they park there cars
There are alleys on the back of the houses
5:50 is that the blue chick from the Fifth Element?
No gondolas?
No.. not for rent. You can get a Gondola ride in Long Beach in the Naples neighborhood though
@@YellowProductions i would expect to see gondolas there considering that it’s the canals at Venice beach.anyway, next time i go to Vegas I’ll go to the Venetian and take a ride there!
Does he really need the huge 1990s NFL head set?
Yes :)
Went there last year and was quite disappointed, it all looked a bit sad , colorless and shabby😢
She lives on love street...
You just gave the blue-haired girl her 15 minutes of fame!
Hah
When I first saw the icon I thought "CANALSINLA"?! WTF is "CANAL-SINLA"? Then I looked at the photo....
Hah
That headset is ridiculous. Get with the times buddy. Good video tho. 📹
It's a $400 headset.. . Its with the times.. super noise canceling.. designed for sportscaster. It looks ridiculous yes. But I sacrifice my looks to provide good quality on the videos for you :)
Dude there's no more homeless tents on the beach they cleaned it all up you need to fix that saying that part it all gone they are not playing around anymore so Venice is all cleaned up on the beach
Dude I was just there on Friday and while there aren't as many as there used to be. There still are a ton of homeless and tents on the streets and alleys right next to the boardwalk. Like 30 feet away
@@YellowProductions ummm well I know but no one the boardwalk they clean it all up kicked them off
@@YellowProductions I was wondering if it possible I could use someone boat did you ever ask someone about that part let me know thanks
Santa Monica was the dumpsite for strung out, homeless. Nobody is cleaning it up. Based on July 2022...
