- The use of a diagonal peen hammer can be much more ergonomic than a cross peen or straight peen hammer. Today I will start the work on a double diagonal peen hammer as a custom order request. part one

Whoop whoop John is getting to the big time now almost 50k subs!!! Come on people share him up and let's get him there :-) keep up the great work John
This is just the best; honest and professional, even modest. My favourite channel. Thanks for your uploads
I AM LEARNING BEYOND MY WILDEST IMAGINATION! BECAUSE OF THIS GUSHI8NG INPUT I NOW MUST INEST IN A POWER HAMMER.
Have to admit, I love the sound of the power hammer and watching how gentle it can be under the right foot. Excellent video, can’t wait for the second. 👍🏼
Seriously John, every upload you make I wonder why you only have so few subscribers. I guess today people don't appreciate content from which they can learn. In contrast to the spark and awe channels (which I'll happily call the discovery channel effect), you stay true to your craft and seem intent to teach. I LOVE it and I hope you keep up the good work.
Not to put you in a spotlight, but you've just become my first supported channel. Just simply because you deserve it. I know it's not much, but I just hope to see you grow and keep those video's coming. I've learned so much from your content alone and the way you present it reminds me of those few teachers I had in live that actually could engage me and I try to apply that same enthusiasm to my own blacksmithing demos.
It takes time to grow. Some of the channels with large subscriber bases have been at it much longer than I have.
Very well said Patrick D. Thank you.
Hey bud. So far hammer is looking great. Thx for using s7 it should be awesome to work with. Can’t wait to play with it. Lol. Thx again for sharing .....Paul.
Glad you like it. It should be in the mail mid week.
Thank you. No rush
Love that hammer. I'll struggle the old fashioned way. Lol
Your camera work and lighting are fantastic. I know you put a huge ammount of effort into these videos and it shows. Just wanna let you know how much i appreciate it.
Funny my buddy and I were just talking about you making a hammer yesterday. I would have never thought you'd get that round slice of S7 to shape into a hammer billet let alone get as far as you did. Great job John! Looking forward to part II
Power hammer do make some things more accessible.
It's the video everyone has been waiting for! 😀👍
That is a big hammer John so your lucky to the say Mac . :)
The double diagonal peen hammer is on the top of my list of hammers to make if and when I get my new forge up and running?? Still not happy with my forge burners ! Good job. Be well and be safe
Hopefully you will do a video when you make it Bill.
Looking good John!
Always enjoy your videos.
Wow that moved and shaped much faster than I thought it would. To be honest I would have thought one would have to put it on the round in a press to squish it that fast.
Great video sirSir and what a hammer that new air hammer is ++!!
Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out
Cool hammer cant wait for part 2
love the new apron!!
Have you ever counted how many hammers you have ? The new power hammer works soooo well. You must enjoy every time you use it now. I know I do, LOL. Great post. I sure enjoyed it !
No, but I would guess around 30
Great video! Heading to part 2!!
Excellent!!
Thanks John great video on making the hammer.
Love the emblem on your apron, very nice!
I got a huge shout out on wrangler star for johns channel let’s hope lots of new folks get over here !!! It’s even a highlighted comment ! I sure hope it boosts things !
Thanks
Black Bear Forge I just hope it gets you more subs !
Great video, love to see you using the power hammer, bring on video No 2.
Great video John. If I had a power hammer I reckon I could follow it 🤠
That happened quickly, wow!
Nice 👍👍👍👍
Nice work on the hammer. Looks very good so far, and I can see how that would be a bit to a pain to keep squared up. 👍
Hi As I am a beginner I (not corectly acerate angle) made one sided ping hammer.
Made mine from a 2 lb ping ball ping I flattened the ball and I did not get 90 degrees off set but more like 40 * .But I loving It as I can stand in my spot and hit to lenghten or flip to my rounding head side.
Thanks again
Nice Apron - looks very similar to one I saw in a video yesterday! :)
)
I subscribed what a great job I so want a go even if I don't make anything just bash some hot metal lol
It's more addicting than coffee
@@BigWillSD 😂😂
I'm green with hammer envy.....
Could you use more of a tapered to round slitting punch to save more material. Thanks for all you do, the content is great and very helpful.
There is so little material lost this way I'm not sue it matters to much. But I am sure you could
Nice to see one of these made. Makes me wish I had a way of easily changing the shape of large pieces of steel
Hmmm...me thinkest thou needs slaves....
ROFLMBO YESSSSS!
couldnt resist, even though minions would be a more betterest term lol
Daniel Crawford I think the proper terminology is “apprentice” :)
An apron around the power hammer lower die might be handy.
Liam Hoffman is a master of using a press making axes and hammers. He has real good finesse
Hey Big John, would it not have been faster to rought it to shape on the press from the disk then start to shape it on the hammer and do the punching, presses are good for moving massive amount of material quickly according to roy from Christ Centered iron, I do belive.
or do you just want to practice using the big sea mac hammer
I too would like to know why you chose to use the Say Mac instead of the press John. Just to learn more about the pros and con of each tool.
Faster, perhaps. But much less control and ability to adapt continuously during forging. But also as you mention, I good chance to see what can be done using primarily the Say-Mak
Hmm ok food for thought
Can all this be done by hand? I have no power tools except an angle grinder and a drill. My forge is a coffee can forge
Yes, but I doubt the coffee can forge will heat that large of a piece of steel
hey you have some sweet videos
but sometimes they are hard to with you are working on
try turning the brighten down a little
Hi John, when you say "modified", did you just grind down your original hammer? or did you actually have to heat and forge the head to it's new shape?
I believe it was just reshaping the existing one since the sledge already had an octagonal cross section, it is easy to set it on the 45s.
I flattened the ends by forging
As John has said , forged.
Another way to think is to imagine how much weight you'd loose as well as how long to grind that much off.
That's the advantage of forging, you can get close to net shape while minimising material loss.
@@markschweter6371 You're absolutely right. Just exploring an option that hopefully doesn't involve blowing out my shoulder. Wish I would have gotten into smithing 20 years ago.
You can grind a hammer down to make a diagonal pein, you will of course loose more mass by grinding than forging but if you ended up with a 3 pound hammer from a 4 pound hammer are you going to be worried? That’s the question, But lighter hammer may help with a buggered shoulder.
Hi John can you provide a link to where you bought your flutagon/atlantic33 tool steel
Jan Muchnikoff jan961@mac.com
Mr. Switzer, how do you get on your waiting list for custom commision work?
www.waitlistr.com/lists/dcc6d292/black-bear-forge-wait-list
When will you do the 8pound ?
Hard to say
@@BlackBearForge 😊
At any time in this video where you using the power hammer at full power at its hardest hitting force
I don't think so. At full force it is easy to get carried away.
John what is h gas coming of the piece of metal
Are you refering to the flames from the coal dust used as a punch release?
@@BlackBearForge In the video when you are on the air hammer, before making the hole I see a bluish gas come off the metal I have not seen that before. I was wondering if it could be some coating on the metal. 4:43 in the video is a example
Also I have not been able to get back to your email because I lost it. my pritcher hole is 3/4" and a standard hold down is just fine.
I think what you are seeing is an odd light reflection off of the camera lens. My email is switz@mindspring.com
perhaps missing something obvious here. If its a double peen hammer with the diagonal peens on both ends, why does one end work for drawing out and the other for spreading? Wouldnt they both spread?
In use the peens address the work at 90 degrees to each other. That means on is inline with the work for spreading and the other is perpendicular to the work for drawing out.
Do you think 4140 would work for this project?
Yes, I frequently use 4140 for hammers
How do I go about buying a hammer from you?
The best way is to sign up for my wait list at www.waitlistr.com/lists/dcc6d292/black-bear-forge-wait-list
I want to go out to the shop and do this so bad, but I'm on house arrest after breaking three ribs last week. If my bride caught me I'd get in deep trouble.....I think I'll go drill out a couple of monkey tools or throw some bits into the tumbler.....
Experience tells me that hurts a good bit
whats the point of a hammer with two faces that are the same...why not leave one a flat face so that then you can easily switch over to smoothing out the marks left from the peen...
Listen carefully from the beginning to 0:00:38.
He describes its use succinctly.
I know it sounds kind of weird, but if you hold it one way the peen is straight in line with the work, spreading the material sideways flip the hammer over while still holding it, and now the peen is crossways which will draw the material out lengthwise
@@shadetreeforge well stated, easy to grasp that idea.
Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out
For a general forging hammer that would be the ideal. But this is a special purpose hammer. While the faces are the same profile they are opposites in use. One side is like a cross peen for drawing out and the other is like a straight peen for spreading. I only use these when there is significant material to move.
The die of a rounding hammer has a function just like a cross peen or a regular flat face you should not have a "favorite" hammer nor should you have "hated" hammer at least not based on face shape and limiting your self to one hammer is ridiculous unless you work specifically on one thing only. Also refusing to use something useful simply because its popular and " EVERYBODY" is using it is childish.
