It’s so nice to see a restoration done right, it’s far to often you see someone skipping on something and then to me the car always looks half done. In fact this is one of the few restoration videos I’ve recently watched all the way through, Because I didn’t get annoyed by someone cutting corners or bodging something leading to me clicking off the video. And the reason for that is because none of that happed in this video. Well done keep up the excellent work.

Great to see you making progress with Melvin. It's good that you have been able to find some new old stock parts amongst your stash.
For the engine - it would be very interesting if you could use Melvin's original block and change the pistons etc. What an interesting project!

TBF It would be better if he didn't. Unless it's the early block where the liners are retained by o rings it's a pain in the backside to get them to seal correctly. Get a good 1.4 16V, give it a top end rebuild and change the crank bearings and it would be good to go.

I can embrace the idea of keeping the drivabilty, instead going off limits with raw power. To much is to much and nothing is nicer to drive than A wolf in sheep's clothing. ( sleeper, is now the fashion term😂
Yre absolutely a topper. Looking forward to see more of this series!

I like the sound of your plans for Melvin, Same sort of plans I had for my 1275GT, whisch I never got around to of course. I love the idea of standard looking but with a bit of extra umpf.

Regarding the engine, inspired by Chris Conrad’s 1 litre K series engined MG Midget Bonneville record car, in idle moments I’ve often wondered about building a K series with a 1.1 crank and 1.6/1.8 size pistons with a VVC/VHPD solid cam head for a short stroke 1300 screamer. I’ve no idea if it’d work or even if the parts are compatible, but it’d be hilarious if it did.

I simply loved the near deja vu (can't find the correct accents for 'e' and 'a' Lol)return to car repairing which both impressed me by your methodical approach, patience and relaxed, informative and beguiling scripting, editing and delivery. It was so good to be taken back virtually to the start of your vids, and to be assured of a continuous future, though I doubt at my age I will see the final denouement! Thanks Ed!
I know I have said to so may times over the years, but you are in a league of your own for videos like this, and for your wonderful and authoritative test reviews, both of which have as their foundation based on thorough research. intelligent opinions and a natural warmth that makes them the best of any in the ether! Thanks and again, and I look forward to my future enjoyment whenever one or both styles pop up onto my ancient, steam driven laptop!

You can get a standalone ECU ignition only for carburettors that’s not a problem

Not my vibe at all. Introduces the electrical complexity and messiness of fuel injection without 80% of the advantages. A full injection setup is well understood for K-Series engines with ITBs, so there’s no reason not to go for that over twin Webers, even if the Webers would be very cool!

Like the plan with the suspension: the world has all but forgotten about how clever this system was. Engine sounds good: can you do a feature on lean burn and why it was discarded for the BMW catalyst system? Is there a roll/crash cage that could be discretely fitted to make the body a little safer in the highly unlikely event that having a little too much fun goes wrong? Not a lot of structure between engine and driver in the original design...

Strange that on your Metro, Rover had fully painted the whole door, whilst on more modern cars such as our Rover 75 Classic has just the primer on places you only see if you know where to look. Even on a Bentley Continental doesn't have a base coat underneath the car, because covered over with plastic panels. Jaguar XF under the rear parcel shelf… etc. It saves weight apparently. More like cutting costs…

this is a reminder of how easy British mass market cars were to work on albeit a bit quirky in places, like the unattached door hinge reinforcing plates that most apprentices would have been fishing around for in the bottom of the door once it was removed from the car.

That's not normally where the door handles go. it's normally where they pivot.

Great video, like your approach, however when restoring a class is it’s always best to return to factory standard, more desirable. There are a lot of modify cars and they’re really down to personal tastes. Factory standard cars are more collectible and valuable if and when you come to sell them.

Nice Video Ed, Really enjoyed Seeing all the Parts you have sourced for the Resto, I was exactly the same regarding hunting for parts with the Honda Civic im restoring. I managed to Source some NOS Panels for the Outer Sills and Inner Arches, which i was very lucky to find as it has saved me having to either make them or use poorly made aftermarket ones that never fit right.

The door handle cracking looks to be so-called "Mazak (or Zamak, depending on where you're from) Rot", or "Zinc pest", and is caused by impurities in the metal. It can start cracking from any time between as early as 5 years and even up to 50 years or longer.

Morning Ed this really has the makings of quite some metro ,it's going to be a GTA+
One piece of advice if I might offer it,when you reach the point that it's going back together,if your running ITBs make dam certain that you use a decent air filter set up I can recommend ITG helps with the noise as well, whilst I think about it try and fit as much sound insulation as you can it makes the world of difference and stops you ears from bleeding on longer Road trips!...
Years ago I built and ran as my daily a VDP /MG Turbo ,brakes are not to much of a problem,if you update the flex hoses To braided SS,and fit green stuff front pads looking forward to see what comes next cheers Coggins.

I was wondering what was the latest with Melvin. You've got lots of ideas on how to improve it and at least you know how and where to source the relevant parts. I like that you're keeping it standard in terms of the looks but improving the ride and handling and putting in a bigger engine. Should be great when it's done, and a good example of "built not bought."
