    While recovering from COVID-19 herself, Nzinga Williams began to feel an urgent need to be of help to others, particularly in the wake of the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and so many others by police. Williams launched the grassroots New Black Mutual Aid to help "create a safety net and financial support for Black Theater Professionals through a time of revolution and pandemic."

    Since COVID-19 was named a global pandemic in March 2020, theatre professionals and organizations around the world have struggled to respond. Some theatres have closed permanently. Artists are adapting to new ways of telling stories. Many theatres are reckoning with longstanding systemic racism, onstage and off. During this period of upheaval and transformation, the Theatre 2020 Project is documenting how theatre professionals around the world have been impacted by the events of the past year to help future artists and scholars understand this unprecedented period of change.
