So here's a video that honestly I have wanted to make for years, talking about the infamously stupid Malibu Comics run of Street Fighter. It really just is that bad lol. Not much to say thats not covered in the video, but even as a kid I knew Malibu Comics were suspect at best and they've done other dumb stuff like having Goro with a giant laser rifle in their MK run as well. This is different than the usual kind of video I make and I am probably gonna pay for it in terms of the algorithm so any likes/shares on the video you can spare are greatly, greatly appreciated!
@@Khemith_Demon_Hoursit’s funny how people hate this but SF has gotten so kiddy and childish over the years in their depiction of the characters I appreciate this grittier take. They even had to bring Charlie, Gen, Adon, Birdie etc. back from the dead because apparently no one can die now in the new Disney-esque universe.
Guile’s bar freak out had me laughing my ass off ngl. In fact, the mischaracterisation of the whole cast had me laughing my ass off. How do you mess up so badly?! Also if the Ferret doesn’t make it into SF6 we riot.
I don’t know why, but the idea that Ken dying caused the rest of the Street Fighter cast to go berserk and start beating the crap out of people is hilarious to me.
It feels surreal to have Ken be so beloved by the cast. I think at the time only Ryu knew Ken. Not even Chun-Li who would eventually be friends with him later on, but I'm sure the rest of the cast didn't get chummy with him afterwards. Though I could be wrong but I can't imagine Zangief really knowing him even to this day.
I read these Street Fighter comics. They published this crap in Brazil. And it was so bad and we were left on a cliffhanger that some Brazilian cartoonists decided to create their own licensed Street Fighter comics and they turned out to be better than Malibu's.
I love all of the recent videos that you have been putting out about things that you want to talk about, and I am glad that the news feed has slowed down enough to give you a chance to create this stuff. Thanks for all your hard work, and I'm sending as many good vibes as I can muster your way as the KOF patch arrives!
This story arc almost got continued in Brazil. From what I remember at the time, the publisher here decided to continue the story themselves after the Malibu comics got canceled. They actually continued it for like one or two issues but then realised the American storyline was bonkers and decided to reboot it with their own continuity. I actually used tho have those comics, they pretty much kept closer with the original SF2 storyline, but with the typical edgy/sassy attitude from the 90's.
Damn,, considering how in modern media has been basically assassinating beloved franchise, this legit feels like the prequel to everything going on. Also makes me appreciate the actual Street Fighter Lore we got now, lmao
I remember in some forum online someone mentioned that Chun-li & Ryu get together in some old comic, who woulda guess it was this old Malibu comic where Ken straight up dies,Blanka murders people and Guile being an ass****. We come a long way lol.
eesh... poor chunners. The writer really must have not cared for her if they turned the strongest woman in the world to a, for a lack of a better term, bimbo. Also hooking her up with Ryu is like those writers that always hook up superman with wonder woman. "They're both strong, they need to be together". What a load.
Honestly, I never got the idea behind Ryu and Chun-Li hooking up in so many of the spin-offs. They barely interact in the games! She hangs out with Cammy, Guile, and Ken way more than she ever talks to Ryu, and Ryu mostly interacts with the other Shoto characters. They're friends-of-a-friend at best.
I wonder if Malibu comics was drunk AF when they made that SF comic 😂. For anyone who wants to read good SF comics outside by Udon, I reccomend SF Gaiden vol 1 & 2 by Itou Mami, SF II by Masaomi Kanzaki, SF Alpha / Sakura Ganbaru / and III: Ryu’s Final by Masahiko Nakahira.
There were actually more comic made after this when the license was transferred to someone *else* in Brazil, and boy oh boy does it get worse (by worse I mean stupider).
One more thing about this comic: in the final issue Malibu left a salty footnote about Capcom themselves putting an end to their relationship. In this footnote they doubled down on Capcom's anger (much like Guile doubled down on that bar) and talked about how they were going to show how Sagat lost his eye and it was going to be awesome and now you'll never get to see it so there. That little hissy fit was the absolute last SF-related message Malibu ever put in a comic. And even though it wasn't even remotely tantalizing to hear them tease it, these days I do have a morbid curiosity about what their version of that was going to be, because it's obvious their version of the canon was absolutely nowhere near correct (even taking into account how little of it existed at the time).
Oh, God, is this the Brazilian stuff? Malibu? I have a TON of Street Fighter comics, modern and old. I pretty much obsessively collect anything SF but especially jank stuff like these comics. They're pure gold and I absolutely love them so, so much.
No, Malibu was made in the US but as they were getting too far from the lore it was cancelled and only then a few brazilian authors have obtained the licence and released several SF comics
Omg I didn't know this comic at all. The Ken's scalp is so creepy ! 😂 It's clear that 99,99% of the fan arts nowadays have a better design. The characters are so ugly... 😅 Many thx 4 sharing this video @rooflemonger 😊 Was a lot of fun to watch ! 👍👍👍
Comment to beat the algorithm. I actually had at least one issue of this series back in the day- or maybe it was that other SF comics series that went nowhere. In any case until Udon came along the SF comics just didn't work for anyone.
Hahahaha omg that brought back some memories. I've bought these comics back in the day! It was dreadful. I didn't remember the drawing was so lame but the edgy stuff (including the violence and the suggested relationships between the characters) shouted for attention even at that time. This Ferret guy wasn't (isn't?) known at all here in Brazil and no one could understand his appearance. At the end of the 3rd issue there was a letter from the editors saying the title was canceled and it was going to be rebooted with brazilian authors and artists conducing new plots, that was a much better series although it was cancelled before the final issue was released. Unfortunately one of the main authors revealed himself to be an extreme right wing asshole years later but it was fun while it lasted. Thanks for the fun video!
Really surreal how this isn't the first time a form of early SF media has focused on Shadoloo using Ken to get to Ryu. I guess it was just a common plot point that made a lot of sense? (Or maybe the comic writers weren't very original, saw SF2's animated movie, and went "heyyyy....")
In case this isn't crazy enough for you, go to St1ka's channel where he goes over the comics made in Brazil to continue this series after it was cancelled.
Oh man, this disastrous Malibu garbage. I have the scans of this disaster on my computer to this day. I'm struggling to remember but I believe that final issue's mischaracterization was so bad it got Capcom to drop them. This junk and things like the licensed Zelda game scared companies away from licensing their properties for many years. And Roof is 100% right that the 90s "Edgy & Attitude" era was pervasive. It was goddamn EVERYWHERE. To give younger folks an idea of how bad the writing and art was in 90s comics: It nearly killed the goddamn comic book industry.
So according to the end blurb of that 3rd issue, Ken WAS gonna survive! At least, that’s what I recall from the last time I looked into it. Although Ken did get friggin scalped! It’s weird, because Malibu I heard faired better with Mortal Kombat, and I did look over a few of those MK comics. They’re alright, but way better than their Street Fighter affair.

Sup, Ken here. All I gotta say about this: They should've hired 90s Marvel make Street Fighter/Capcom comics, not Malibu's lower-budget comics from Brazil. Why? Because they would do as much justice as UDON if it were to happen, also Stan Lee and all his gang could create a long-running comic book franchise based on the Marvel vs. Capcom series, those games would actually have a plot.
