- I went to see Cat & Cloud, and hang with Chris Baca too. I’d wanted to go and visit for a long time, and we talk about that and living up to people’s expectations.
I recorded a podcast too, and the episode is out on the 26th November 2018 here:

Next time someone tells you Infinity War is the best cinematic crossover in history, just show them this video.
Made a pilgrimage here last Wednesday while visiting SF from Boston - was not disappointed. Lovely shop, great staff, warm, friendly vibes. And the coffee lived up to the reputation. Had a few delightful espressos - Truth > Answer. I love what BOTH you guys are doing, please keep it up.
I did the same pilgrimage back in September from London too. So much love for this space!
The only two coffee youtubers I'm subscribed to finally met up. I can die now.
Cheers, mate
That was so true Lol!!!
I for one have been waiting for this!! Cheers
Weird conclusion, but ok.
a whole lot of wisdom between the both of you. two people i admire in this industry of mine. this video makes me smile.
YES!!! Bless up, two of my favs in one video
I feel that when he says that you want to feel a little intimidated. I do like feeling like the person I'm doing business with, even in customer service, is better at it than I am. They are better at their job than I am.
Hey James, if you happen to make your way up to Portland, Oregon, you should come and check out a couple places we have here that are truly exceptional. Sterling Coffee Roasters, Good Coffee, and Prince Coffee. Portland is filled with just a plethora of amazing coffee shops with just the upmost care that goes into their craft, but these are worth checking out
I had no idea that there was a cat & cloud podcast. Santa Cruz is one of my favorite places in the world and i loved going to cat & cloud when I'd visit (as well as verve).
I've only started watching your videos so it is very odd to see you in front of the café there.
Such absolute legends!! I love both of you, and I enjoy hearing your perspectives on coffee, business and life. Your channels are obviously different stylistically but you both share a lot that is of value. Thanks
Oh men! You guys made my day again!! Thanks a lot for the Vibes! 🔥
You're on 🔥
I really enjoyed that, a really nice feel to it
Loved it! You guys continue inspire my ongoing specialty coffee journey ☕️👍🏼
Awesome! Two great guys in coffee. 👌👌👌
Great one James! Awesome to see both of you hanging out!
The beginning!!!!! Nice quality!!!!
I’m planning to visit S.C. and Cat & Cloud in little over a week. Couldn’t agree more about valuing the experience over the product.
That said, what did you order? Any food with it?
That opening tho!!!
AHH THAT 86 THO
I’m glad that he’s got a cool car and I’m not the only one that got it. Cars and coffee. Nothing better.
My love for that car knows no bounds. I could be served bad coffee at any Cat and Cloud café (if I ever visit), now I know I would still be okay with it
Why am I only knowing about this great collab now??
"I want to see what this place feels like inside" - that's what (s)he said.
Just purchased a cat & cloud Pullman 58 mm avocado 🥑 color and it’s perfect 👌🏽
I realize this is three years too late to ask, but as a Santa Cruz resident, I’m curious to know if you visited/sampled any of the other local cafes and roasters (i.e. Verve, Lulu Carpenters, SC Coffee Roasters, etc.)? As a local, I often find our coffee/cafe scene (and restaurants in general for that matter) rather lacking. Most service-based businesses here seem to be content in producing and providing a markedly mediocre-to-inferior product while charging as much money as possible because the ever-revolving door of tourists 1) don’t know any better in the first place, and 2) won’t stick around long enough to care, so I’m very interested to know what your experience here was like.
Bahaha, of course Chris drives an 86. Classic.
This is epic ! Two of the best
Screaming bean in Amsterdam.... the guy who owns it is great. He is very intimidating haha
But what is it that they do that is different? I liked the video, but still trying to understand that part. He said that he wants the cafe to be one that he'd want to go to and the kinds of baristas he hires, etc. But how is it actually different from the plethora of other Bay Area hipster coffeehouses? Honest question...
James, I'm slowly going discovering how awesome your vids are. Any books you recommend for someone whose interested in opening their own business?
coffeeshop that is
Best chai I've ever had
So come for the coffee - stay for the intimidation?
The light in Santa Cruz looks very different from the light in the UK.
Tristan Laing because you hardly have any light in the UK? Isn’t it all rain?
Hey, that's a great point you make at the end of your video. I also love experiencing the environment and culture around different coffee shops.
Nice intro, loved the drone shots. Great video overall, as usual. I also really liked Chris's idea of the slightly intimidating / cool kids club.
I see AE i hit like
Was that audi quattro coupe?
Okay, let's be serious. Was that red car an hachiroku? Because that... you know... iykyk
the linea mini in the background was the one that made me want a lmlm :S
shauns eightsix!
What's that song?
t-shirt says ふあっくゆー
Specialty coffee shouldn't just be for the affluent
Currently more likes and one less hater......... but it’s not a competition. 😅
I'd probably feel differently if I lived there but, honestly, after watching this video, I have no desire to visit.
His car is the best part of the video.. That acceleration is on point..
I like seeing Baca in a more casual, non-hosting role in this video. The fact that it’s Mr. Hoffmann interviewing is just the cherry on top 👌🏼 guess that makes me part of the intended audience.
Seeing James from the other side of the camera is interesting on a totally different level - It's almost as if, THIS is the real James. The James in his normal videos is certainly him, but it's not the everyday James. This is the guy you want to hang with.
Great to see my favourite coffee RUclipsrs together! Also, great drone footage!
Sorry, but his attitude towards his customers stinks. He's the type of coffee shop owner who gives the sector a bad name with the wider community.
Fantastic video in terms of intrigue and passion and I really took some good things out of it! (Like; why do I go to the cafe's I do and what do I like about them..). So that aside, if I can add a small criticism. I think the video is very beautifully shot and audio is great but I don’t really buy into the flat colour profile. It's either an unedited RAW file (which I don't think it is) or it's a regular file edited in a way that makes it look RAW (I highly doubt you'd do that intentionally!). So 'in my opinion' (the validity of that is debatable) I think some more vibrancy and contrast is missing from an otherwise great video. Visually I was a little too distracted and found after a while that I was listening to it and not watching it. That's just me, take it on board if you think it's valid and otherwise keep up the great work James!!
I could never stop watching James' videos... his hair is mesmerizing.
These guys all came out of Verve, right?
I grew up in Santa Cruz and used to see them all the time at the original Verve. They seemed like an authentically nice group of coffee dudes. Super happy that they're doing so well now!
To this day, all I think of when I hear Santa Cruz are antibodies. 15 years later (after finishing my MSc) and that’s still the first thing. I think it’s trauma
@@Bubreherro Downvote--that has nothing to do with anything.
Finally! The colab I had been waiting for! Both coffee professionals making really good and high quality video's for other people who work in coffee :)
I loved this! Only thing is I would have liked to have seen more of the inside of cat and cloud over some quick b roll clips. Though I know that's easier said than done in a cafe setting! Thanks for the vid James
6:00 - Gross. This kind of clubhouse, “cool kids only” vibe is so repulsive. Even the name is such a lame stereotype of this exact hipster culture where they have to repaint their childhood into one where they are cooler than they actually were. Whatever ‘cool’ means.
I live in northern California. I purchased some of their coffee at a local shop. It was overwhelmingly grassy . The next bag ,of another variety, was ALSO grassy. The retailer was gracious enough to offer me a refund, which I did not accept. But I don't see what the hype is all about. Who wants to drink grassy flavors in their coffee?
Hey James, are you going to any other cafes in Northern California?
Interesting to see you so emotional, James. It sounds like you had a great time!
Going on a road trip to SF next week and I will definitely be stopping at Cat and Cloud on the way! I was so happy to hear that I am not the only one who has "destination cafes."
I enjoyed this video. Casual and upbeat. Sorry to hear you lost the footage from inside the shop. Listening to the podcast too. 🙏🏼☕️🔥🤙🏼🌞😍
I subscribed both of you and suddenly I got two notifications popping out, one with you and the other with Chris on the cover. I knew then this is gonna be great. Lol
I loved your drone shots at the beginning! Do you reckon you'd ever upload dedicated drone videos? Going to be honest, I'm not really a coffee fanatic, but my partner is, and he's been binging your videos after the past couple of days. You seem like such a nice guy and I've been engaged by your content, even though I rarely drink coffee. You deserve way more than 20k subs. Keep up the good work and all the best.
The two videos showed up back to back. RUclips algorithm is on fire tonight!
I definitely know what question he asked James off camera... LOL... welll it’s California sooo
Also, I remember the vetting. Like, "you're in my house. I'll allow you in."
Hipstervilleburgh-city! Population: 2
My two favorite coffee people in my favorite cafe.
What happened to the podcast recording/link? 🧐
0:59 I really want to make a joke...
This channel is great. Keep it up!
So jealous you’ve been to Cat & Cloud 😭
Thanks for bleeping him
Great to see you guys chatting. Would have loved to see more of the coffee shop though. . But interesting to hear the feelings described
@@jameshoffmann we spoke at London Coffee Festival ... I opened my shop exactly 12 months ago so this video was really interesting as it has been very important to me how my coffee shop 'feels '. We are a coffee shop aimed at cyclists who make up 80 % of our custom . The reputation has spread amazingly quickly through the cycle community based upon our service , friendliness and of course great coffee . I'm a strong believer that like attracts like which makes our staff characteristics especially important in creating that 'feel ' which of course is actually extremely hard to just create !
As hip as coffee is now I'm really surprised at the absolute dearth of quality videography content available pertaining to it. Hell, there is even some absolutely awesome content on the hobby of flying STOL airplanes now (check out Trent Palmer's channel). Just about anything cool has ultra-high-quality content creator representation now, usually well-scaled in quantity to the relative popularity of the topic, but you two are the only two decent coffee youtubers I've been able to find. That's strange to me.
great video!
I agree with Chris as a business owner on who I want "behind my counter" but as a coworker... nope.
As a customer however it depends on the day... a confident yet approachable and dynamic barista is best... shit should have let him finish... his description of the experience is perfect...
Man, cheers to you guys too just looked up the pay in consideration of a career change. shit man less than half what I brought home out of college :/
Tip your barista!
Love the drone footage - which one do you have? Final scenes shot by Chris - couldn't take my eyes off that flickering light bulb inside the cafe 😂
Made the trip to Cat & Cloud on a business visit to the US this summer! Very happy to confirm that the coffee was excellent and the service super friendly even without any of the owners present ;)
While you're in the Bay Area, I think you really need to stop by Four Barrel in the Mission, on Valencia. A place I always visit when I come home.
I've been watching Chris for a long time, it's really cool that you went to visit cat and cloud.
This is awesome :) I am just now starting my channel and trying to document our coffeehouse and starting our second location!
Thanks for sharing, now I drink regular coffee :D
I am sure it is hard for you to have a genuine casual coffee experience at any specialty coffee shops as any seasoned barista would recognize you the moment you step in.
I'm sorry to keep commenting, but I hope to do the same pilgrimage to Stockfleths at some point in the future.
Glad I'm not the only one that chubbed up a little bit!! Cheers gents!!
Great video. What is the track playing? Love the song.
Is it just me or James sounded less British when he's in USA. lol
Man these guys are living my vision for buisness! Love it so much
Dude fallin off a surfboard at beginning lmao
"you can be part of the cool kids club"
That's awesome, great video!
Ahhhh so you want a New Yorker as a batista.
My two favorite coffee gurus😁
I Love both of you in one video
Lol Chris’ t-shirt!
He's got a drone!
when worlds collide
A dream come true
Why did I watch this? I am trying not to hit thumbs down because who does that, but other than the beach and the grape vine, this added nothing and took minutes. I am not a troll. Sincere.
Okay, I searched their site and see the podcast topics from the coffee biz p.o.v. Adell of Cafe Madelline Ditmas Park or Phil of Gasoline Alley may be more interested than I am. And I apologize because the description has links about a podcast and another link. Just I am not the intended audience.
I noticed I thumbed through a lot of this video.
Who downvoted this?
Dude, I like your content, but less face time and more B roll please. Talking heads are frikkin' boring. You guys talked and talked about the cafe, but didn't bother shooting the insides. Stop talking and start showing, or you might as well be on radio.
