  • New Holland 68 baler with Wisconsin engine. We had loose bales in the barn, so my brother fired up the engine and made 10 small bales.

Dad had one when I was growing up, loved the sound of that wisconsin, ours never ran as steady as this one. Seemed like the governor was always pullin, might have needed a tune up I dunno, it was many years ago. I do remember she blew a spark plug one time, maybe the last time we used it lol.

I baled with one of them for nearly 40 yrs, pulled by an 8n Ford tractor..

We had the exact same set up on our farm in Australia. That Wisconsin motor was a bitch if the weather was hot , which it usually was .

My dad was at an equipment show and walked by one of these balers and reached out and gave it a spin. It came a hairs breadth from starting. Needless to say he bought one and it was a working beast. Finally when he was getting tired in his older age he bought a PTO baler and aside from a lot of shear pins being replaced it did almost as well.

They work well when its not too hot out side. We ended up switched the baler to pto.

Grandpa bought a Hayliner 68 brand new. PTO drive though. Then my Dad bought it from him in the early 80's, and we used it until the farm auction in the late 90's.
it didn't need much power, but we farmed hills so we needed more to make sure we got the throw wagon up the hill too :) I see comments saying it needs 17HP, but you still got to pull it and the wagon!
Oh, my Uncle bought and mounted a NH thrower unit in the mid 70's for it and then built a couple wood throw racks for it. We bought those too and farmed with them right till the end. the one was getting pretty rough, but they were made of red oak so they lasted decades. They sold for a few bucks at the auction, not much more then the running gears were worth though, wood racks were antique by then. Heck square bales were antique by then.
We pulled ours with a 65HP David Brown 1200. Handled the surges from the plunger a lot better then our MM U302(gas). That baler is overbuilt anyway, you can STUFF it full of hay and nice bales will just pump out of the back. Just make sure the knife on the plunger is still sharp.

I always like using our, that baler doesn't like damp/ green hay even if you turn the cranks back out. That bale still puts out a nice bale though

The 2 cylinders do suck when they get hot, then you have to let them cool down

Did this require a specific flywheel to operate with an engine, or will a standard flywheel work?

Standard flywheel works, Just 3 belts. The baler has motor mounts. Its 3 bolts to put a pto shaft on

According to the manual only requires 17HP. I have seen these balers run with 17HP Wisconsin 2cycle engine mounted on them.

This baler doesn't need much hp, you have to go a little slower and make sure the hay isn't damp at all.

You need to tighten that will not on the right hand side of that Ford tractor rear wheel or you'll be ruining the splines in that hub if you keep running it loose

Ha! We had this baler in the PTO model. It was a good baler but the pickup teeth where spaced to far apart. We also had this same Wisconsin Engine on a six inch 40 foot auger. This engine was a piece of crap! I replaced it with a Tecumseh 14 horse power cast iron overhead valve engine which actually had a lot more power than the piece of crap Wisconsin engine.
