    An experiment testing water purification tablets on dirty water, and examining the water through a microscope and a petri dish. The tablets are only effective against microbes and not heavy metals and chemicals.
    The medium used for the petri dish was tryptic soy agar. The dish was incubated for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.

    Microscope - Leica ATC 2000

    I am fairly sure you're meant to strain the water through a cloth filter before treating it, I do bushcraft, and one solution is to run it through a shemagh or bandana, the microbes can hide inside the larger dirt clumps which defeats the point of the iodine tablets. Multiple filtration steps can also be done, such as filtering through stones, moss, sand, then a cloth barrier - this will keep a lot of protozoa and debris from getting through the filter, and make the water easier to clean with iodine tablets.

    The key is to get running water, either stream or lake to stream, rivers are kinda iffy because you don't know if they have nuclear waste in them. FYI! Also it's best to carry a filter straw with you or water filter system, which doesn't contaminate the water that you are drinking. Also you can write down on a piece of paper and laminate it of bleach drops to liters of water or gallons for that fact. Keep it with you just in case you are out in the woods drink something horrible and start to get a little sick to your stomach at least you can take the paper out and look at it to remember what the right amount of drops to water you need in an emergency.

    Could you maybe do a vid where you rub your hands really fast together, to produce that characteristic burnt smell, and then collect a sample of the first layers of the stratum corneum from your hand, to see if any skin cells were actually burned off?
    This is my hypothesis on what happens when we rub our hands as such;
    the friction generated heat does indeed burn skin cells, but only the superficial, first layer of cells in the stratum corneum.
    So the superficial layer gets burned off, but because that first cell layer is so thin, the heat is quickly diffused into the rest of the layers and the air, so it only feels warm, not really hot.
    Iwasnt able to find any info on this myself, so Id appreciate your imput in form of eaither vid or comment.

  • @agentp6621

    Try using a water purification treatment with a flocculant included. It reduces the turbidity and then chemically treats the water for a much cleaner water. Chlor-floc is one brand. P&G purifier of water is another one.
    If I might suggest. Try finding a flocculant like aluminum sulfate (styptic pens or rock salt deodorant tend to be good sources). See how flocculation alone improves the quality of the water. If you remove the solid particles in water. You remove their food. They want to stay near their food. That’s the idea.

    I’ve used a lot of disinfectant and cleaning methods over the years and probably like iodine the least. It’s hard to beat pump style ceramic or engineered fiber filters they’re usually capable of at or below 0.2 micron and pared with say chlorine bleach or iodine can filter and kill everything. I e even tried UV bags which basically just leave filtered water out to be irradiated by the sun in a special bag and nothing is as fast or trustworthy as the pump filters, other than maybe a battery powered filter. In a real pinch I’ve filtered water through quite a few layers of cotton (a shirt folded over many times) and that was able to get the big stuff out and it was iodine after that. Iodine tabs were good as they are solid but I’ve also used bleach, I’m quite small concentrations with good results, maybe a cap full to a gallon if I recall, with a little more in rinse water after washing dishes. I grew up in the back woods and have been outdoorsy my whole life without ever getting sick from food or water (knock on wood), though I have known people that have gotten sick.

    • @samuelw4492
      @samuelw4492 2 года назад +5

      Boiling will only remove a small number of high vapor point chemicals like alcohols and other chemicals more volatile than water. Chemicals that are less volatile won’t boil off your water will boil out before they do it also won’t remove heavy metals like lead, chromium, and cobalt. If you had no other choice and you really had to drink absolutely contaminated and filthy water your best bet would be to distill it in two parts. The first part of your distillation would be heating the water to around 200° Since water boils at 212°F anything that boils off at that 200° number would be a volatile chemical then you could dispose of that then boiling the actual water itself at 212 would give you the purest water you could have two problems with that method though one distilled water doesn’t have any minerals or electrolytes in drinking it will slowly leach the minerals, electrolytes, and vitamins out of your body so you’ll need to reconstitute it with salt potassium and other minerals you can get packets of them to turn your distilled water into mineral water

    • @samuelw4492
      @samuelw4492 2 года назад +5

      The second problem is the possibility of azeotropes. Azeotropes are a phenomenon that occurs when you have two liquids that one mix together boil at a lower temperature than each of the individual liquids themselves like ethanol no alcohol we drink ethanol boils at 78.4c but a mixture of 95% ethanol and 5% water boils at 78.2c that means that you can never totally get all of the water out of the ethanol the ethanol that you’re going to drink will always have 5% water remaining. Of of course you would be distilling water not ethanol but the point stands your water can form azeotropes with other chemicals if you were dealing with unknown chemicals and unknown azeotropes you could theoretically distill your water and still end up having a Huge amounts of various chemicals in the water itself it’s really impossible to know unless you specifically know what chemicals are present in the water and whether or not you can actually remove them. a lot of heavy metals can be filtered out but you would have to know what they are and what the smallest micron presenting the water

    Yeah, I think just very crude filtration with gravity and then through some cloth could change results drastically.

    Sorry, but isn't the requirement for pre-treatment filtration common knowledge. Maybe not, but I've always seen this requirement very clearly highlighted on the tablet packaging.
    I've either used a Millbank bag, or made an improvised filter using any fabrics to hand like socks, shirts, cloths etc etc.

    Can you look at the powder that was featured in Mark Rober's videos? I don't remember the same of the powder but it'd be cool to see it.
