John Anderson has one of my favorite versions, too. Kind of strange for an artist to cut something like that in the '80s in the wake of the Urban Cowboy movement, but I guess it shows the power of the song! At any rate, thanks for this - wasn't aware of a few versions (or the bands/acts that performed them).

I saw Lee Ann Womack perform this song live in London a few years back. The audience actually stood to applaud notes she hit in the middle of the song

Christine! You are so cool! 😎
LBV is one of my all time FAVES since New Riders of the Purple Sage released their arrangement back in the 1970’s..
    🖤🌹🖤
I actually had the extreme honor to jump on stage and jam with their steel player Buddy Cage R.I.P. in his own band several years ago. He’s my fave steel player..❤️
I am working on a cover version now.
    Good luck to you!

Bobby Bere has an awesome version of Long Black Veil. And you need to look into the response, known as “My Long Black Veil” who was the co-writer of Long Black Veil Marijohn Wilkin. Check them out, they’re my favorites.

The best performance IMHO is Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. They've never released it, as far as I know, but you can find it on youtube.

I enjoy how you compare versions of classic songs. You should check out “Could You Love Me One More Time”. Originally a Stanley Brothers song, but redone brilliantly by Sturgill Simpson. Also, “Darby’s Castle”, written by Kristofferson. The bluegrass version from Jason Davis does it more justice.

What I find most interesting is less that the narrator is dead, but more that the ghostly figure with the long black veil is actually alive

My favorite is the duet from Emmylou Harris & Dave Matthews! Her singing on the chorus is so good, coming in above his as if they’re separated like they are in the song (one dead, one still alive). ruclips.net/video/gCLqphW77aA/видео.html

I love this song; I love storytelling songs. Problem is, if she was so great she wouldn't have let the guy take the rap for her.
You might want to try "The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd" next. If you have not heard it before you will love the lyrics.

I was in Church, as I am every week. When a woman I've known for quite some time. However not very well. Prayed for me, and I saw a long black veil lifting off me, in a vision. So It's all about secret sin. Okay, makes sense now...

I don't consider The Band's version fun. I think Rick strikes the right tone. The background music might be a little more rock.
