As Jesus said, "Love thy neighbors as you love thyselves." Self-love is your primary basis before you love others. It's impossible to understand how to love others without understanding how to love yourself.

Jesus said "Love thy neighbor *as* thyself." It sounds like a minor semantic difference between this and "Love thy neighbors as you love thyselves." It's not. It's an immeasurably monumental difference. The first accounts for your neighbor being you; you and your neighbor being one. The latter maintains separation between what you are and what your neighbor is. The trick is having a genuine sense and perception of yourself being one with your neighbor and God (the first Great Commandment that goes with this one: Love God with all of what you are.)
Jesus emphasized the oneness of himself and God and *you*. He never said he's the son of God and you are not. The church(es) say that. Jesus doesn't.
