Hey Steve tanks for the video. The FT 818 is my favorite grab and go radio. Glad you made it to your destination. Enjoyed the chat on the Repeater near Weldon Friday evening. 73 Dave KX4YH

Nice job on your test video. Love my 6100! Agree that Yaesu has fallen behind on QRP. Thanks, Michael

I got my 817ND as they were phased out with £45 off. I like it but wish it had a white background with black lettering display as the colours are difficult to see. A lot of things on it I don't use. I got it for portable as my h/b one is too big, very basic ssb and cw.
I can't see me buying anything else.

From a historical perspective, China is doing to Japanese products today as Japan did to American products in the 60's. They are more innovative and get the products out to the masses more quickly, and cheaper. Where has Kenwood gone in this market? Who? Mind you, the Chinese products aren't released trouble-free as many Xiegu users know (including myself), but the problems are addressed fairly quickly in updates. Hoping to see innovation in this arena from Yaesu and from Kenwood. In the meantime, I'm a G90 believer.

Tha k you very much tmfor this comparative video.
In my opinion, both are great radios.
    I own both.
I do like both, 817 818 it's trusty, reliable, ok it's old, but reliable, it will never crash, the x6100 can crash the software in the middle of nowhere.

There’s a misunderstanding. X6100 DOES NOT Have built in TUNER as well as the FT817ND. there’s the external tuner for both. 73 de IU4RXZ

The main difference between the two radios is Yaesu is a 3 stage mixer where the X6100 is an SDR. I still have my 817 for fun but I prefer my KX2 it’s just that much better.

In the old days triple conversion was a great advance in technology and marketing but with sdr less is more superior, how times have changed.... You know like in aviation dc3 to b737 in a short time.

The x6100 is far more superior in every aspect from the ft818, and more than a decade apart. What I love with xeigu is that it listens to what field operators are in need, from receive current draw to price and technology advance. My g90 on hf is far superior to my ft897.

I have the exact two radios. The Xiegu X6100 is one of the most disappointing radios I have acquired so far. I don’t know where to start…battery life is horrendous, birdies everywhere, the radio gets interference from everything around it. The hardware is ok. But it needs lots of improvement. Honestly, the Malahit DSP SDR v3 is better receiver and it costs half the price (if you are looking for a receiver only radio). The FT-818ND dances around it.

Yessss. Same here, I own both, and my 817 (non ND) it's waaaaay better

X6100 does not have VHF and UHF. Which I believe is the most important difference that favours FT818. Even these are separated by two decades in time and technology, there seem to be minimal differences in sensitivity and abysmal audio performance for X6100. The fact that we get older and our fingers do not keep up with those little buttons ... not relevant performance-wise. FT818 remains a fantastic little piece of equipment. I doubt X6100 will gather in time the same amount of QSOs that QRP lovers worldwide did with FT818 in the past twenty years. 73 de YO3ITI

Best comment on the video 👏👏👏. We're getting old. That's an operator issue, not a radio problem. 😊
