Him and Keith Hernandez were all world defensive 1st base. he was so agile and his fundamentals were perfect. Mattingly should be in the HOF. Yeah injuries cut his career short but for those 6-7 years he dominated the sport at his position. i’d rather that then the long somewhat above average career of a Harold Baines
I guess the only thing I would add to that is to do your best to stay on the second base side of the bag, I’ve seen a lot of injuries occur when you do otherwise
Oh no question, it would have to be easier.I've gotta say, nowadays the footwork involved is so overlooked; like Donnie said, Managers stick anybody with a pulse over there.
The best first baseman in the galaxy (23)
LOL... Very well said.
Hell yeah!
As long as Keith Hernandez isn’t listening
But no one pulled his foot off the bag early and got more outs than Eric Karros.
@@joemeehan9329 LMAOOOOOO 😂 Don’t you ever mention Eric Karros and Mattingly in the same sentence!!!
squaring up at the bag really helped and he stretching to early helps allot too...
This helped a lot it's my first year at first base and I need to take in all I can get. That's for sure.
Reps, reps and after that more reps.Plus you want to get used to your infielders throws.Keep on & don't quit.

That's the problem with baseball today. No fundamentals. It's because guys today are athletes playing baseball, and not baseball players.
i am a right handed pitcher and first basemen
I'm left handed and play first it is easier
