College ultimate player here! I see a lotttttt of comments pertaining to disc wobble and I think I might be able to help out a bit. I see so many people saying "more spin," but in reality, it has more to do with plane alignment than simply adding more spin once you have the basic technique down. Perhaps a metaphor will help Imagine this: You have a large knife and you want to cut a stick of butter straight down the middle. The most important thing to do so is to keep the knife at the same exact angle as how you push the knife through the butter... If the knife is tilted left or right, and you push straight down to cut, it will not be a clean cut. The same is true with frisbee, if you follow. make sure the disc is cutting the air upon release at the same angle that you release it. This can be corrected by examining and correcting the angle at which you should hold the disc before releasing with a big wrist snap. Hope this helps ;)
+Lukas D You shouldn't have to use IO to keep it flat unless their is wind. It is not ideal to use a bend approach when you actually want to throw straight to the target. Even though both will end roughly in the same spot how fast it is getting there is different. If a player has a problem with the disc turning left on them they need to learn to throw it completely flat instead of just compensating for the turn.
blum3141592 what so i be doing different when i throw it well but then the first joint of my middle finger gets bruised for throwing the forearm throws ?
I've been working on this throw for a while now. This video has been a huge help. My forehand is getting nearly as much distance as my backhand now! And I'm able to pinpoint location! Brodie, you rock dude.
@REGROSS527 Very good question. The reason I like keeping the disc vertical is for a couple different reasons. 1) It allows me to us fakes a lot faster and easier 2) I will be able to generate more spin on the disc by using towel whip method 3) If your able to throw a hammer it allows you to go straight into a hammer throw. Hope that helped!!!
That vertical tip starting out was something I was suprised/impressed to see. When I just started learning flicks I had trouble straightening the disc, but if you start with the disc down it got a lot easier. Good work here.
One of the things I really like about both this and the backhand video, are when you encourage players to practice throws with just a limited wrist snap. Learning that solid wrist snap will make the transition to high releases, low releases, or other throwing variations much easier. I also like when Alex gets that cute little dimple when he throws in slow motion. Can you do a video on how to do that?
One crucial thing I discovered from this video as opposed to others is that I wasn’t “hugging” my index finger against the rim/wall of the disc. I was pressing it flat against the “floor” of the disc. Once I saw in this video that he hugged the side, all my throws got way better. Frickin hallelujah moment. Thank you!! 0:44
I have no relations with Ultimate Frisbee. I never play it. I really appreciate the detail he really puts in these videos. It makes it really interesting. Good job!
I am really impressed by all of the Bro Tips so far. I've played ultimate for over 5 years and I just started coaching (a group of enthusiastic middle schoolers!). I'm really interested in seeing how this project progresses. How about footage of the most common mistakes that new recruits make while learning to throw and examples of what you do to help correct them? A side-by-side slow-mo comparison of a good vs. a bad throw would be really useful I think!
My goal is to join my school's frisbee club, but I want to get down the basic throws like the forehand and the hammer. It took me nearly 4 hours of practice, but I finally got it down! Flight path is nearly straight almost every time and I tried my max distance with it and it was about 25-30 yards straight! My forearm is sore, but it is totally worth it! Thanks Brodie for helping me sort out my forehand throw!
I used to grip with my two fingers split like you're describing but after watching this video I have more control and can get more distance with my throws. I'm still making adjustments but I recommend this grip!
Ok, I've been to other videos about flick throws, but by far this is THE most descriptive and most helpful video to the point that i can actually finally throw with a flick. Thank you Brody for posting. Now for a game of ULTIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!!!
I'm an old guy but a new disc golfer and I've been struggling with the forehand, but I just tried a few throws after watching your vid and I did better than I ever did. Thanks a lot.
This video helped me a lot, I've been struggling throwing a solid straight forehand for a couple years now. But after this video and some practice I am able to not only throw further, but much more accurate. So thank you very much.
Hey Brodie thanks for the tips. I started just playing frisbee in my yard with my friend about a year and a half ago. Over the year and a half. I have learned how to throw a hammer, forehand, skip, backhand, and a few others. All from your videos. Thanks a lot!
How high should you hold the disc the throw the best forehand? Waist? Belly-button? I know that it differs according to the situation in Ultimate, but I'm just talking just playing catch.
Thanks Brodie after watching this video for the second time I realized my mistake and fixed my forehand! Now I can finally go back to throwing some big forehands for my trickshot video that I hope you will see when I'm done! Thanks again!
I have been watching your videos all day and I just went downstairs and watched RudeTube for 5minutes and they showed your speedboat video...I think I'm psychic.
hey Brodie, i just want to thank you for making this forehand video, cause i can throw a regular throw crazy far but i could never get the fore hand down it would always hit the ground until now so, thanks for the tips they've been really helpful.
Thanks for this video, couldn't throw a forehand for the life of me. Changed my grip so my third and fourth fingers weren't tucked in - made a big difference.
@ex0tan oh I think your talking about grip strength. When hucking a forehand I grip it and rip it. The more pressure you can create between the inner and outer rim of the disc the more rotation u can generate. For shorter throws its ok to not have such a tight grip to help improve your accuracy.
My ultimate coach, Jonathan Nethercutt, was awarded best flick or forehand in America. He played for the teams dark side and ring of fire. He coached at Phillips Middle school. You should check out some of his videos or meet him if you have not done either of these yet. When he does his throw off or pull he spins around then throws.
I think another good point to add is that with the finger that is actually contacting the disc you really want to fully line the inside of the disc with it. Don't use the side of your finger because this keeps you from really being able to utilize inside out throws. This also helps with overall touch on the disc.
Brodie smith,i love your frisbee skills, how I wish u one day can come to my house and teach me and u can give me one of your dark horse frisbee for free,I stay in singapore
First, this video is great, but this might help. What helped me when i started instead of both my middle and index on the inside rim to throw, id put them both by the rim and move my index a little bit up so that it's only my middle finger on the rim but both fingers still remain under the frisbee. That little transition helped me to actually throw it, his grip goes further, guess two fingers put more power into the throw but i now throw with his grip and aim it accurately. Hope this helps
@biblicalsoultaker Extending those last 2 fingers helps you stabilize the disc in your hand better. Gives you better control on throwing the disc not just straight, but also when you start to curve the disc. We can make another video showing why its important later if you like.
Yes it does, depending on circumstances. Are you in an open place then the wind will be fairly constant and an experienced thrower will be able co calculate how to throw. Are you surrounded by trees/bushes/buildings then the wind will be instable (rise or fall in unexpected places) and throwing consistantly will be difficult, especially over long distances.
it's all about technique, keep practicing. also momentum helps to increase throwing yards so try and catch an up the line pass and try and throw as far as you can
As someone who's broken nearly 4 Wham-O frisbee's in 3 months and yet to break my first DiscCraft frisbee in 2 months, i suggest opting for DiscCraft once yours breaks. Mine's been slammed, scrapped, slapped, fallen on top of vertically bending it into a crescent and still workable to flat conditions and flies normally. Also i just prefer the feel, but this is merely my opinion and i haven't nearly been playing anywhere near to as close as brodie. Especially since i learned from these vids.
@tedhellcaster Well i think something that will help you is not over cutting. A lot of people think to play great offense you need to be running the entire time making hard cuts when in fact its more important to make less cuts, but the right ones. Does that answer your question?
Wow, nice vid man! My forehand is my favorite throw and I noticed during your video that I never make sure to keep the bottom of my arm facing up. Definitely gonna give this a try tonight when we enter the intramural playoffs!
I've always thought of Frisbee as a fun park activity. It wasn't until someone showed me their skills and got me to look into Ultimate Frisbee did I realize that, like practically everything that exists, it's a full-on sport.
To catch better, when you're throwing around for fun, go ahead and whip your hand at the disc as hard as you can when you catch it. At first it will drop off your hand like it hit a brick, but you'll eventually be able to catch it. You can even do this by yourself if you have some wind to throw into. Your hands will get a lot better on hard catches quickly. The other thing is to use the palm of your hand in stead of the base of your fingers. Gives you more catching surface area.
Next year I might play ultimate so im learning ahead of time my big brother plays highschool ultimate this is his last year and hes gonna take me to some of his practices with the other highschoolers so imma practice a lot to impress the coach. Ps is spelling is of my keyboard isnt working properly
Hey Broadie! Last week I learnt about Ultimate, and got hooked after watching your videos. I'd like to practice and get great at it, so what advice can you give a rookie? How'd you start out?! My forehand fizzles out and people never pass to me (something about the wrong positions im in)
I had the same problem. Instead of using the "Gun" grip, I split my index and middle finger to a "peace sign". Middle finger on the inside rim like brodie said, thumb on top, but index more towards the center of the underside of the disc. Its almost like a balance and its holding the disc up and its not hurting anymore. I have relatively small hands and I think that is why it was hurting before.
A lot of people focus on arm vs. wrist, but I'm more interested in fingers vs. wrist. Pulling the disc just a bit with my finger drastically increases the spin, much more than what I can achieve by wrist snapping, but this breaks down when it's raining and the disc is wet. Are you supposed to (do you?) use your fingers that much?
Brodie, I think that you would gain many more subscribers by teaching the same techniques for left-handed people like myself. Not everyone throws with their right hand.
Hey brodie, i keep trying the forehand, i follow what you say and i throw it but the disc always curves off to the left, goes verticle and then collapses. I would really appreciate any tips or indicators for what's going on if you know. I am wanting to start ultimate frisbee at my university. Your videos have really inspired me to try it. So thanks heaps for inspiring me and producing awesome videos. Looking forward to more great videos in the future man. Thanks.
@TheCardsfan24 Have you watched my How to throw a forehand huck? If not take a peek at that and see if that clears it up. If you still have problems I can try and help ya. Thanks for the question!

Thanks for this Brodie. I wish I found this during my high school frisbee days. Now I will practice it the right way for college frisbee!

Yes it does, depending on circumstances. Are you in an open place then the wind will be fairly constant and an experienced thrower will be able co calculate how to throw. To catch better, when you're throwing around for fun, go ahead and whip your hand at the disc as hard as you can when you catch it.
