    I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I've been working at a base building plan the last 3 months. I use a heart rate monitor and my minutes run per week has gradually increased.Started at 90 minutes/week, now up to 225 this week. First time using heart rate to train. I feel amazing. Lost weight. Feeling stronger and stronger. I LOVE my runs. I've never been able to say that. Always dreaded it. Never stuck with a plan. Always would get injured. Not on this plan. I ran 60 minutes without stopping! Never believed I could have done that! I'm hooked. Also, I love your channel name. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      Yes there is. I got frustrated not seeing consistent results in the past without using my heart rate. This is slow progress, but as you saw. I am happy with it.

    Thanks for sharing your Maf experience. Your progress and success is amazing! Great job! Agree with your observations about running and strength training. Monday is an off day for me (after Sunday's long run) and that's when I do strength training. If I have to do them both on the same day, I prioritize running and do that first. There are many things that impact our HR when running, including weather conditions, terrain, and stress. So I keep a running log to note these factors and I can review and make sense of my HR.

      @@runningformybestlife While not formally following the MAF method, most of what I do aligns very closely with MAF. I have been successfully using this methodology for many, many years, and it's kept me healthy and passionate about running.

    I’ve always been fascinated by hr training methods. I’ve never had the patience to actually go through with this in the past (ie running at a hr rather than a pace) because I felt like I was plodding along. But now that I’m slower and older, maybe it’s time to try again. Lately I feel like I only have two speeds-stop and go. This might help me out with pacing too!

      Same here!! It was something that I would just shoo off. It seemed like too much work and patience. But I figured since Covid is going on and there aren't any races to train for, i might as well give it a shot. With this, you just have to not think about pace (I know its hard to do) and eventually you'll see your numbers slowly improve.
      I got a giggle out of your two speeds. haha

    Great video, as always. I don't have a heart rate monitor, but I have been trying to go extra easy lately. I'm slow anyway (your slow is my fast), so it can feel kind of uncomfortable to run too slow.

      Nice. I am glad you liked it and am thrilled that it gave you some value. I currently don't run by mileage, I run by time But I would say I probably get in 30-40 in a week. I am going to start amping it up now that the restrictions are being lifted and races are opening up again.

      @@runningformybestlife Thanks - just starting the MAF method, am in a big ultra in May 2022, so going to give the method a go for 3 months to see what it does as long slow steady in what the Ultra is all about. Thanks again for the reply.

      That’s awesome! I think you’re really gonna like it. Yes, it’s highly frustrating for a while, but once you get used to it, your runs will feel very blissful. Just forget about pace and you’ll be fine. You’re gonna kill it at that Ultra.👍💪

    I purchased the eBook of Dr. Phil Maffetone's book, and I was very (pleasantly) surprised it was very scientific. Low HR training is great and I have noticed my high-end speed ability has improved. My weight also hasn't changed much, but the body certainly knows has to improve internally. Way to improve!

      I am pleasantly surprised also with the book. I was afraid it was going to be too scientific, hard for me to understand. But no, he shares his theory in a very down to Earth way.

      @@runningformybestlife Intentionally for the better of the last 7 months. It's best to trust in the process because changes in weather conditions can mask progress. For example, my last marathon of 3:56 (in 44F) in March was improved by my last month's marathon of 3:53 (in 77F & 95% humidity). I'm sure once races return, running in cool weather will show signs of massive improvement.

    I did MAF base building for 9 weeks and in that time I’ve lost aerobic capacity. The problem, I’m 60 and those numbers don’t work for me. Bottom line I was training at 121 bpm and that based on my max heart rate would be a recovery rate versus aerobic so I detrained. I went from 5:22 pace for half marathon to not being able to hold that pace for a 5K in just 8 weeks. At this rate I would be walking my next marathon so ditching for now. May revisit in my eighties.

    Really interesting! My first time hearing about this method but I did read a book a few weeks ago called Younger Next Year which talks about doing aerobic activity based on your heart rate and apparently it's the best way to get Q10 in the body which helps the body heal itself. Really awesome to see the results you're getting on this. How does the Maffetone method work? Do you have any videos that explain this in more detail? Happy that you're enjoying your workouts more too! Great video!

      Hmmm that’s a great book reference. Gonna have to pick that up.
      I don’t think I have any personally, but there a bunch on RUclips that explain it. Basically you use the 180 formula. (180 minus your age, plus a minus few depending on your fitness level) When you run or do an aerobic exercise you stay within that HR zone at all times. It’s super hard to get used to, but gets easier as you go.

    Never heard of the maffetone method before, thanks for teaching me something new 👍 I don’t run often, but when I do I just “go” without any thought on my pacing. I think it’s because I’m too eager to get my run done and over with lol . I also hate it when I record , and the lawn mower or trash truck all of a sudden decides to show up outside 😂

      Hi! Thanks for coming by. At first I just used my watch, but realized it wasn’t ver my accurate. So I switched to using the Schoche heart rate monitor. Definitely have me a more accurate reading.

      I have been using this method on the trail lately, which adds another challenge to this method.

    Hi, can you tell me how how oftenm per week you need to jog in zone 2 and for how long or what distance for the Maf method to work? I read on a Maf Facebook group it needs to be minimum 7 hours per week for the changes to take effect

      Hi Denis!
      Hmm… that’s a great question. To be honest I don’t have that answer. But what I did was 4-5 runs a week. 4 short ones (45-60 minutes) and 1 long run (60 minutes +) each week. I did that for 6 months straight and then sprinkled in some speed work.
      I don’t use MAF anymore, but it was wonderful for building my aerobic base.

      Well, a few reasons actually.
      (In no particular order)
      I became tired of being chained to numbers and worrying so much of my HR was too high or too low. Of course I still use my HR data from time to time, but I don’t put too much stress on it.
      I joined the Los Angeles Road Runners a few months back and the head Coach David Levine stresses listening to your body and to run by feel. I really enjoy this.
      Lastly, I want to do a sub 4 hour marathon next month and I felt if I stick with it, I would t see that time for a looong time.
      I truly believe it’s a great method if someone has the time and patience to stick it out.

      @@runningformybestlife Yes the downside I have found with MAF means you have to run, sorry, I mean slowww jog! on your own so it is a very anti-social form of training if you are used to running with friends or a running club. It has taught me how to train on my own which I couldn't do before, and is good if you are coming back from injury as it will keep you from jogging too fast, but it requires not only patience but a lot of consistent hours so you need a lot of spare time. I wish you the best of luck with your sub 4 hour marathon attempt, I am sure you will make it. My one tip for training, nothing will improve you as much as a weekly Tempo run all year round.

    These are the success stories I am looking for, for LHR training. Does faster pace at lower heart rate let you race faster at the faster HRs too?

      Hi!! I am happy this helps. From my understanding, yes it does. I haven't done MAF in a bit, but I recall placing 3rd in my age group at a 10k when using it. I didn't have the patience to stick with it though. Wished I would have.

    What does someone do after 4 months of MAF training , I want to race a 5K event , how do I know how fast to run the event ?

      Good question. Have you started incorporating speed work yet? I’m not expert and learning as I go, but I would say go as fast as you can. That will be a good time trial to see if your speed has increased since starting or to use as a reference in the future.

    What would you recommend on hills. I find that I can keep my pace and hr going good but when I reach a big hill it's like I almost instantly have to stop and walk or else my HR skyrockets.....so whenever i come to an incline like this I just stop and walk and once it flattens back out I continue with the jog
    Would you say this is a good way to go?

      That's exactly what needs to be done unfortunately. Even the most high achieving athletes who take on this method have to do that. I know how frustrating that is, but just keep at it. I have learned that pace is meaningless. Just enjoy the process and listen to your body. Over time, perhaps after 3-6 months, start sprinkling in some speed work.       At the time of this video I believe I was using my Apple Watch which is not good for that, but since then i use Schoche. It connects seamlessly with my Apple Watch.
