There was one continuity error I noticed and no one seem to be talking about it. After Rev Timi's wife and daughter were killed, it was said in the narration that he stayed out there for nine days. When he left that spot, his shirt was incredibly still clean for one who had slept out there for 9 days under the sun and in the rain. I thought tgat was too much to ignore but otherwise it was a great movie.

I saw it. Notice how I kept saying “no nitpicking…”. That’s cuz I had already decided (for personal reasons) to just ignore some things. There was also the historical inaccuracy of that whole royal visit…just negodu. This movie was more flawed than this review can cover.

Yeah, I didn't remember her from Blood Sister cuz it was the first time ever seeing her and I have to see a face more than once to remember it, unless it's very unique. I'm amazing with names; not so much faces. I had not watched far from home. I finally did around Christmas. I have not watched A tribe called Judah. Hi Pearl, I really enjoyed watching this a lot and I just want to say that you have such a deep mind. The way you pay attention to the little details everyone else would typically gloss over is impeccable.
So I thought the movie was so beautiful to watch. Cinematography was excellent and the art direction was really good. I liked how they incorporated some of the old vintage stuff. Like the cars, bleach, projectors etc. My favorite scene in the movie was probably the saddest overall. The scene where Eku Edewor and her daughter got burnt in the car with Timi watching. That was spectacular cinematography.
Acting was also very good. I am surprised you don't remember Genoveva Umeh from Blood Sisters and Far from Home. Her acting is always on point. Demola Adedoyin's perfomance was very intense too. Every other person in my opinion, delivered quite convincing performances but those two really stood out for me.
I also agree with your points about the character Anna showing a lot of red flags especially with boundaries. She could have really done better.
Plus the sequence of Timi's death in church/transplanting his lungs without a test to show that it was a match (Yes we know he has great lungs but even though)/Elijah waking up to say "my daddy" felt kinda off to me. It could have been handled better.
When I was watching the movie, I was thinking to myself about how Sambasa Nzeribe's has been stereotyped as the violent/troublemaker guy causing chaos everywhere and then I heard you also mention it in the review, that was a yassssss moment for me. Nollywood casting producers really need to give the man diverse roles. He has so much depth to him.
Overall, i would say it was a great movie. The year ended pretty strong for the general outlook of Nollywood movies.
Looking forward to more of your reviews and great job, once again. 👍👏

This is such an insightful and incisive comment; thank you. I chuckled at your excitement when one of your observations was validated. I get that feeling 100%.
Your comment finally lit a fire under me to watch far From Home. I'd never watched it. I did watch Blood Sisters but perhaps her character was too minor for me to remember. I typically need to see an actor more than once to continue to remember them - unless they were a lead.
The character of Anna: I mean, she can be nasty or whatever, but they should not expect me to like her. Her attitudes could have fit in another type of archetype, but not the romantic lead, no ways.
I really appreciate your comment. Thank you.

Amazing review like always, Pearl. I'm yet to see this movie, so I have no real opinions of my own. Only watched this because I realized once the buzz was over, I'd probably not see it for a very long time.
Having gotten the sense of what it's about, I'm wondering how you think this film compares with "Scent of a Woman," on the strengths of the relationships portrayed and the emotional journey conveyed.
Not a faith based movie, but it's the one film that comes off the top of my head from all I've heard.

This film was truly a gift to all us. BB is a friend of mine, worked with him in the past.
Listened carefully to your well thought out analysis - great job.
Now about Timi, I think his redemption arc was really predicated on Elijah’s predicament.
As regards the love bit, I agree on your assessment of the romantic rendezvous between the ‘love birds’.
In my own analysis, I quite agree that it was not entirely Faith based. There were inklings of that but the film is essentially about one man’s story of grief and a different kind of redemption

    • @pearlosibu
      @pearlosibu  Год назад

Look, considering that you are BB's friend and have this view is so validating. Thank you.
I'm not sure what about Elijah's predicament would change Timi's mind. If anything, it would be like wait, the same thing is happening to me again? But that's just how my mind works, I guess. But I'm more interested in the relationship between them and how I don't think I saw the depth there. I really wanted to see that from the trailer. I appreciate your comment and watching. Thank you.

@@pearlosibu I agree with you. There was no depth to their relationship. There was no defining factor that turned their work relationship to a family like relationship. Elijah didn't do anything out of the ordinary. It didn't work for me. I think they tried portraying this faith based statement in the movie, "My father was a very special man, who lived is entire life for the purpose of giving me life" but it didn't work. Elijah's relationship with his girl was more pronounced than what he had with Mr. Timi, which ought not to have been.

When i learnt the same person who produced this movie , produced God calling..... ?
I loved the beginning of this Movie Breath of Life it was giving "this is a journey of my life" especially emotions when the Wife and child that scene was (from her tearing her cloth to blind fold her baby girl , I was just imagining what it was like for that lil girl getting burnt it was so 😭).
but the actual spoiler started, with Wale ojo not fleshing his character so well as I have always known him for ....
At some point, I had to start
questioning if the characters are for this movie tho ....
All the Actors know very well how to act their roles in most movies I have seen and that is why I will say YES ,that is award deserving but it's not actually Breath of life that gave them that maybe the tons of likes from Nigerians for this movie but then they are great actors I must say ...it's their cumulative Hardwork in the movie industry
Geneova ,Wale ojo, Chimezie imo Great Great actors
And they were not giving into this movie as they should....
I believe that ,breath of life has a good story to tell us but the Actors getting in character and giving it .
I preferred the younger Timi to have even continued the acting.... what will it take just make him up with the white or grey haired man ...it would have really done justice to a whole lot....

I didn't connect with any of the characters or their motivations, story fell flat but it was visually stunning, they could have done so much more with it, also that part with land still belonging to the queen, rubbed me off the wrong way, why was it framed as though it's something to be celebrated.

It’s why you hear things like “you don’t know how hard it was to shoot that scene…” but that doesn’t matter in a critique. I do BTS after, just for knowledge but not as part of my analysis.
And no; those expressions of anger were cartoonish. I said that. If you want to drill down, what business does a highly educated man have trading knowledge with a small town kid? That was silly. And, he’s had a butler for 30years. Was he abusive to his butler? This was not a fresh wound. That was lazy storytelling. It takes more to write deep wounds that have scabbed over. It's 2060 but Anna's d3ath dat (d!ed) is Dec 1st 2063. How?
Timi d!ed in June 2003. That means Elijah met Timi in January and they only stayed 6 months before Timi's demise.
