I've met Pat Quinn as a newly immigrated young boy from Hong Kong to Vancouver, didn't speak a word of English, huge hockey fan, but didn't even play hockey back then, but he was the nicest human being (and man, TALL, and HUGE) and signed my shirt. God bless him
Pavel Bure was the most exciting player who has ever put on a Canuck's uniform. I believe he had 3 fifty goal seasons and came close to winning the Cup in 1994. That Cup run would not be possible without some brilliant goals during the playoffs. Every night he gave 100% to the point where he injured his knees badly that affected the rest of his career. And yet there is a large segment of fans in Vancouver who blame Bure for deserting the Canucks and demanding a trade. They are dead wrong.
Still wear #10 to this day because of Pav.. most pure goal scorer ever. Passionate hockey player.. Don Cherry is a relic who should have been retired in 95 for this and many of his other comments.. what a joke!
Comments in here make it sound like Cherry did this all the time. You really think Don just decided to make this up out of the blue? He obviously had a source and I don’t doubt that there’s at least an element of truth behind it. And the point of him saying that he always praised Vancouver, is to show that it’s not like he was always pissing on the organization or it’s players and for him to drop this bomb means he trusted the source it came from.
I find Don entertaining but he was out of line here, and kudos for Quinn to come on and, regardless of if Bure did that or not, stick up for his player like that
he was ALWAYS out of line. constantly blasting people for being soft because they were european. Just a disgrace and I'm ashamed that we didn't take him off the air a long time ago.
LOL, even at the very end of his apology speech (if you can call it an apology) for being a racist he has to throw in another racial comment. God Bless you Don... Saturdays aren't the same without you :P
I remember watching this Coach's Corner LIVE like it was yesterday; it's hard to believe it's over 15 years ago. What the hell happened to my life. Sigh. Pretty cool though.
@Inoffensive Name You know what another sign of the years passing? That guy in the uploader's avatar is former Toronto Maple Leafs starter, Allan Bester.
With respect to Don Cherry, and his questionable firing Don was popular for last 40 years. My father idolized him and l would say consensus of true devoted hockey players and fans also, sure he got in trouble,it made sports entertaining ,not controversial!
@leafyutube Agreed; at least with Quinn, no matter how much the Toronto media disliked him half the time & wished for Quinn to get the boot, the Leafs were a contender throughout his coaching tenure. Some of the fans got on Quinn's case as well...I guess the folks in Toronto never realized, until now, how good they had it with Quinn behind the bench. I was skeptical of Quinn myself sometimes, but he did a great job coaching in Toronto.
Don's always been full of hot air. Once in a blue moon he has an interesting, pertinent point to make. But it's been a very long time since I've seen anything like that.
@PlasmaCutter117 Oh my God.. You now have my respect. Sorry for coming off harsh, and God bless bro. I use disgusted as an exaggeration, I rooted for the Bruins in East Conference Finals. Maybe, if by chance, I'd like both teams to meet in the SCF again :3
@bareknuckles2u #1 Rule of TV or radio is "Always have a position". That way fans will either love you or hate you...either way, they will always listen.
Bure, his agent, Pat Quinn, other Canucks management people has already said he never threatened to hold out. Yet people still believe that he did.... so sad those people will believe in anything.
wow, "one thing wrong". he wrongly accused a player of blackmailing his own home team. thats a pretty big insult. does anyone know if it violates the law?
Bure is all about the money?? Pavel payed money out of his own pocket so that he could play in the NHL. The Russians were insisting on 50k from the canucks as a transfer fee, and they wouldn’t pay. Bure says I will pay the 50k if it means I can play now. So he did. Once he got here, he showed nothing but crazy enthusiasm for playing in the NHL every game. He was ferocious in the 94 playoffs and was one game away from his childhood dream. Anyone who says THAT guy was all about the money and would sit out Game 7 for the cup for more money is completely full of shit. I don’t know where the rumour started and I know Cherry doesn’t have the imagination or cynical motives to make up that story. Somebody started it and Cherry bought it - because Russians bad, I guess. Maybe management had been floating the claim as a back up plan if Bure couldn’t be signed, or if he had to be traded due to finances. The city would have lost its mind if Bure was traded. Only Bure’s agent and management really know what happened with negotiations. But there is no way in hell Bure would betray his teammates and put an ugly stain on his career as a negotiating tactic. I have never heard a Canuck player hint that this was true in all the years since. It says a lot about Don that he bought it and would repeat a rumour like that on the air. The man never did have a filter.
Quinn messed up the relationship with Pavel in so many ways it's not even funny. Bure asked to be traded almost immediately upon arriving in Vancouver. Between Quinn and Burke it's no wonder the guy wanted out. As for Grapes, you have to make allowances for people who have been through the peak of the Cold War. Until you go back and explore the 1970s, you can't understand where Cherry is coming from.
@PlasmaCutter117 I was born for the last 2 Habs stanley cup and I saw them on TV... besides, the last canadian team to have won the cup is Montreal. I would have liked to see the Nuck's win in 94 and 11, but they didn't. it's a fact!
I like Cherry, but every now and then he'd say something profoundly stupid that can't be defended. This is one of those times. And after Quinn sets him straight, Cherry whines about "making one little comment" and getting raked over the coals for it. Yeah, that wasn't some minor criticism, Don. This was about as stupid as Cherry calling Stu Grimson "a gutless puke."
@lakeerie90s Russians and Canadians are supposed to be white but the're very different races and since he's saying russians are all the same, this is racism. You can call it prejudice or even discrimination if you want, no problem, but it's still the same result.
He's right though. If you give it to him one way, you gotta give it to him the other way. Bure was so grossly mistreated in Vancouver, I wouldn't be surprised if Quinn or his cronies started that rumour, as Ron says Pat never said it wasn't true. He claims he did, but he never did. He doesn't even say it completely in this video, if he does it would have been at 1:13 and it was pretty half-assed.
I love all these guys, except Don McClean for throwing Don under the bus; I have ZERO use or respect for him and I hope he thinks about what he did to save his money and career instead of his honor - as a Buffalo native now living out of state. Also, kudos to Pat Quinn who, God rest his soul, was a REAL man.
Let's review , a few years later pavel bure would end up demanding a trade in public because he didn't want to be a part of a rebuilding franchise, nothing but selfish. Don makes the most sense here because bure would end up betraying the canucks instead of contributing more to help them rebuild
don has no argument. he cant hate on bure, whats he gonna say? he wasnt fast? he wasnt a goal scorer? he wasnt tough as hell? he wasnt a game changer? sorry mr cherry, bure was all of those and more. don cherry was is and always will be a douch
I would have loved to have seen Pavel Bure and the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup in 1994. Then have Mr. Bigmouth himself Don Cherry go on the ice, bend down and kiss Bure's skates! I've always hated Don Cherry. Trying to get Don Cherry to appreciate Pavel Bure's talent is like trying to get a crocodile to play a saxophone.
I lost all respect for Pat Quinn after he took a cheap shot at Bobby Orr from behind. Quinn crosschecked Orr from behind causing Orr to hit his head on the crossbar of the Leaf hockey net.
@Skrangelben I will make an assumption that you will become more conservative as your grow older and wise. I am also chucking out terms in the limited forum of RUclips. Glad you are smiling as I am too. Love RUclips. I just wish more people would provide a comment or 10 while in the line up for a movie or a red light. Bring out the bull horn! ha ha
I walked in the dressing room of the Canucks during a series of 3 games in March back in 1995. My buddy played for the Canucks in the Pacific Stadium and I enjoyed a few cold ones as I read fan mail. Bure, Linden, Valk and Pat were all super cool....but I always wondered why the Russian mafia were in the dressing room.
I'm sorry. I've always disliked Cherry for his prejudice.. I should tell you most Canadians love Ovechkin over Crosbaby, in the olympics or world hockey tournaments I always cheer for Russia:) Russian hockey players are truly something special.
@SlightlyRaisedEyebro Hey, relax, dont get so emotional, its a game we all love. I never said vancouver didnt do well, im just saying there was so much hype around them, they were "guaranteed" to win, and they lost on home ice. Not to mention, they had the best record in wins at home, too. So you're sitting there, saying that boston is worse than them, when they came back from being down 2-0 in the series, and took it all. So be disgusted all you want, just dont cry anymore. thanks
I loved watching Bure, but definately got the vibe that he wasn't the truest player to his team, I could definately see him leaving for not getting enough dough
@PlasmaCutter117 Are my feelings hurt bro? I'm spewing all those hearts, they ain't even hurt. I can't be disgusted by a Stanley Cup win? When did I say that bro? I'm disgusted by their performance, why didn't they sweep? Answer it please
@Kipperluongo How did he betray them exactly? Cut the loyalty nonsense this is a business and he asked to be moved. I guess every other player who has asked to be traded is also selfish? He didn't want to stay in Vancouver, you make it sound like he stabbed someone in the back.
@SlightlyRaisedEyebro Nah, I just dont care for any more of your replies obviously this conversation is going no where. You and I can argue all we want, but it doesn't change who has the cup. OK, bro? got it, bro? OK thanks bro! :D Cheers!
holy christ, cherry can barely speak correctly even 15 years ago. thought his incoherency was just a recent thing. don't get me wrong, he's a national treasure, but he muddles his words and sentences to shit and can rarely pronounce a player's name right (kevin BIESSKA?)
and since then there are still rumblings that Bure has alwayd been with the Russian Maffia. Still, I would love to see GMs go on TV and point blank say what they think.
Ron: - How do you know it happened?
Don: - It happened!
Hard to argue with that.
+tillinternet That's why millions love him...he doesn't take garbage.
+Gary Taylor He spews it out of his mouth.
Yeah he just speaks it!!!
Yeah but he shouldn't say stuff if he doesn't know with absolute certainty. And I love Don.
Don Cherry reminds me of Trump
I've met Pat Quinn as a newly immigrated young boy from Hong Kong to Vancouver, didn't speak a word of English, huge hockey fan, but didn't even play hockey back then, but he was the nicest human being (and man, TALL, and HUGE) and signed my shirt. God bless him
Don Cherrys rants reminds of 80's WWF wrestlers when they did their promos..lol
Yes!! Amazing how I never made that comparison until I saw your comment! Ron is Gene, and Don is "Grapeswrath". Haha. 🤣🤣
LMAO yeah totally
Cause don cherry said so
Don Cherry reminds me of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan when he did promos 😆
I remember watching this when it was live. Good for Pat Quinn for defending his player.
It's too bad he didn't do it more quickly because it was one of the reasons Bure wanted to leave.
Good on Pat Quinn for not letting up on his friend.
Pavel Bure was the most exciting player who has ever put on a Canuck's uniform. I believe he had 3 fifty goal seasons and came close to winning the Cup in 1994. f...k ya...best Canuk Ever
Still wear #10 to this day because of Pav.. most pure goal scorer ever. Passionate hockey player.. Don Cherry is a relic who should have been retired in 95 for this and many of his other comments.. what a joke!
Back to back 60 goal seasons and basically back to back 60 goal seasons in Florida. 59 and 58
Pavel Bure was one of the best to skate in the NHL. I like him way more than Ovi.
Just this past season, Matthews had the highest goal scoring pace since Bure in the early 00's.
WAY more dynamic, only Bobby Orr was as dynamic!!!!!!!
Pat Quinn the Irish Legend
“All I did was praise Vancouver so therefore it should be fair for me to make shit up”
That's Cherry for you.
Accusing someone of refusing to play Game 7 unless he got a pay raise = "Say one thing wrong"
RIP Quinner
Pat Quinn.
I just found out that I miss Pat Quinn a lot.
Don was smart enough not to mess with The Mighty Quinn.
" I've got nothing against Europeans, I just don't like 'em taking our jobs " Don Cherry
They tuk er jerbs.
Based
Quinn is all class. It'spathetic that Cherry is obstinate about it.
lol I feel for Ron here..
Sounds like Quinn was hoping to catch up with Cherry in the parking lot.
And now 9 more years have gone by...
@Inoffensive Name You know what another sign of the years passing? That guy in the uploader's avatar is former Toronto Maple Leafs starter, Allan Bester.
27 years ago now budd 😅
Hop your life is better now
almost 30 years ago now damn
@dbray1 Whats a douch?
Look at Ron's eyebrows. They looked a little big, but his hair was a bit darker than I thought because of the lighting in the studio.
I miss Pat Quinn.
Pat Quinn got hit by a train that year, 20 people on that train died.
With respect to Don Cherry, and his questionable firing
Don was popular for last 40 years. My father idolized him and l would say consensus of true devoted hockey players and fans also, sure he got in trouble,it made sports entertaining ,not controversial!
I would rather have Quinn as a friend because you know where you stand with a stand up guy like that. Ron? Not so much.
Yes he needs to be brought back.
"it made sports entertaining ,not controversial"
Did you miss the part where he slandered a player? That's not entertainment, that's bigotry.
@@AC-gw4qu You do realize you're a certified idiot right?
Cherry always was a bigoted loudmouth fool. Nothing but racial stereotypes.
Don was wrong, I'm a Canucks guy, but I love him anyways. He a true good old Canadian boy. Same with the big Irishman. Both beauties.
So this is is the start of the CBC/ Vancouver feud
I thought you had to be a hockey player or a hockey professional to not like Van. Now were moving on to sports broadcasters....yeesh.
Don's always been full of hot air. Once in a blue moon he has an interesting, pertinent point to make. But it's been a very long time since I've seen anything like that.
*****
Rather divisive comments, I have to say.
+Chris Wright B.S. Don has forgotten more about hockey than you will ever know.
Here after Don Cherry finally got fired in Nov, 2019
how did he know what happened? orite he doesn't
Vancouver got Bure for peanuts and would hardly budge. I'm all for profit but in this case, I was on Bure's side....................
@bareknuckles2u #1 Rule of TV or radio is "Always have a position". That way fans will either love you or hate you...either way, they will always listen.
Why are Ron and Don’s hands so close to each other?
It was a power struggle.
How the fuck did it take another 24 years to get this goon fired?
Well said...
There hasn't been a more exciting player along with Bobby Orr that has ever played the game anywhere!!!!!
Forgot about Flower Guy Lafleur ?
Look at Ron Maclean!
classic stuff... can't anyone watch this video and like everyone? I like Cherry, Quinn, and Bure.. still a great clip.
@vertgg no it isn't
Bure, his agent, Pat Quinn, other Canucks management people has already said he never threatened to hold out. Yet people still believe that he did.... so sad those people will believe in anything.

Twice about Irishmen? I didn't realize was that flat out lunatic.
Don Cherry has been old my entire life lmfao
@jessc1979 I don't think so, Don's always been against greedy players
Cherry and MacLean in top form.
Quinn messed up the relationship with Pavel in so many ways it's not even funny. Bure asked to be traded almost immediately upon arriving in Vancouver. In a decade, we'll hear about luongo mistreatment.
are these guys wearing toupe's ?
+sytty Toupe??? Who the hell would buy a toupe that looks like that?
Don cherry is the same fossil who said jarri kurri was nothing without gretzky.

Ok but did Bure Blackmail the owner like Cherry is saying with no proof?
0:39 "I know there's some prejudice in his game..."
You don't know half of it.
Quinn was a classy guy... can't believe the Leafs fired him...

It's 2012 and Don Cherry is still on CBC. Just retire already, old man.
probablystalkingyou better yet, say something that gets you fired and tarnish whatever shitty legacy he had left
Dons lucky Ol' Patty Quinn didnt knock him out.
@PlasmaCutter117 TROLOLOLO, you kidding me bro? You must care my sweet potato, you responded to my ever sweet comment
Quinn would destroy Grapes in a scrap. ☘️ vs 🍒
Good Irish Guy!
@Andrei46Kostitsyn don cherry is not a joke
that's how we all Russians feel living outside Russia.... Russophobia sucks
I'm sorry. I've always disliked Cherry for his prejudice.. I should tell you most Canadians love Ovechkin over Crosbaby, in the olympics or world hockey tournaments I always cheer for Russia:) Russian hockey players are truly something special.
@Skrangelben ha ha ha. You are likely a lawyer...twistywordman
@swassontelus cool story bro
@sparwood8 the world would implode
LOL at Don Cherry. It's business. Sheeeesh.
@SlightlyRaisedEyebro Hey, relax, dont get so emotional, its a game we all love. I think Mortal Kombat for sega genesis is the best game ever
Thomas J Killed by Bees I disagree. It's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
O'doyle rules
@Tbagurdrumset94
Too bad shit like this caused him to leave Vancouver.
Isn't funny how people make no distinction between an ethnicity and a race?
pat quinn has a lot of hair.. Donald C loves him though
I loved watching Bure, but definately got the vibe that he wasn't the truest player to his team, I could definately see him leaving for not getting enough dough
@dbray1 Nah, my IQ is slightly above 4...
@kabookiejoe This just in....Earthings aren`t a race either.
@fiskisgod so true
Haha! Nah, more like poor typing. I know I missed the word "be" in that sentence. Nice spelling, by the way! Oh the irony!
@PlasmaCutter117 Are my feelings hurt bro? I'm spewing all those hearts, they ain't even hurt. I can't be disgusted by a Stanley Cup win? When did I say that bro? I'm disgusted by their performance, why didn't they sweep? Answer it please
Cherry is full of crap....he probably still has a crudge on Pat Quinn for knocking out Bobby Orr ....your the best Pat RIP
*grudge
@Kipperluongo How did he betray them exactly? Cut the loyalty nonsense this is a business and he asked to be moved. I guess every other player who has asked to be traded is also selfish? He didn't want to stay in Vancouver, you make it sound like he stabbed someone in the back.
pavel was a fabulous hockey player and dons a great guy....nobody is perfect
like don or not he does stick up for canadians...
Ohh don
@tranceplante hey thats cool man, I think we all know thats a fact lol.
@SlightlyRaisedEyebro Nah, I just dont care for any more of your replies obviously this conversation is going no where. You and I can argue all we want, but it doesn't change who has the cup. OK, bro? got it, bro? OK thanks bro! :D
Cheers!
Pat Quinn would have killed Cherry
Don was pure jerk. His true self showed up so many times over the years. Quinn was great hockey guy and a typical east end Hamiltonian.
holy christ, cherry can barely speak correctly even 15 years ago. thought his incoherency was just a recent thing. don't get me wrong, he's a national treasure, but he muddles his words and sentences to shit and can rarely pronounce a player's name right (kevin BIESSKA?)
@fiskisgod hahahaha perfect
@PlasmaCutter117 Lol. Then the Boston Bruins MUST SUCK BRO. If the nucks are that bad, then why didn't they sweep? LOL
and since then there are still rumblings that Bure has alwayd been with the Russian Maffia. Still, I would love to see GMs go on TV and point blank say what they think.
Cherry's hate for Bure made him even more beloved.
Bye bye Don
