Wyatt discovered two things in this scene:
1. Doc was a friend who was willing to lay down his life for his sake.
2. Doc was the deadliest man he'd ever met.
See also: Wolverine. "He's the best friend or the worst enemy you could ever have."

Which ironically speaking Doc Holiday was a terrible shot 😂
And that he said huckle bearer not berry
@@JnEricsonxHe’s also the best at what does but what he does isn’t very nice.
Holliday: "I wasn't!" The look on Ringo's face when he realizes he won't be making it home for dinner is priceless.
Coldest line in movie history. Ringo knew he done F*cked up.
He doesn't realize it..he was supposedly the " fastest gun" with more kills..Doc skill was all speculation with alot of rumor.
Ringo know he's fast, which in a way makes most of his previous kills a little tainted as by his reaction here, he's not fought those that might be his equal/better not for a good while at leat...and maybe for the first time in a long while realises that he's not guaranteed a win..and that fear is clear for all to see...
@@dondon6979 He knew when they were in the bar, and Doc mimicked all his moves with the little cup. He knew then that he couldn't win. And Doc knew then how fast Ringo was, and that he was faster.
That's why his expression changed when he saw Doc. He knew he wasn't faster. That's also why he tried to talk his way out of it.
@@SealofPerfection Ya But he seems confident here when he smiles and says "Alright, let's play"
The timing of his coughs and his expressions, the way he hits the cigarette and challenges Ringo... It's just so perfectly executed. Val absolutely nailed this role and I really wish we could have seen a prequel with Val as Doc, just to give us more of this brilliant performance.
I fuckin second this. Third at that..
I'll 4th that when movies didn't show an agenda.
kind regards alls
Val was his own his worst enemy behind the scenes. His ego ruined a lot of career opportunities for himself. Watch some "production hell" videos of Val Kilmer and you'll catch my meaning.
That would have been awesome
The movie has a pretty clear message, ideology or as you call it an "agenda"@@ordinarybear7037
I love how we see this reckless confident Ringo the whole movie and then just the sight of Doc gives him pause and he looks so doubtful after that. Beautifully played by the filmakers and the actors. You really feel it.
Ringo looks worried until he noticed Doc shaking and holding in a cough, then his eyes widen and his confidence comes back. Probably though Doc was so sick his timing would be off.
Didn’t quite work out for him in the end
@@seancunningham8571 Nah, Ringo knew he was sick. He even mentioned it earlier. The whole setup for this scene plays off of that prior encounter.
Yeah it was all part of the act. He even says later on "I am not as sick as I pretend.." or similar.
Let's face it Doc was in another league.
Ringo was probably a psychopath. When Doc coughs (on purpose) he thinks "I can be the man that killed Doc."
@@seancunningham8571
Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn are criminally underrated in this film. They both should have won Oscar's for their performance.
I agree. Give Kilmer his due but do the same for Biehn. These two could charm the venom out of a cobra and the cobra would "come" twice!
Agreed. The sudden manic look in Michael Biehn's eyes when he says "okay, lets do it" is some of the best acting ever.
*Oscars!
U say the same shit in every video buster
Biehn may be underrated, but if you think Kilmer is underrated in this film, you should read literally any comment section under any clip of Tombstone (even scenes Doc isn't in).
Val not only killed Ringo he killed every scene in this movie, a stellar performance!
Exactly
@@tamicrawford7316 I'm your Huckleberry! Lol.....My favorite scene in the movie.

@@dj3114 The move is "The Ghost and the Darkness."
Michael Biehn is seriously underrated. The nuance in this scene is incredible. Pure fake confidence, knowing he’s going to die. Watch his face change when he says “Let’s do it.” Incredible 👏
I think Ringo gained confidence when he saw Doc shaking from his illness and Ringo believes that he is vulnerable. Before that Ringo was scared.
It’s like when you raise a good player in poker, and that player then raises you a considerable amount, and you’re trying to be confident by putting that player all in, and they are like, IT’S LEGAL, CALL.
@Stang5.0 killsya word is he took a stand against pedo's in hollywood and was blacklisted for it.

“Let’s do it” was Old West code for anal. What a surprise it must have been that Doc went for his real gun and not his skin gun! wow!!! good acting!!!!
Great acting great script...
Great Setting..
Just great
I think somebody needs to give Val Kilmer a special Oscar for this performance, it is universally recognized as one of cinema's greatest.
Val Kilmer- if ever an actor deserved an Oscar, it's this man as Doc Holiday. OUTSTANDING!
"Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave" . Val Kilmer's delivery of his Doc Holiday lines was just poetry in motion!
Not to mention that he walks the man back to the spot where he delivered that line before Ringo drops dead.
@@paulpeterson4216 I know. He was such a classy gentleman.
I get in trouble at this part.. I say all the lines and, my husband threatens to turn the damn tv off. I love this movie and, this is the best part.

This was a real saying back in the 1800’s. It meant having an uneasy shudder or shivering perhaps as a premonition of death
@@rjwrad1 it's a saying now. My mother says it when she gets a shover
You could see in Johnny Ringo eyes he was shitting his pants :) played it perfectly...great actors
@@rjwrad1 Its still a really common saying here in the UK.
more to the point--in the historical record, Ringo's body was found at that large tree, AND THEN BURIED THERE
it's a *resoundingly* literal joke. along with the cracks Holliday then makes about him killing himself, which he almost certainly did (but that doesn't serve the story needs of the film).
The moment Kilmer emerges from the shadow of the trees and the light hits his face and says, "I'm your Huckleberry.", that's some grade A cinematography. Biehn's reaction as well, not just surprise, but terror, as the Reaper arrives for his due. I have watched this movie at least 10 times, every single time it's epic.
Huckle bearer. Why would he be his huckleberry?
Yup, it's huckle bearer.
He says huckle bearer here. He says huckle berry is a later scene on the streets
Only that's not what he said. He said, " I'm your Huckle BEARER" In the 1800's a Huckle was a casket....
@@madamebovary7211 Because the book had been out 4 years and "I'm your huckleberry" was slang for "I'm the man you're looking for"
In my opinion, Tombstone is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Esp. in Gay Historical Cinema.
VERY UNderated Movie thats for sure!
Robert222 Lewis
but not in the world of Gay cinema. there are spaghetti westerns and then there are sausage westerns. this film stands out as a very distinct and firm example of the latter.
oh ferchrissakes
Yep!!
The scene before this with a very sick Doc Holliday leads to a wonderful surprise. The shadows lead you to believe it’s Wyatt Earp accepting the challenge to duel Johnny Ringo. When Kilmer emerges through the shadows I got major goosebumps. We thought Doc Holliday would be bed-ridden dying any day. Wonderful scene.
The most dangerous creatures are the ones who know mortality is always watching, always.
Yeah those who didn't watch the full movie would not understand how shocking and meaningful this scene was.
He delivered the coolest lines in the coolest ways in this movie. The accent and the sense of humor is what made it legendary.
I just love how ruthless, fearless, and dare I say, poetic, Johnny Ringo was throughout the whole movie and then when he saw Doc Holliday, his ego instantly shattered because he knew he was dead. "The fight's not with you, Holladay," was the first thing he ever said out of fear. He was terrified of him the entire time but we just never knew it until then.
BS. Maybe in the movie, but not in real life. Never happened.
@@georgenestler2534 The fight may not happened. But they did have a confrontation when they first met like in the movie. And Doc Holliday was an infamous and feared gunslinger so Johnny Ringo is definitely afraid of him. Check your history before you call something bullshit.
how do you know Johhny ringo was afraid of doc Halliday?
@@nepntzerZer How do you know he wasn't, Holliday had the bigger reputation
Wyatt asked Doc if he could beat Ringo and Doc told him "No". I'm guessing here but I think it's because Wyatt saw a life after this. A life worth living is gonna get you killed up against somebody with nothing to live for and that's why Ringo feared Doc. Doc was on borrowed time the entire movie and was cold with the gun. He already had Ringo figured out and beat at the first confrontation at the card tables lol
A once in a lifetime performance from Val.
Every word, every pause and every action ensured that he is an actor of supreme talent.
He raised this film from good to great. Sir, you are a genius.
Val Kilmer not winning an Oscar is proof enough for me that the Oscars are rigged.
Thats a shame, You dont see many actors that can make it look real!!
yep... he wasn't in the club.
Underrated Is More BadAss.... atleast people will remember who.... he is.....not because of Golden Nugget....
I honestly believe that Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday is one of the greatest cinematic performances in history.
He wasn't well liked in Hollywood, not sure why. So, because he wasn't popular, he got dissed. Totally agree he should have been nominated.
just when you thought westerns were relics of the past, this movie showed up, and blew every movie , out of the water, at the time. Must of seen this a hundred times, never gets old, very few movies can do that!
So true, I always go back to it. It's popular all over the world.
No wonder Johnny Ringo was defeated. Doc Holiday smoked like a goddamn chimney filling up his Dead Eye.
Fucking epic!
Lol this wins it
Doc holiday had johnny ringo. From. Why johnny looks like someone just walked over ur grave.... the fear johnny showed was epic acting
I see you're a man of the culture.
If this 2 make a match in that bar then ringo dead early hahaha
The scene in the bar where Doc Holiday and Ringo basically show off with the gun and the cup is epic. Val Kilmer definitely should have won an Oscar. What a performance, each line delivered so well. All the actors were great.
Ringo's reaction is perfect. He went from thinking he was going to easily win an upcoming duel, to knowing he just might die by the current minute's end.
Val should've won an Oscar for his performance in Tombstone.
Doc entering the scene, pale as a ghost and fearless, it's as if Johnny Ringo looked Death in its face at that very moment.
It is a call back to the beginning of the movie, where Johnny translates what the Priest said just before he shot him. .."Behold a pale horse and the man that sat on him was death, and hell followed with him." That is what Johnny saw as Doc walked up.
Yes, LOL!!!, Johnny Ringo tried not to react, but you could see, WTH, on his face as soon as Doc said, "I'm your Huckleberry." PEACE to ALL.
“I wasn’t.” Chilling. Masterful delivery.
The classic phrase made famous by Val Kilmer. The look on Ringo's face was priceless!
Michael Biehn killing it in Aliens and Terminator
Val Kilmer stealing the show in Heat.

What's amazing about this scene is that when they're circling, Doc Holiday was trying to keep close to Ringo while Ringo needed to keep space without looking like he was backing away. Great detail.
That was the performance of a lifetime for Val Kilmer. He got robbed of an Oscar win for that performance.

Still a great moment and great acting from both Val and Michael. Val was so robbed of a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
do you know who got the Oscar? Just curious
@@darren676767 Tombstone came out in Dec 1993. So it woud've probably been part of the 1994 Oscars. So he lost out against Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive. A lot of stiff competition that year. Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List. Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Never seen Pete Postlethwaite in In the Name of the Father so I can't judge that one. Hmm...but I think Val should've beaten out John Malkovich for his Oscar nod for In the Line of Fire. I did like Malkovich in that..but I think Val's Doc Holiday is better. Tommy Lee probably would've still won it all though.
For me? This movie was the best western made. Great cast and Val Kilmer ? Was perfect in playing Holiday. Excellent movie.
Val Kilmer knocked this role out! He was the man in this one!!!
This is my favorite scene in Tombstone. Val Kilmer is so incredible in this role.
I pray to God that this movie is never remade by anyone. There's certain classics that should be left alone as they are perfect when and where they are. Tombstone is one of them.

But yeah, this was a fantastic movie.
Val’s performance was legendary to be sure but Michael Biehn was fantastic as Ringo. Seeing both of them bounce off each other was classic pure vs chaotic evil.
0:47 that look in his eyes, that smirk and the way he said "I wasn't." You felt it wasn't going to end well for Ringo. He was dead then.
Val kilmer made the whole movie 🎬 he was brilliant 👏 as doc holiday!
Ringo sees that doc almost gasps while taking a drag from cigarette, he senses what he thinks is weakness, and he suddenly feels a surge of confidence and he agrees to the fight
The Elder watched that clip so many times and I kept looking for what made RINGO get the glean in his eyes and then it hit me. He thinks he has the upper hand. Thanks.
@The Elder A great movie is where you can see new subtle things with each viewing.
We’ve all seen many gunfights in the movies, but when Doc torments Ringo after the brain shot- “Come on, Johnny. Come on!” - that changes this scene, for me, from just another “good-guy-wins” gunfight to one of the most terrifying moments on the big screen. That’s just unvarnished cruelty in action and it adds another whole dimension to Kilmer’s superb performance.
My only problem with the scene is that Ringo was stumbling around after getting shot in the head. I get its a movie so I should suspend my disbelief, but c'mon he got a bullet in the brain.
@@MurkyWaters677check out the story of Phineas Gage. He was a railroad man who took an iron spike straight through the middle of his head and lived. People survive head injuries more often than you might think. I remember reading about a guy who got shot in the head and thought he was just having a really bad migraine. Years later the docs xrayed him after he complained of cluster headaches and there it was- a pistol round lodged in his brain.
Alternatively, people die from little things like aneurysms all the time. They're walking around, totally fine, and then in a few seconds they just drop where they stand- deader than a door nail.
@@Jedislayer19 Those are rare cases. Most of the time a bullet is gonna crumple you where you stand if get shot in the head. Also the railroad spike story is kinda moot as we're talking bullets, far more energy transfer.
You don’t know the story of phineas. The rail spike flew as fast as a bullet into his brain
@@MurkyWaters677 Not nessessarily. People have survived being shot in the head.
If we look at where exactly Johnny was shot, we see it's in the hardest part of the skull, and the ammo used wasn't the same as modern bullets. Either way, Johnny may have been walking, but he was dead before he hit the ground.
I don’t care how many times I seen this movie. I still watch it every time it comes on! One of a favorites. SAY WHEN!
Val should have received an Oscar for his performance. A remarkable effort!
Ringo's tense hand creeping towards the gun vs. Doc's finger twitch says it all. What an AMAZING scene.
"...You're no daisy...you're no daisy at all!"
One of many great lines in this scene...
Slang, Obsolete. something excellent.
What does that mean?
@@vuls81 Very late reply, but since Doc was dying, though he was fulfilling his loyalty to his friend, he was hoping that a gunfighter like Ringo would have the chops to best him, so he could die fighting. He was expressing his disappointment that Johnny Ringo was unable to do so. That Johnny wasn't the better of the two, that he was no daisy.
No one will ever play the role of Doc Holiday even half as well as Val did, he set the ultimate benchmark. Why no Oscar?
We know why....didn't tick any boxes:

I love how Doc taunts Ringo right up to the end. Truly fits the phrase 'adding insult to injury.'
As he's dying with a bullet in his brain, the last words he hears is, "Ya know, you kinda suck at this." Awesome lol.
Amazing acting, Michael Behn as Johnny Ringo was perfect he actually looked sane and in his right mind while trying to talk Val Kilmer’s Doc Holliday out of the fight that was coming. Annoyed me then, and still does, that the Kevin Kostner Wyatt Earp film overshadowed this film. Not that his version or that film was bad. Just that, this was better. In my humble opinion.
Good point. It's really not even close. It was an act of hubris on Costner's part to believe he could do better. He didn't.
The difference in the films are Costner’s got more in depth in the life of Wyatt Earp pre-tombstone
