limengxin the actual device that reads the colors is used in labs, but you can buy these kinds of strips online to check your own urine if you wanted to!
Hey! For a school assignment, we are doing a urinalysis, and for the steps in the lab report, we need to find what we will use. The teacher says that there is the basic answer (the dipsticks) and a more precise answer, which are harder to find but are better. We need to find substances that react to some elements in urine or what are the chemicals on the dipstick that react with the elements in urine. We need to find these chemicals for carbohydrate, nitrogenous wastes, proteins, vitamin C and glucose. For example, I found Fehling's solution or glucose oxidase for glucose (not sure yet). I was wondering if you could help me with what were these chemicals/substances? Tks a lot:)

hi i'm very scared now bcs i just tested my urine with this kit and my glucose level is the second square and i'm really panicking bcs i don't know it's normal or not😭😭😭 Could you pls tell me what it means🙏🙏
Higher Ketones is from eating a low carb / ketogenic diet..... i.e. high fat, moderate(normal) protein, low carbohydrate. High ketones on the strip is NOT from eating a lot of protein!
Well it can be from fasting, and with the addition of protein and fats to that. I used to eat high protein moderate to high fat and had ketones in my urine as well.
Basically, but could be other reasons like a kidney infection or even kidney failure, depends on which tests are positive, not all mean a UTI, like if it's just blood and not white blood cells, could be something else besides a uti. Also you can have a low pH or a high pH and it be a UTI
High leukocytes are also present in a disease called IC ... which is not a bladder infection for years doctors have said I had a UTI but it’s... interstitial cystitis.
If an analyzer is not reading the strips, you would write down which gradient pad it changed to. So for nitrites it would be positive or negative. But others it would be like negative or 1+, 2+, 3+ or 4+, etc.
Hello, I bought some cheap strips from online and i'm unsure whether they're faulty or me and my dad are nearly the same as per the read outs on the strips. Both of us was showing +++200 RBC/ul . I'm unsure by what that means?, but every test that was taken at home shown the same for blood " +++200 RBC/ul", but no blood/ red or brown colour can be seen in the urine, is there something i should be concerned about? the colour on the strip was darkish green after the 60 seconds what the instructions tells me to wait. S.G/Densite is 1.020 is that a concern? It's gotten both me and my dad worried. thanks
Hmm not sure on the validity of the strips without knowing the brand or anything. But you can have red cells in your urine without it being overtly red. Looking at tons of urines a day I can eyeball them and tell, usually a slight pink tinged to a normally yellow colored urine. But I think it's best if you visit a primary care provider with your concerns and get a proper urinalysis test, with microscopic would be best. It could indicate a urinary or prostate problem.
So I took a drug test today I know I'm clean but they said my pee was way to light that it could be diluted even tho I didn't drink any water can it still come up as diluted cause I thought only water can make it diluted.
What’s the best brand for urine test strips to check for protein in urine? Also I got my urine checked twice in hospital and both tests came back negative for protein but I’m still having foamy urine so I want to get a reliable at home test strips to check a third time. Please help me! Also they said my PH was 8 which is pretty high.
I dont know about locally, but pretty sure you can get similar strips on Amazon, but I cant say how accurate those are. If you dont have an analyzer to read the strip and are doing it by hand at the amount of time it says, theres always going to be some degree of user error to factor in when visually determining the colors compared to the chart.
I’m a 13 year old girl who suspects I have a uti. I have all the symptoms except blood in my urine but I’m too scared to tell anyone and it’s been happening for 2 days. I’m scared
A lot of times you may have blood in your urine and not even know it because it's in such small amounts. But if you are having symptoms I would definately mention it to someone who can take you to the dr or clinic. UTIs arent anything to be afraid of! Many women get them for different reasons. They will just ask for you to pee in a urine cup and will check it to see if it looks like a UTI, give you a script for antibiotics, and be on your way! 😊
Medical Maura You know what that doesn’t sound too bad. Thx for the advice you just got a 13 year old to go to the doctors😃 not many people can do that
what does specific gravity 1.015- 1.020 indicate? is there any concern we should be awaring? i read google it just saying whether that person is hydrated or dehydrated
That's considered a normal level. It can be hydration, or overly hydrated (at low levels) but higher levels can be dehydration or just the amount of things in a urine (protein, casts, mucus, etc) which doesn't have to do much with hydration status.
sorry for all the questions i have a buddy who has one of these soon and he is pretty worried. Is the dipstick the only part of the entire analysis that would detect any sort of nicotine? could this be seen under a microscope?
First of all, you are talking about a drug screen I assume, so check out my video on that if you wish, that is not this video. Secondly, nicotine is separate from a drug screen, but is usually also off of urine, it is it's own test. Lastly, you cant see nicotine under a microscope, or any drug in a urine in a clinical setting.
Not necessarily, but there's something in there. In addition to leukocytes, blood, etc-yes, but if it's just a higher specific gravity with say higher protein it could be mucus, or kidney issues like a stone or kidney disease. I had a high specific gravity when I was having a lot of back pain, there was quite a bit of mucus in my urine probably due to the inflammation, but it was not an infection.
Leukocytes seem to be measured as “ca cells/ul” (as noted on the dip stick keys). What does the “ca” stand for? Cancer??? Can these decrease without having cancer?
Positive Nitrites means your urine has nitrite producing bacteria, like E. Coli, so it can be very serious, especially if it migrates to the kidneys. Best to be seen by a provider and get on antibiotics for the infection.
Fasting isn't necessary to take the test but you're most concentrated urine would be in the morning. If you're overly hydrated it may be falsely negative for things. Not sure for keto.
No explanation as to why one gets a distinct change in colors on the dipstick after 5 minutes - no change until 4 minutes. Nothing in the 120 second time.
If there is no color change within 120 seconds for that specific analyst, then it is negative. There could be color changes outside of the time frame due to very small quantities, but are low enough to not quantify.
I have tested high 4+ for CA-Oxalate Crystals i.e. threat for kidney stones. I have read that if citrate levels are low, supplementing citrates is good for preventing stone formation however, I first need to do a 24 hr. (NRO?) risk test for citrate. Is there a home test kit for this? Thank You
I've actually never heard of that test and if you have 4+ calcium oxalate crystals that's a lot and are usually from kidney stones, not just a threat of them. My dad takes chancra piedra an herbal supplement that works to help prevent their formation, but once you have them, it may help some.
If I just take Suboxone, why did my test from urine possible show a positive for oxicodone ? They are sending it off but do you know what or why is could have came up positive for that? Please help me understand thank you so much!
Actually I have found a medtox pdf that has some interfering substances listed for each type of drug, and what can cause a false positive. Since Suboxone is made up of Buprenorphine and naloxone I looked them up. It does have naloxone listed as a possible false positive for oxy at a pretty high concentration of 1O,OOO ng/ml when the cut off for ocycodone is normally 1OO ng/ml of oxycodone. So not sure how feasible that is, but it is a possibility. It's at www.medtox.com/resources/images/6817.pdf
These same parameters, basically seeing if you have a UTI, or something looks off with your results, if you are diabetic they would also do a urine microalbumin.
Can a test read higher blood levels with a very small amount of urine sample? Or what if that small amount of urine wasn't conducted midstream? Basically i peed straight into the cup, i was only able to pee like 3 to 5 table spoons. They said i have large amounts of hematuria. But i took it a week ago and it showed moderate. I don't smoke i don't drink. But i have the cold/flu. And i originally went in because i had epidymitis. Now they want to do a cystoscopy??? Im 27yrs old. I really don't want to do the procedure....
+Hustlas Story it could if the small amount of urine is concentrated, but it could go the other way too, that theres actually more blood in the urine.. hard to say when you arent sure if the small sample size is indicative of the whole or not. Regardless, there really shouldnt be hardly any blood in a sample, unless a woman is on her period and it's not a clean catch.
jhummax I would compare it to the color chart on the bottle of sticks you have.. not all are probably the exact same color change because ketones on these sticks go from white to a purple, so not sure about dark grey.
Hy, was at clinic ND I had abdominal pains around my lower tummy so they test me with urinary test ND told me that they saw blood on my urina due to test ND asked me if I'm on my date I said no so I'd like to know where does the blood come from coz was really not on my date
You can have blood in your urine for various reasons. Most commonly a UTI, kidney infection, kidney stones, etc. Some people just have trace blood all the time in their urine, not that that's too great to have, but I, myself do.
I’m not sure if i understand if specific gravity being very dark blue like 0-1 is good or bad. I feel very thirsty all the time and the test strip is dark blue. Trying to get enough money to see a doctor right now..
With specific gravity and if your strips are similar to these where the dark blue is closer to a specific gravity of one which is basically water, that would mean your urine is very deluded which means you are plenty hydrated, which isn't really an issue. So you can't really go off specific gravity for diagnosing a problem as to why you are so thirsty, though. If the test strip was very dark blue on the glucose square then I would say that sounds more like a diabetic, as they can be thirsty a lot. I hope you can get some proper testing done to find out more about your health!
Hi I have questions. Is there any different taking urine in the morning and in the afternoon? I've take my urine during 4pm. I have pee in the morning around 8am and between 8am-4pm I have not pee. And at 4pm I have pee for urine test. The doctor says I have no problem however I do not know wether it's accurate since I have taken my urine test in 4pm
Depends, it can show different results, possibly ketones in the morning from not eating overnight, but shouldn't be that much different, but urine would be more concentrated in the am versus later in the day.
What happens when someone buys fake pee and they use that to do a drug test will it show up or does it come out normal im just curious because I seen a smoke shop that sells fake pee for drug test and I was curious
Hi Maura, I am doing an assignment where I am designing a urine analysis cup for screening diabetes. I listened to your whole video and it was very helpful, thank you. However since my assignment focuses on diabetes I am hoping if you could let me know which indicators on the dipstick are the most important for an initial screening? My guess so far is the glucose column and possibly ketones too. I want it to be very straight forward like a pregnancy test but also not be misleading as to put people at ease who may have diabetes.
Yes ketones and glucose would be the most important "pads" to have! Ketones for diabetic ketoacidosis and glucose, well most diabetic people have glucose in their urine, every ones different and has a different threshold, but around a glucose of 150 in their blood compares to glucose showing up in urine I've noticed.
@@MedicalMaura Hey, thanks for the fast reply. So if I really wanted to simplify this product I could make it with just a glucose detection pad as that will show up results no matter whether the ketone pad detects anything (I also saw on another video that ketone detection can be a bit more complicated). This is for a home testing kit for early detection, ideally to be used as a kit for motivating people tested with higher than normal glucose levels to go see a doctor. I am interested to know if you think this would be effective for early detection. Additionally do you know by the amount of glucose detected in the urine whether it would be more effective to use this test a couple of hours after eating?
@@Mei-jz2kq yes just glucose would work, as you can have ketones for other reasons, and only glucose should show up in the urine of diabetic people or a pregnant woman with gestational diabetes . And yes. Few hours after food, or maybe even an hour, you would have a higher glucose than say first thing in the morning, so it would be detected more easily if they are diabetic and insulin impaired.
After a certain amount of time (maybe a few hours) since there’s several colours in each tab that could possibly react with the urine to produce the result, will the remaining colours try to bleed through? Or will the result colour, and only the result colour, bleed though more prominently?
Srry just saw your comment. No the results aren't valid after the 60 second time frame, That is why you must either read it at 60 second, or have an analyzer read it then, because the colors will become "darker" or a stronger result as time goes on. After a few hours, though, the colors fade as the reaction is all used up basically!

Usually means there is a small or moderate amount of Leukocytes, or White blood cells, but not jam packed in the urine. Can still be an infection.

Thank you. I circled A and then I was thinking if one wants to collect a 24 hours urine, he or she needs to start in the morning first. Thank you
this was great!! does drinking too much water effect your results? I feel like I received a false negative for a UTI due to drinking too much water.
If it is super diluted it definately could.
My parents taught I lied when they saw my pee because it was very clear but still had a yellow tone and one of them said I put water in it my urine ph was like a 5-6 meaning I did not temper with the container and they still think I lied lmaoooo
What does it mean when the urobilinogen is orange? The only other factor that seem off is specific gravity. Bilirubin is negative.
thx for teaching, well,is this urinalysis device used at home or just in hospitals/labs?
limengxin the actual device that reads the colors is used in labs, but you can buy these kinds of strips online to check your own urine if you wanted to!
I watched a few videos about this subject and no one says what colors You dont want to see on the stick
Tks a lot:)
thank you just one quick question, can this type of analysis detect different types of drugs?
Nope this is to check for things like a urinary tract infection or kidney infection.
Hi i have negative result for bilirubin when i read at 30s as per stated but i found the colour become deeper when time pass (turn to positive when close to 60s). Should i concern about this result?
....What are considered very strong indications of either "GOOD health", or, conversely, "BAD health"?!
.....So, then,....What can be done to help get these key parameters back to a normal/healthy range?!...
I actually made a video on that. It is called Urine test results and your health.

Thanks for sharing, just quick question on reading the result. What happened if just the edge of the protein indicator color changed but not entire area. Is this consider positive or negative ?
hard to interpret as i had my cycle almost a week ago... i will have to retest since there is trace blood and all bleghh female life!
Very helpful breakdown. Thank you! Great job!

Does taking probiotics affect the test result?
Thank you for the informative video🙏
Nope, they shouldn't!

I have to have one of these today. I’m getting tested for diabetes
Hope all goes well!
Medical Maura I’m diabetic 😀🔫
@@Theobozik well that kinda stinks! I hope you can get it managed, whatever type you have!
Thank you. That helped Me out a lot.
Thank you very much for your expert information video 👍🏻
Some segments in the video are stamped not adjacent to each other
i have 2 sides on my test strip 1 side has a dark red side saying eddp? what is that ?
Is it possible to check from.this whether one is pregnant or not?
If I pass a drug urine dipstick test would a pass a lab test?
So keeping it simple.... the further right you are on the chart means you have a bladder infection right? What 2-3 are for bladder infections?
Basically, but could be other reasons like a kidney infection or even kidney failure, depends on which tests are positive, not all mean a UTI, like if it's just blood and not white blood cells, could be something else besides a uti. Also you can have a low pH or a high pH and it be a UTI
Thanks for your explanation. I am doing Keto diet. What I should look for ?
High leukocytes are also present in a disease called IC ... which is not a bladder infection for years doctors have said I had a UTI but it’s... interstitial cystitis.
Blondehairedwarrior yeah I actually talk about it in some of my videos.. I have of IC, too!

This is awesome
Thank you so much. How do i record the results again? Is it by using +++ when something is positive
If an analyzer is not reading the strips, you would write down which gradient pad it changed to. So for nitrites it would be positive or negative. But others it would be like negative or 1+, 2+, 3+ or 4+, etc.
@@MedicalMaura thank you. You are very helpful and kind. God bless you
Hello, I bought some cheap strips from online and i'm unsure whether they're faulty or me and my dad are nearly the same as per the read outs on the strips.
This was really helpful 💖
thank you. because of the quarantine I ask you many questions. I really sorry I don't have access to hospital 😉
So I took a drug test today I know I'm clean but they said my pee was way to light that it could be diluted even tho I didn't drink any water can it still come up as diluted cause I thought only water can make it diluted.
A couple of weeks ago I did a urine test with a test strip my protein was negative but i still get some foam in my pee
This is very helpful. Thank you.❤️❤️
What’s the best brand for urine test strips to check for protein in urine? Also I got my urine checked twice in hospital and both tests came back negative for protein but I’m still having foamy urine so I want to get a reliable at home test strips to check a third time. Please help me! Also they said my PH was 8 which is pretty high.
Very well explained, thanks!
Nice video, good info. Are these test kits sold in local stores? If so, how accurate are they? Thanks for posting.
@@MedicalMaura Thanks for the fast response. Keep posting.
Hi, just want to check with you, how do check your body nitrogen level via urine. ( Urinary Nitrogen Test Strip)
Thx for the advice you just got a 13 year old to go to the doctors😃 not many people can do that
Very informative, Thank you!
You are welcome!
I'm going to school to become an M.A. . I just tried to take a urine sample and the highest one was like a purple color what does that mean.
Super helpful but my UBG is somewhat Blue I can't seem to find a reason for this color anywhere Any idea's ?
Hi can you describe the difference between test and blank?
what does specific gravity 1.015- 1.020 indicate? is there any concern we should be awaring? i read google it just saying whether that person is hydrated or dehydrated
That's considered a normal level. It can be hydration, or overly hydrated (at low levels) but higher levels can be dehydration or just the amount of things in a urine (protein, casts, mucus, etc) which doesn't have to do much with hydration status.
I love marijuana.
My dipstick is always black when I pull it
sorry for all the questions i have a buddy who has one of these soon and he is pretty worried.
So does specific gravity 1.030 means that you have an infection ?
Not necessarily, but there's something in there. In addition to leukocytes, blood, etc-yes, but if it's just a higher specific gravity with say higher protein it could be mucus, or kidney issues like a stone or kidney disease. I had a high specific gravity when I was having a lot of back pain, there was quite a bit of mucus in my urine probably due to the inflammation, but it was not an infection.
Leukocytes seem to be measured as “ca cells/ul” (as noted on the dip stick keys). What does the “ca” stand for? Cancer??? Can these decrease without having cancer?
Not sure what units those are, but it definitely does not stand for cancer. And it would be increased numbers correlate to uti's.
The nitrites on mine show a pink color. Is it something I should take seriously? How dangerous is it?
Positive Nitrites means your urine has nitrite producing bacteria, like E. Coli, so it can be very serious, especially if it migrates to the kidneys. Best to be seen by a provider and get on antibiotics for the infection.
Is fasting necessary to take the test? When is the right time to do the test, especially for Keto? I mean after meal? after exersice?
Fasting isn't necessary to take the test but you're most concentrated urine would be in the morning. If you're overly hydrated it may be falsely negative for things. Not sure for keto.
Good explanation
No explanation as to why one gets a distinct change in colors on the dipstick after 5 minutes - no change until 4 minutes. Nothing in the 120 second time.
If there is no color change within 120 seconds for that specific analyst, then it is negative. There could be color changes outside of the time frame due to very small quantities, but are low enough to not quantify.
Hi!! I have a question.. if you have prescription medicine that you know can show up what will they do with it??? I have Wellbutrin.
Awesome ......that's great video , thank you
I have tested high 4+ for CA-Oxalate Crystals i.e. threat for kidney stones.
What is the significance of Ascorbic acid in urine
very informative. Can drugs be detected via dipstick?
Not this type of dipstick, no.
Thankyou very much for this video, it was very very helpful
For how long should i keep the tester in the urine?
Each set of strips is different, but usually around 30 seconds- 1 minute
Wuld i be able to pass a urine test for achohol in 60 hours???
Thanks really helpful
Thank you. Really helpful. Love from 🇮🇳
So what does your average urine test at a yearly doctors appointment test for?
These same parameters, basically seeing if you have a UTI, or something looks off with your results, if you are diabetic they would also do a urine microalbumin.
@@MedicalMaura something off like ? STI's?
@@Keepit-dy3yq yeah it could point in that direction, especially if it's a visibly motile one like Trichomoniasis
How do you know if the urine contained THC?
When it states 60 seconds, do you measure at 60, or you have up to 60 to measure that specific chemical?
60 seconds means you should read them all at 60 seconds, which if you are doing it manually is impossible to do, so as close to 60 seconds as you can!
Hi, Mura i have tested my urine and my gravity is yellowish in color and my ketones is dark grey in color, are they still in normal range?
jhummax I would compare it to the color chart on the bottle of sticks you have.. not all are probably the exact same color change because ketones on these sticks go from white to a purple, so not sure about dark grey.
Thank you so much for your reply and help.
Wow very informative
Medical Maura thank you so much for your quick answer!! Very appreciated
How do you undergo a Urinalysis test?
Hi I have questions. Is there any different taking urine in the morning and in the afternoon? I've take my urine during 4pm. I have pee in the morning around 8am and between 8am-4pm I have not pee. And at 4pm I have pee for urine test. The doctor says I have no problem however I do not know wether it's accurate since I have taken my urine test in 4pm
Depends, it can show different results, possibly ketones in the morning from not eating overnight, but shouldn't be that much different, but urine would be more concentrated in the am versus later in the day.
try to look at the lens for the effectt you really want: (Like your looking at us)
What happens when someone buys fake pee and they use that to do a drug test will it show up or does it come out normal im just curious because I seen a smoke shop that sells fake pee for drug test and I was curious
Well I guess it depends on how good of a fake it is? Idk honestly, except it would fail for the temperature.
@@MedicalMaura Thanks Maura, this helps a lot!
Fantastic explanation... Thank you
hi. How can I test presence of urine in food ? thx
My special gravity is 1.025 and I drink a lot of water but my protein is good do I have problem with my kidneys
That isn't out of range but just looking at that I couldn't say that you for sure don't
What if it shows blood...?
