The magic thing about Osipova is that she so completely manages to be a miracle of dance on the bottom and totally, utterly human on the top. It makes her so appealing and real at the same time as being utterly superb.
Thousands of hours of practice; gallons of sweat and tears; tired, aching and torn muscles and ligaments;, pressure, pressure, pressure and here is the result, absolute perfection. Thank you all.
I had never seen the Tatiana variation before but my goodness it’s so expressive and beautiful. I didn’t even know the story of Onegin at all but I could tell so much just by the variation. The choreography is amazing, and Nina did such an incredible job at expressing Tatiana’s frustration and telling the story through her dancing
That one just blew me away with the acting. She conveys so much emotion through her dance. I felt there was a real character present, not just beautiful dancing.
There's a video of Iana Selenko floating around YT that's one of the best I've ever seen, esp with the arabesques at the beginning---perfect control and beautiful working through the foot coming down from pointe.
@@brackthomasfischer6139 I was introduced to her only a year or so ago---it was Corsaire or some other showpiece pdd given by Dance Open, and I loaded it mainly to see Vasiliev. She does everything well and has technique, musicality, and elegance. There's even footage of her rehearsing the pdd from Theme and Variations, and she looks good doing Balanchine!
@@minissa2009 Iana is gorgeous:). But the one to beat is always going to be the great Gelsey Kirkland, who achieves things with this variation that seem impossible: ruclips.net/video/_-Tgfx5jFkI/видео.html
@@kdub10009 I didn't know that footage existed! Thank you so much. I only ever got to see her act 1, and it was during her downward spiral. Something happened and Cynthia Harvey came out for act 2. She had such incredible control and lyricism. Is there footage of her act 2?
I've never seen Sofiane Sylve before. She danced the Sleeping Beauty Dream scene so Enchantingly! LOVELY SELECTION OF WORLD CLASS BALLERINAS DANCING BEAUTIFUL VARIATIONS. THANK YOU! 💖💙💖💙💖
And the always great Sofiane Sylve; I just wouldn’t have chosen this variation/choreography as the best example of her (frankly astonishing) talents. Also Tiler Peck is among those conspicuously missing from this collection (as much as I love Bouder, no one compares to Peck in the Tchai Pas variation).
In matter of choice of No 1 ... I agree - it's from La Bayadere (the most beautiful ballet I ever have seen). I agree - it's Gamzatti 's one (my favourite character - no way a villain)... but definitely different variation. I prefer so called "temple variation" from the last act. Maybe less choreographically complex, but with what an incredible emotional load. It is not enough to dance it technically well ... here you have to convey the drama of the situation. Here is link to this variation, performed by same ballerina (Nunez) : ruclips.net/video/AbvAeT3K5fY/видео.html
Nunez was one of the best in this, but I also really love her Nikiya. Dating myself here, but I was in NYC when this premiered and Cynthia Gregory danced Gamzatti. I think the music here is John Lanchberry {best dance conductor ever} and it's Makarova's choreography. Still my favorite production ever!
I actually felt that she was the least pleasing to watch among the whole group, and have always found her wildly overrated. But to each his/her own opinion.
@@kdub10009 really?, she's my favorite after Zakharova because of how strong, yet graceful she is. The modern dancers who are strong aren't graceful, in my opinion, but Osipova is both and has amazing naturally expressive face
Than you for this compilation. They are all magnificent ballerinas, both technically and artistically, but I have to admit that if I had to single in out one ballerina she would be Myriam Ould-Braham
Very nice, although my preferred Sylvia is still Balanchine's. Interesting to see bits of two Ashton ballets choreographed for Fonteyn---the sheer speed of some of the footwork always amazes. And I only know this because I just watched it in the last half hour, but "Gamzatti's" variation is actually from a film of the Corsaire pdd (look at the costume) . I don't know why RB sometimes uses the Gamzatti music rather than the other two (one from the Don Q vision scene) more commonly used. Thank you for introducing me to Sofiane Sylve, she's extraordinary. And for including so many of my favorite ballerinas who are currently dancing, from Bouder to Obravtsova and yes, the hugely underrated Novikova.
Yes, I did cheat a bit with the Gamzatti variation, but it was the only non-Royal-Ballet-with-their-vigourous-copywrite version of Nunez that I could easily find!

That Aurora Dream Variation choreography is so lame compared to the versions usually performed by the French and Russians :-) It's always a bummer for me when I hear the start of that beautiful piece, to then have it lead into that dull choreography.
IKR? I've had other balletomaniacs argue with me that it was written as a pas d'action so it's more important that it advance the plot, but as someone who's both danced and choreographed, that music *begs* for sumptuous choreography rather than the little game of hide and seek with Lilac and the nymphs.
@@minissa2009 The music is incredible for Aurora to flow through and interact with, as if in a dream or vision of deeper meaning. The overly repetitious choreography wastes that. Would love to see many RoH dancers perform the other version.
@@dominusmaximus7665 Have you seen one specific version of the choreo that is standard from company to company? I remember an old Kirov production with Kolpakova that used this very dance-able music for dancing, but I wasn't sure it was standardized in any way, and I think current Mariinsky uses something similar but not the same. I think most Western productions are based on what Nicholas Sergeyev brought over from Russia. I wonder if, like the White acts in Swan Lake, it would have looked different if Ivanov had choreographed.
I am shocked that you didn’t -not just include - but did not include at the top of the list Svetlana Zakharova. She is the prima ballerina assoluta of all the dancers. I see Osipova as second and perhaps succeeding Svetlana in time. Not that the the ladies you have included are not good. They are in fact very good, with some excellent in technique. But I noticed certain flaws like dancing with a “deadpan” expression. Dancers must be actors as well and look like they at least enjoy the dance. Included should be what they do with their arms and hands, providing a little bit of style to the dance. Overtime, perhaps the dancers here will mature to a level of Svetlana Zakharova, but not yet.
