I just saw Mike Campbell in Phoenix last night. During the night, people were already going up by the stage, so my mom suggested we should too. I had my 40th Anniversary shirt on. I waved to Mike, put my hand on my heart and said, "Love you, Mike!" He blew me a kiss and said, "Love you, buddy! He handed me his guitar pick! He played "Listen to Her Heart" after that. It's one of my favorites.
Saw Mike and the Dirty Knobs play with Lucinda Williams in Las Vegas recently. I absolutely love TP and the HB, but Mike's show left a lot to be desired. The sound didn't seem to fit the hall (Brooklyn Bowl), as it was more racket than music. Also, I unknowingly expected Mike to play his refined, understated type playing as he did with TP - instead it was like playing all his licks in like every song, just no restraint at all.....just too much. At least if I ever see them again I'll know what to expect.
