I can't tell you a single town, but can tell you some sights in Baden-Württemberg. I was born in Baden-Württemberg and still live here because it is so pretty. My favorite places are: Nebelhöhle (which means "fog cave") in Sonnenbühl, also many places at the "Schwäbische Alb", the "Ehemaliger Truppenübungsplatz" in Münsingen (which means "former military training area", it is now a bautiful biosphere area) and last but not least: "Blautopf" in Blaubeuren (which means "blue pot", it is a beautiful spring out of a cave, where the water has a lovely turquoise color.
Sorry for my bad english skills 😅

Indeed I always think that when I watch him exploring new things. And especially when you were inside the church, Conner. I have seen lots of tourists not able to turn down their voices when they are inside a church, even when they are Christians and would do it automatically at home in their own church.... I love this respectfulness.

Hey Conner :), I am from the northern part of the Schwarzwald, so I already knew those three cities/places, but it was really nice to see how you discover it. Thx for making such videos about old city towns. Before I am going to answer at least some of your questions, I would suggest you to revisit the cloister of Hirsau when you actually can walk around when you are already in this area to see the rest of Weil der Stadt. Inside the cloister there is a really lovely old church with beautiful paintings in it. Sadly the really big church of St. Peter and Paul was burned down from the French in the Pfälzischer Erbfolgekrieg in 1692. So the big tower, the Eulenturm (owl tower), is actually the only remaining part of the cloister. Back in the day there were actually two of them. Standing at the tower you can see the length of the old church which was tremendous. But again I can recommend you to watch the still remaing small chapel/church which is called Marienkapelle. The fun part of it is, that this whole complex isn't the oldest part of this complex. On the other side of the river there still is the old St. Aurelius church which could be mistaken as a barn from the outside. Beside that there is also a museum about this topic. If you are into hiking then there is the opportunity to do a beautiful hike starting at Ernstmühl into the Wolfsschlucht, going to the Fuchsklinge and the observation deck to see the town of Hirsau, then to come down to the cloister Hirsau. After that you stay on this side from the river and you may go through the forrest to Ernstmühl again.
Beside that you may visit the largest still remaining cloister northern the Alps which is in Maulbronn. I suggest you to do a guided walkthrough there to get all the interesting facts about it. To see such a big cloister in all of it's beauty is breathtaking. Having a cloister which is so good intact is a big blessing.
There is also a cloister deep down in the black forest at Alpirsbach which can be combined with visiting the largest black forest cuckoo clock and the Triberger waterfalls, which are located at Triberg or near from it. There you can also see the lovely craftmanship of making cuckoo clocks.
Other then that you can also visit the town of Herrenberg or like Tübingen which both are more in the southeast compared to Calw. They are also very beatiful places.
As a list tip, if you are a fan of amusement parks, you should give Tripsdrill a shot. That park not only has really cool rides in it, but those rides are all based on german tales from the southwest.
To answer some of your questions:
29:09 Yeah that's right, in Germany there are many of those paintings. Often they are on old buildings to show the viewer what kind of business there was inside of it. Like in my small town in the north of the Schwarzwald we have some of them on buildings in which are bakeries for centuries in it.
29:48 A Gerberei is something like a crafts business where hides and skins are tanned.
40:38 Fachingsumzug or like Fasnet - Many fools in the southwest trace the origin of "their" Fasnet back to pre-Christian, pagan roots and tell that during Fasnet, with its noisy festivities, winter is driven out and the imminent arrival of spring is celebrated. The Fasnet was originally the last opportunity to celebrate and feast lavishly before the start of the 40-day Lent.
41:14 It is like a blessing from the catholic church which is often given by child "star singers". CMB is latin and means "Christus mansionem benedicat" which can be translated in Christus segne dieses Haus (or like Christus give your blessing on this building). Back in the day CMB had a different meaning for the three kings from the east (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar). The number at the end is like the date of the year - normally you get a house blessing annually. Greetings :)

    "Dienst" means service in German.
The Winterdienst is the winter service where when it’s snowing employees of a municipality or city drive around with a snowplow and clean the streets from snow and salten the streets. They also do this on larger sideways. At some ways there‘s such a safety advice sign which tells that there will never be Winterdienst. At the entrance to their own houses, residents must do their own winter maintenance.

Hi, I am so happy that you visited my hometown where I was born and lived for decades. A lot more happy that you went in the church, the Stadtkirche Calw!
I held breath as you was standing beside the Great Organ. I learned to play the organ on this instrument for so many years and cannot believe that you was standing right there!!
You asked for an explanation… there it is 😊:
Yes, you use different shoes to play. You need a smooth leather sole so your feet can „fly“ over the pedals while creating the deepest tones. The full pipe Sound of this Organ is incredible and amazing!
Unfortunately the shoes are not mine cause it‘s been 30 years since I took lessions and took an exam right there to be an Organist…
Thank you for this beautiful video !

hey Conner, your German is getting better and better, I love to see how quickly you adapted the "es sieht gut aus" thing. You forgot what it meant when you said it the wrong way?
well let me explain: "Du siehst gut" = you're seeing well....(no, you don't need glasses). "Das Auto sieht gut". = the car sees well. And then you might catch some irritated expressions from the people around you :)
Again, sehen = to see (something), aussehen = to look (like) .
As about the river. You said "Der Fluss fliegt durch die Stadt" = The river flies through the town. :) Correct is: "Der Fluss fließt (alternative fliesst) durch die Stadt."
fliessen (fließen) = to flow, fliegen = to fly
You have seen the "Gerberei Balz" with the painted fur at the wall. No it wasn't a fur trading company. Gerberei translates to "tannery". So they tanned leather here or still do.

About the chalk writing above that door: You were right, Conner, it is sort of a blessing. There is a catholic tradition as follows:
January 6th is "Epiphany Day", literally "three kings day" in Germany, which refers to the three wise men who came from afar to give gifts to the baby Jesus. Their names, as you probably know, were Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. On Epiphany, altar servers go around dressed as the three wise men and ring doorbells. They sing a song and collect donations for the curch, write this blessing over the doors, combined with the new year (e.g 20 at the beginning and 24 at the end of the writing) so that the house is blessed for the New Year. Sometimes they also have a vessel in which incense is burned. There are different interpretations of the meaning of the three letters C, M and B. One of them says that they are the initials of the three wise men.

  • @PLEXXX_
    @PLEXXX_ 2 месяца назад +4

33:44 FYI: The church bells wont ring 15 times at 3pm, they will only ring 3 times. If you think about it, it would be also unnecessary to ring that often because you can distinguish am/pm just by checking if its day or night time.
    Hope that helps...

To answer some of your questions:
The decorations you asked about at 24:48 are signs of an inn/tavern. The trumpet/horn has nothing to do with music, it's the sign of the postal service. So the name of the inn was most likely "Zur Post", which means "right next to the postal station". It's a very common name for an inn, as the postal service a few hundred years ago also transported travellers and they stayed in the inn to rest/sleep.
Regarding the "aus" in "sieht cool aus": It's there because it's the declination of the verb "aussehen" which corresponds to "look" whereas "sehen" corresponds to "see". It's like you would say in english "He sees good" vs "He looks good".

At 19:11 - the pink house right beside of the town hall may look very modern compared to the old timber framed houses but it is actually the oldest house of Calw. It was built around the year 1500 and was made by stone. These timber framed buildings are from the late 17th century - after the French did burn down a lot of towns here during the 30 years' war. At some signs it is often refered about the big burn of the town. I hope you also visited the monastery ruins of Hirsau not too far away from there. Since 2006 I am living here in Calw and I was exploring the old town just in last year and it was very interesting to learn about the history also of this region. So at the church is also mentioned that the stones were from Hirsau where you can also find the ruins of a monestery. There's a huge chappel and the ruins of the actual big church from the monastery is really impressing in size. The old railway station of Calw is also looking very beautiful. It was very interesting to watch your trip to Calw. You did even checked out spots that I haven't seen before.
Ah you've also checked out the monastery ruins. I've never seen so many people there. So it wasn't the perfect time to check out about these buildings of the monastery. In the cloyster crossway they are also doing quite often an open air cinema.
Weil der Stadt is also looking interesting. I've never checked it out. Although I've seen that watchtower from the road many times.

I know that a few freaks😄 especially Americans would see it otherwise and handle it upside down. But when you have a " Butterbrezel" what is very common in Germany, the butter is in between the cutted parts of the upside, weaker and wider part of the brezel. And you held it at the cross part. Otherwise you re hands would get greasy.

The pretzel or "Brezel" as we say in most of Germany has a long history with a lot of myth and legends since 1400, the name is probably derived as far as etymological research would be correct, from the Latin Word "Brachium" wich means "the arm”, presumably referring to the crossing of both forearms in front of the chest. So the smaller parts of the Brezel being upsidedown is likely to be intended. Also we have a pretzel museum in Erdmannhausen near Ludwigsburg, which is also in Baden Württemberg.

„Sieht“ without „aus“ means just looking / seeing with the eyes
Whereas „sieht aus“ means looks (like)
    Sie sieht = She sees
Sie sieht cool AUS = She looks cool

The symbols on the house mean the formation of a guild, for example of bakers or carpenters. The year means when the guild was formed. I think the wrought iron works of art on the houses were placed on the facade as advertising back then.

Those "decorations" are old traditional trade signs, showing that the owner of a shop, restaurant, hair dresser,... is / was part of the guild and earned his master title (Meister).
Keep on the lookout for one with what seems like a star of David on it. Those are actually brewer stars used by the brewers trade long before it became a symbol connected to jews around here. You should find freshly brewed beer there 😉

I love how interested you are in all the small things, signs, and buildings :) Also really decent pronunciation 👌🏻by the way regarding "the river flows through the city" You said "Der Fluss FLIEGT durch die Stadt" but that means "The river flies through the city" not flows. The word is FLIEßT. No G but more of a sharp S sound :) Just a small mistake, but in the end, it means something different. I hope you enjoy your time in Germany!

6:04 Winterdienst is like "winter service" and I think "Dienst" is literally service. The sign means there is no one who removes ice and snow and if you die it's on you.

Hey Connor nice u visited my birthtown and enjoyed the view! regarding your grammar question if i dont add the "aus" you change the meaning from "is looking good" to "has good eyes" kinda. "Dienst" means service or being meintainenanced. So "kein winterdienst" is not being taken care of in the winter.

  • @jonaskreuder1817

Winterdienst means "Winter Duty." The city's service to provide you with deiced ways and stuff. If there is no Winterdienst, you have to look for yourself in terms of snow and icedangerous. Sry for my f'ed up english😅. Keep up your videos. I love your perspectives on germany and the world. Greetings from Bad Nauheim/Hessen/Germany.

Fun Fact about "Weil der Stadt": There is a "Winkelgasse" right next to the "Narrenbrunnen". Why is that interssing? Because "Winkelgasse" is the german translation for "Diagon Alley" in Harry Potter, and in 1978 J.K. Rowling was here for a pupils exchange programme. So maybe, just maybe, the old city has in a way inspired Hogsmead, Diagon Alley or Hogwarts... Who knows!
More Fun facts: Weil der Stadt was the hometown of Johannes Kepler.
Also Gerd Diebold was an uncle of one of my friends :D
