  • This has been my winter project. I did this in my garage. I kept the temp up with propane heaters. It's recommended to keep the temp above 50 deg F and relative humidity below 75%. I was able to do both. The Gluvit proved challenging to remove. Took me awhile to get a good process that worked efficiently. That goes for the grinding/sanding of the aluminum to get it ready for the Welander as well. Stuff I wish I knew beforehand. The Wetlander is still curing as I post this, takes 5-7 days to cure for the top coat, I'll be at least that before it hits water.

    Your video was very helpful. I used a "weed burner torch" from Harbor Freight to heat the old Gluv-it coating. It worked great. I then just scraped off the coating. I then used the angle grinder with 80 grit to make sure everything was removed and then cleaned with acetone. The whole process took about 3 hours.

    Would this stuff seal rivets and seams? I have an aluminum boat that I want to seal and was going to use gluvit or coat it. I need it to go into the seams and rivets to seal them up. Would this be better ?

    How many hours did the gluvit removal take? Mine is going slow... but I dont have an air compressor big enough to use a air tool.

    How long do you wait after the primer before you apply the top coat? I'm getting ready to do my 83 alumaweld later this week

      I don't remember exactly, I think maybe an hour or so, the instructions are pretty clear how long to wait between coats. I'm pretty sure it was a feel thing. As long as you cant dig a fingernail into the last coat, something like that. Good luck

      @fishingthepnwwithdave7833 cool thanks. I havnt opened the box yet to look at the instructions yet. Flipping the boat over Thursday to remove the formica counter top material that was glued on it by a previous owner

      too hard to tell, not sure the old gluvit really induced any drag while drifting, just slippery on the rocks and bank

    did the gluvit leak?

    • @fishingthepnwwithdave7833
      @fishingthepnwwithdave7833  Год назад

      As far as I know, there were no leaks coming into the boat. But, it was trapping water between the Gluvit and the alumunium and causing corrosion eating away the bottom.

    Use a large torch (Amazon? ) and a large metal putty knife and it comes off without having to use a chisel.

      For the record Harbor Freight calls it an air scraper, not an air chisel, worked really well. Heating from the bottom with a heater versus torch made it easier for the bigger area's. Already had the heaters, so not extra cost there. Just the propane.
