i don't think the concept of ashfur itself, the emotions and the reactions he gives, are never fully understood to a reader. probably because we never get his pov. all he wants is to be enough, he doesn't want to be forgotten and he craves to be loved. he did everything right with squirrelflight and it still wasn't enough. he felt mocked and played, probably confused too, and angry. the books portray him as someone obsessive and crazy, but really he just doesn't want to be alone. i love the way this m.a.p portrayed him, you all did a wonderful job
While I respect your opinion & I do not know how he is represented within the books, I truly do not think Ashfur just ‘didn’t want to be alone’ or ‘just loved too much’ - Thrush’Pelt is a perfect example of that. Thrush’Pelt loved Blue’Fur, willing to do anything to help her and take care of her when she needed. Not only did Thrush’Pelt not get to be with the love of his life, he helped carry her kits and acted as a very brief father figure to them. He did all of this, while still being fully and utterly supportive of Blue’Fur and her decisions, without any malice intent. Love does not drive a character to attempt slaughter of his crush’s dad, kits, and Squirrel’flight herself.
@@roachdope I absolutely agree, if Ashfur loved Squirrelflight _too much_ then why would he even want to kill "her" kits? He also said that his quarrel was with her, not with Brambleclaw. He let her go only when he got to know that the three aren't hers! So, like said before, if Ashfur _loved_ Squirrelflight, why would he hurt her? It's literally: "I loved Squirrelflight too much so I decided to try and kill her dad, kits and her. That's how love works, right?"
I get him. I feel his pain. He deserved better. It wasn't not Hollyleaf who killed Ashfur, it was Squirrelflight. Ashfur wasn't even trying Hollyleaf killed him. Squirrelflight hollowed him from the inside. He was very good warrior who was always depressed. He's just misunderstood, he never wanted to hurt or make Squirrelflight sad. But after Squirrelflight rejected him so many times, Ashfur's spirit has gone crazy. If you ever liked Hollyleaf or MapleShade you have to understand Ashfur's pain!

I love AUs that just rewrite characters so much better than they are in the books. Like this Ashfur has emotion and depth instead of just being some Squilf obsessed psychopath Great job everyone, even if I'm late !
Love your MAPs a lot! This one really do fell like an anime Warriors! Everybody executed their parts so well and the credits looks wonderful! This AU about how Ashfur was having illusions of the cats that had haunted him (probably his version of Starclan cats or whatsoever) and how he did not actually want to hurt anyone but was driven by madness to lead over to his death was just an amazing idea to have! Dazzling all around!

you know, i’m not sure people really understood ashfur, not because because of the emotions shown, but we never got his perspective of things. while NO, i do not support ashfur actions, i am not an ashfur supporter, i think this map really shows how he was willing to do anything to get squirrel to love him. she wasn’t a crush, she wasn’t someone he loved, she was an obsession. imagine killing your crushe’s dad because your ‘willing to shoe your loyalty’. sounds insane right ?? he wants squirrels feelings to be reciprocated [ THE BROKEN CODE SPOILER ] we see when Squirrel tricks ashfur to say it was him in Brambles body, there was joy in his eyes, hope, that squirrel really loved him. the books merely say “he’s a psychotic cat that wants love” and while he is a psycho, he really wanted to co trot squirrel, and what she did, spend every moment with her. anywho, love the map, looks totally epic !,
This has definitely become one of my new favorite maps! The vibe is just so perfectly matched with Ashfur’s character. I find myself rewatching it all the time! Amazing work to all the talented animators! 💖

I love your design for hollyleaf I see a lot of people give her lighter markings but never such a light color and then the mint eyes! I also like how you gave ashfur a brownish tinge which feeds into my idea that darkstripe is his dad (I imagine darkstripe with some drown on him or a brownish tinge to his fur) I also love the jayfeather design!

I like this AU, it should be Canon. Erin forced Ashfur's evil a lot, as if she made him sick out of nowhere to do things with more complex justifications.

Anyway, I LOVE THIS SO MUCH because so many people forget that Ashfur was, like, close to Cloudtail and Ferncloud at some point. Even the Erins seem to have forgotten that... 😭😭😭

Not even Cloudtail. That arc has so many issues...
i love this more than any other ashfur map ive seen. ashfur maps that try to give some insight into his perspective instead of immediately demonizing him over his actions are my favorite; they show that his character is multidimensional, and that he isnt just some “unstable lunatic incel” like everybody claims. he dealt with trauma, repeated rejection (and im not just talking about squilf), and pressure over failure to live up to the high expectations given to him. everyone in his life was finding love so easily while he had to be the weird outcast. people seem to forget that characters like tigerstar, hawkfrost, and even firestar taught him to associate the idea revenge/emotional fulfillment with causing harm. for tigerstar, it was killing ashs mother for dog bait to get revenge on thunderclan for exiling him. for hawkfrost, it was convincing ash that it would be a good idea to kill firestar because it would hurt squilf. for firestar, it was having him and the other apprentices work together to kill bone during the battle with bloodclan to avenge whitestorm. this dude was surrounded by people that planted the idea in his head that, in order to get even with people who hurt you, *you* should hurt or even kill them. it doesnt matter if people say that at the end of the day he was responsible for his decisions. the influence the people in your life have on you DOES matter. the way he was written in TBC really feels to me like the erins saw people sympathizing for him and went “no! you cant feel bad for him, hes supposed to be a bad guy!!” so they totally just doubled down and made him illogically evil in that arc. it didnt even make sense, considering he got into starclan-which is important considering that, according to actual starclan lore, they CAN, in fact, pretty much read your mind/emotions: an example being them sending frecklewish to literal hell because they somehow knew she died holding a grudge. they meant it when they said he “loved too much”, because they could literally read his thoughts and motivations. also, when hollyleaf died and spoke with squilf as a spirit, she said that she and ash had no bad blood between them anymore. i absolutely feel that the ashfur in this map is the way he was truly meant to be.
I love how you start off by saying that he isn't some "unstable lunatic incel" and then you go on to tell us how unstable he is. And honestly, Its not hard to think that he's some lunatic. Ashfur could not accept rejection and responded to it by helping plot the murder of Squirrelflight’s father. He also tried to kill three cats who had no say in who their parents were, just to make Squirrelflight suffer. Not even Bramblestar who ‘stole her’ from him. No, he wanted Squirrelflight to be his or to be miserable. That’s not love, that’s an obsession. And then, of course, just all of The Broken Code. Not to mention Ashfur basically wanted to control her to be his, he fights her own battles and problems when she is capable of herself. He quite literally was prepared to kill her family over her rejection. I can’t possibly imagine what he’d be prepared to do over a simple argument or short break-up.
This song was great for him and the art was great everyone! Really held all the emotion well. I like Ashfur as a character. So lonely, so tragic and trying so hard for love and to be seen. Just for the woman he loved to reject him in one single day and come back with kits like two months later. He probably thought she played him like a game. Leaf x Crow had already spent time by the time Squirrel chooses Bramble. Which means she sure as heck had Bramble’s kits suspiciously quickly. Or WHILE She “pretended” to love Ashfur. He had to see it that way
She didn't rejected him in one single day, tho. And he wasn't lonely, he had his siblings and some pals, like Thornclaw and Spiderleg. If he decided to drown on a relationship that was long over during a whole year, that's his problem, not Squirrelflight's.
She never pretended to love Ashfur at all either..that’s kinda pushing it far But otherwise, it’s okay for Ashfur to feel rejection and grief. And some parts I definitely agree with you on!
The way the Squirrelflight spirit stood there made me think that this might be an AU where Hollyleaf tries to kill Ashfur, but fails, and he in turn kills Hollyleaf. Having seen this Squirrelflight comes in and kills Ashfur as revenge for her daughter's death.

He also tried to kill three cats who had no say in who their parents were, just to make Squirrelflight suffer. Not even Bramblestar who ‘stole her’ from him. No, he wanted Squirrelflight to be his or to be miserable. That’s not love, that’s an obsession. And then, of course, just all of The Broken Code.
Not to mention Ashfur basically wanted to control her to be his, he fights her own battles and problems when she is capable of herself.
He quite literally was prepared to kill her family over her rejection. I can’t possibly imagine what he’d be prepared to do over a simple argument or short break-up.

This song was great for him and the art was great everyone! Really held all the emotion well. I like Ashfur as a character. So lonely, so tragic and trying so hard for love and to be seen.
Just for the woman he loved to reject him in one single day and come back with kits like two months later. He probably thought she played him like a game. Leaf x Crow had already spent time by the time Squirrel chooses Bramble. Which means she sure as heck had Bramble’s kits suspiciously quickly. Or WHILE She “pretended” to love Ashfur. He had to see it that way
She didn't rejected him in one single day, tho. And he wasn't lonely, he had his siblings and some pals, like Thornclaw and Spiderleg.
If he decided to drown on a relationship that was long over during a whole year, that's his problem, not Squirrelflight's.

The way the Squirrelflight spirit stood there made me think that this might be an AU where Hollyleaf tries to kill Ashfur, but fails, and he in turn kills Hollyleaf. Having seen this Squirrelflight comes in and kills Ashfur as revenge for her daughter's death.
