Growing up in a fishing village on the lower Potomac River meant that I had access to a bounty of marine mechanics and their decades of experience. The captain of the crab boat I crewed for four years did most of his own maintenance and repair. My best friend’s grandfather owned and ran a small marina. I spent a lot of my free time helping and learning about every aspect of work and pleasure boats.
So much of what I learned in those formative years has been useful and the best thing I got from that time was a passion to understand systems of all types.
Those old, cranky men helped to shape my whole adult life.

Very inspiring hearing your story about learning motors early on.
I’m actually ready to tear into my old lawn sitting in garage to wrap my head around motor.
I’m not sure if I have an assembly manual sitting around, may have to look it up online.

Pictures. Take lots of pictures as you take it apart. Reassembly will be a lot easier. I will lay out the pieces to include bolts, nuts, and screws for each system and take pictures. Then I bag the parts and label them.

Great video. Been wanting to learn how outboard engines work. You have given me great ideas to get started. I wish someone would put together an online course for the DIYer.

@@LocalVideoAdvantage I am working on that. In the meantime do you have an outboard I can help you with? If not I can help you find a good one and know what to look for. Where are you located?

@@OutboardDad I don't have one yet. I have been looking on FB marketplace. I live in Punta Gorda, FL. It would be great if you could help me find one. I almost pulled the trigger on a few but was not sure that I was getting a good deal. I need to learn how to identify a good deal. Maybe you could make a video about that.
