❣DIY Fairy House Using Jars❣

- Hi, in this video I show you how you can make a fairy house using some of your old jars. I always save the ones with unusual shape that inspire me. This isn't a follow along project, because you might not have these exact jars laying around, but it's a proof of concept, something to get you started with your own jars and bottles. The way I start such a project is by selecting a few jars and play with them until I have an interesting shape, not too symmetrical, with a variety of thicknesses and heights. The next step is to glue them in place using hot glue. I know hot glue doesn't bind them together but it will hold them enough time for me to finish with the first layer of paper clay. I created some volume at the roofs using cardboard from pizza boxes. These cardboard shapes don't need to be perfect as we will cover them in clay. Next step is of course adding the first layer of paper clay. If you're new here, the clay I usually use is "Das modelling material" because it has dimensional stability when it dries, which means it doesn't shrink like a regular clay so it won't develop cracks around the jars. When adding this first layer you must decide where the windows will be and cut them out while the clay is still wet. You may try to smooth this first layer as good as you can, I used some water for that. Don't get greedy with the first layer! Don't try to finish the whole house because you will end up with irregular shapes and bumps all over the surface that will need more time to fix. Just cover the whole surface, cut out the windows and smooth the surface as good as you can. When the clay is dried it's time to make the details. I added roof tiles, wooden beams, window frames, door frame, rocks at the bottom of the house and that's about it. For the coloring part I used watercolors that come in tubes. The technique I used this time is different. I started with the light colors first, taking advantage of the white of the clay to get some beautiful colors. Then I added very diluted darker colors for the shadows, corners and textures. That's basically it. The two tower jars can be used as storage compartments for keys, money, jewelry and at the bottom you can easily add lights and make it a night lamp. The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question
5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations?
I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay

My granddaughter and I tried this. They turned out great! Thanks for the inspiration! I bought air dry clay for my granddaughter to use and I used salt dough. Both ways were fine. I have salt dough Christmas ornaments that I made 35 years ago and they still look like new. My favorite part of making the house was painting it! 😊

@@stepanrubcov219 судя по серому цвету, это, скорее всего, одна из разновидностей папье-маше или структурная паста с содержанием шпатлёвки. Папье-маше можно сделать с содержанием клея, ПВА в том числе, тогда масса липнет на поверхность, она хорошо принимает любую придаваемую ей текстуру - вид камня или дерева, выбор за вами, а далее остаётся дождаться высыхания. По высыхании образуется достаточно прочный слой, который можно в дальнейшем обрабатывать: зашкуривать, выравнивать, раскрашивать. Поищите, забейте в поисковой строке различные рецепты этих масс.
Есть очень интересные и простые составы, вам понравится.)) Например, у мастера Сергеича.

I stumbled across this channel by accident. I am so glad I did. I have always enjoyed building scale models as a pass time but I do get burnt out after a time. I feel that this may be a good transition into something that will allow me to use many of the tools I already have. Moreover, I think this is something my wife would enjoy doing with me!
