Imagine your reaction multiplied by thousands watching Robin play that guitar live. I looked around and everyone was just sitting there with their mouths wide open. I was still in high school in the 70s. It was pure perfection. You also have to give it up to band, they are a trio. That is a boatload of music coming off that stage. I remember the first time I heard that song sitting in the parking lot at high school and one of my friends saying you gotta here this song. It still gives me chills.
I would be sitting in a bar watching him work his magic, and constantly thinking what in hell is he doing here. Great guitarist from the late 60s, and early 70s. So many great guitarists came out of that first wave of British rock and roll. God bless Robin Trower. "Day of the Eagle" is another fan favorite by Trower
Absolutely! Watching Robin Trower do his thing in a bar is like, "How did we get so lucky?" The late '60s and early '70s were like a golden era for guitar legends. Bless Robin Trower for adding his magic to the mix. "Day of the Eagle" is just one of those tracks that hits you right in the feels. Good times, good music, cheers to that! 🍻🎸
This song is about a bridge in Venice where the jail was on 1 side of the canal and the executions held on the other. A small covered bridge had to be crossed. Why he isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame escapes me. James Dewar was the bass/vocals is also exceptional and one of the best. RIP Saw Robin 5 times in Detroit known as the King of the Strat!!!! Listen to this full album was one of the best of the 70's
Robin and Jimmy... a classic pairing. "Bridge of Sighs" is in my truck CD player right now. What a great release this was. Thank you B & C ! Yes, this a haunting tune.
That's awesome. I found out about Robin from a college station that had Saturday night albums that weren't played on the rock stations. There were so many artists back then who had talent. We lived during the best time of music. If people today only knew. I'm glad some are listening and finding out.
Almost.... as I explianed to Stevie Ray Vaughn when he was chatting with me at the old Terrace Bar in Oakland before SRV's gig in Berkeley... I explained to SRV that RT is my favorite guitarist because when Trower plays, it's like he's playing for God... and everyone else in the audience was just lucky to be in the room.... ya shoulda seen the ear-to-ear grin come across SRV's face... one of my best bartending memories ever! 😎👍❤️🙏
A great song by Robin. The Robin Trower Band was great to see live in the '70's and '80's.Robin is still making great music and is doing concerts this year in England.Daydream is another song you will like a lot.Really no bad songs by Robin. The voice of the late James Dewar was also great. Thanks for this one.
Jimmy Dewar was bass player with Stone the Crows so he was a great singer in a band fronted by a great singer in Maggie Bell. I saw Frankie Miller in a local pub and Jimmy was playing bass and singing in his band. Two fantastic vocalists for the price of a beer.
This is what we called acid rock or psychedelic rock back in the day (70s). Something that we got stoned on and Trower was one of the best. I saw Trower in a small club in the 90s and he sent us back to the 70s in our minds, he sounded exactly the same. With the singer sounding so much like James Dewar, it was such an amazing addition.
The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge in Venice, Italy, over the canal which led prisoners to their fate which was the prison on the other side. Robin Trower is an amazing guitarist who has been performing since 1962. Scotsman James Dewar, plays bass and provides great vocals.
Ah, cool tidbit about the Bridge of Sighs in Venice! Adds some depth to the name. And Robin Trower, been at it since '62? That's some serious dedication. James Dewar bringing in the bass and killer vocals sounds like a solid combo. Gotta give them a spin!
Oh, for sure! Robin Trower and James Dewar are like the dynamic duo of good tunes. It's one of those combos that just hits differently, you know? Glad you're on board for the ride.
Robin pulls you in. There were so many artists back then who made you amazed at their incredible talent. Some received a lot of airtime and too many didn't. Robin didn't get his fair share. I was fortunate to live back then for it. I never thought it would end, but it did.
Robin Trower is a British rock/blues player who had reg on drums, and The great scottish bass Player/vocalist James Dewar... alot of Jimmi Hendrix influencem but his own style and tone set him apart.. He is and was one of my favorite growing up in the southern California surfer culture doing the 70"s from San Diego all the way up to the bay area In SF, Robin hit all the clubs..
This whole entire album is good man you guys need to listen to day of the eagle that's the centerpiece of this album seriously 🔥👍🥁💯 Robin trower is the guitar player James is the singer for the band and the drummer Reggie Isidore

I think you have to hear the album version...all those songs are great. These live versions are cool and all, but they're not what people heard first, or got radio airplay. They're great for historical interest, but no one saw these back in the day.
This is a must own album from The Classic Era. The whole record captures what Trower’s vibe was all about. Try, “Two Rolling Stoned” and “Day Of The Eagle,” in which both have a similarly sublime 2nd half jam through the fade outro like no other. I floated under the Bridge of Sighs in Venice some 40 yrs ago located within sight of The Grand Lagoon at sunset. The covered bridge with a single window, (which was closed to light when I saw it) was the last view of freedom convicted prisoners would see while being escorted from the Court on one side, to the prison at the other. Thus a sigh of resignation knowing that this may have been your last view of the outside. A visual experience still vivid to me today. Great seeing new fans of Robin’s music, all these yrs later. (And Robin is still out there blowing audiences away) 🤘😎
Got it! Haven't caught "Two Rolling Stoned" and "Day Of The Eagle" yet, but your hype has me all set to dive in. Your Venice Bridge of Sighs story hits home - imagining that last glimpse of freedom. It's wild how Robin Trower's tunes still hit the spot for new fans. Excited to give those tracks a spin and join the party! 🎸🤘
He put out a very cool live LP around the same time, very Hendrix like. His other famous solo song, _Day of the eagle,_ is definitely worth checking out. I would also suggest giving a listen to the 1st famous band Robin was in, Procol Harum. Especially their big hit ; _A Whiter Shade Of Pale._ (but it's not like his solo stuff)
Cool, thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely check out that live LP, Hendrix vibes sound promising. And "Day of the Eagle" - got it on the playlist now. Also, Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" - classic. Always up for discovering new tunes, appreciate the recommendations! 🎶✨
I was introduced to Robin Trower's music by a guy and his sister in the outskirts of Louisville Kentucky ( Nick and Tammy Kreger ) who said they knew Robin Trower personally . Nick was a cool easy going guy and I really had no reason to doubt him . The next day he brought some pictures to school and sure enough he , his Dad and his sister were sitting in their house with Robin Trower . Bridge of Sighs is a GREAT ALBUM and you really should have been introduced to " Day of the Eagle " first which is faster and more the feel of the album . The album ebbs and flows absolutely blows your mind . I had a really amazing year 2003 I believe ( getting older ) and I saw Eric Clapton then Jeff Beck and finally Robin Trower ! All in different halls it WAS AMAZING ! All three were incredible and Eric Clapton was with Roger Daltrey ( The Who ) for an opener , Jeff Beck with Montey Montgomery ( INCREDIBLE MUSICIAN ) and finally Robin Trower at the very Famous Cains Ballroom that has presented major stars including The Sex Pistols ! He was in top form and had changed his style to a slightly slower more bluesy sound . I COULD NOT BELIEVE seeing all three of those guys in one year ... it was a guitar fans DREAM come true ! PK
Wow, PK, that sounds like an epic journey into the world of Robin Trower! It's wild how you got introduced by Nick and Tammy, and then to see the photos the next day - talk about solid proof. "Day of the Eagle" being the first taste, I get it, that track is a whole vibe. And dude, your 2003 sounds like a guitar lover's paradise! Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Robin Trower all in one year? That's like hitting the jackpot. The fact that each had their own flavor, especially Trower with that bluesy twist, must've been mind-blowing. And at Cains Ballroom, no less - that place has some serious history. Thanks for sharing that awesome trip down memory lane. Any other gigs that left a mark on you like those did? Always love hearing about those unforgettable concert experiences!
The Bridge of Sighs in Venice, The Ponte Dei Sospiri, led from the prison to the place of execution. As you would expect pf any man walking to his death his breathing would come in gasps, hence Bridge of Sighs. The bridge itself crosses the Rio de Palazzo, and is a covered bridge to prevent prisoners escaping by jumping in the canal. Trower, as you can tell by his guitar style, was a devotee of Jimi Hendrix. Check out his tribute to Hendrix, "Daydream". It is written in the style of Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary", and is exceptionally beautiful.
I crossed that bridge once and of course, having seen Robin T. twice in concert, had the song in my head. On a side note, not all prisoners who crossed the bridge were executed. Giacomo Casanova was jailed there, which was a bit difficult for him because he was really tall and the ceilings in the jail are quite low. But he did escape.
This live recording is pretty thin and murky. You should check out the studio version, because Trower's guitar tone is huge and one of one, and James Dewar, the singer, has a beautiful full soulful voice. One of the best blues rock singers of the 70's. The album was also called Bridge of Sighs, it was his huge iconic hit album. Other great songs from it were Day of the Eagle, Too Rolling Stoned, In This Place, Little Bit of Sympathy. Too Rolling Stoned got airplay back in the day. Trower still closes his shows w/ Little Bit of Sympathy.

Often referred to as "The White Hendrix", Robin was first in a line of Jimi Hendrix successors, after Jimi's untimely death.
That makes alot of sense.
