    I really understood your explanation, and tbh this lesson really complicates me but since I've viewed your video, I'm really confident enough to answer my math exam. Just subscribed and I hope to see more helpful videos. Thank youu!! 😭💚

    What does Isolate the variable mean?

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  3 года назад +6

      You want the variable or what you are solving for on one side by itself. This is so you can say x is equal to this.
      x = some number
      Let me give you an example.
      2x + 3 = 5
      You want to solve for x, which means we want to isolate x. This will end up as x = some number
      2x + 3 = 5
      To get x by itself, you will just do the opposite of what's being done to x. First we have 3 that is added to 2x, we can get rid of that by subtracting 3 away from each side.
      Subtract 3 away from both sides:
      2x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3
      2x = 2
      Now, we have 2 that is multiplying x, we can get rid of that by dividing both sides by 2.
      Divide both sides by 2:
      2x/2 = 2/2
      x = 1
      Now x is isolated and we have a solution. x is equal to 1, so if we plug a 1 in for x in the original equation the left and right sides will be equal.
      2(1) + 3 = 5
      2 + 3 = 5
      5 = 5

    Why cancel the 5 in 4:38?

    • @Greenemath
      @Greenemath  2 года назад

      You are trying to isolate the variable x. Since you have x/5, we multiply both sides by 5. Now you have x by itself.

      @ZachSwanson-tn4cr We are multiplying 5 by 1/5, which is 1.
