- South Africa's current fear is a national grid collapse. In this video we discuss scenarios and potential issues with the specific purpose of planning around issues to lessen the impact of a national grid collapse.
Thank you, very very informative and much needed info
My pleasure!
I know you said you weren't trying to scare anyone, I'm scared witless! In case of grid collapse, is it better to be in the city or in the outskirts?
Please channel your fear into action. Make some goals and plans, then start working towards them. That will cure you.
It’s better to be where your support is.
Being a refugee/stray in an unknown area is you absolute worst option.
Thank you for the video. One thing I do is can. Meat and produce goes into the canner. You can do this with anything from water to meat.
Absolutely correct, learning basic skills is so important.
I already waterbath can chicken and mince when I realize that I am not going to cook it in time, to keep it from spoiling. Then it can stay in the fridge for a year. If it is stored in a cool cupboard, we use it within 2 - 3 weeks, as I can't maintain 10°C or below.
@Olivia de Bruin Where in South Africa did you buy your pressure canner?
We can water bath can the content of our freezer and use it up immediately over the next few days/weeks, keeping it as cool as possible.
Perfect idea. It's always best to know the process before it's required.
Great, Thanks. Please give a link for Craig, sounds a useful guy...
Craig and his team are at www.thequartermaster.co.za
please share details of the experts if you don't mind. I need water storage system
Have a look at www.thequartermaster.co.za they are our preferred supplier.
For bulk water storage, a JoJo tank is your answer.
Thank you!
Absolutely my pleasure!
Thanks, that's very informative. What 5 foods would you plant to survive for 6 weeks?
Go heavy on root and leaf crops.
Are the small summer carrots and beets also applicable here? Would they be ready before the large ones?
"The insurer will pay [for the damage]". No they won't - insurers are already preparing towards not accepting claims; and, unless specified in your contract, insurers don't cover for riots and war.
Correct, up until a few weeks ago SASRIA would have covered riots. Even they are backing out of a grid collapse event.
@@LivingseedsFarm They are covering themselves, because it's clear that the claims will pour down like ice in a hail storm. I wouldn't be surprised if also medical aids will deny health claims should clients get injured due to unrest and riots.
what about water if you stay in a complex
1) Have a way to store water.
2) Look at a water filter to use the complex pool water if it has one.
3) make a plan for an alternate supply that is in walking distance.
4) only use water for cooking and drinking.
Your geyser is also something you can tap into.
If you don't fill up your freezer monthly with food start filling bottles of water and freezing them. When the electricity goes down the frozen water will keep your frozen food colder for longer and when it finally defrosts you have fresh water. Save the cold water that comes out of your hot water tap. You can buy 25L buckets with lids to save water in. Use and replenish any stored water. Tuck water storage away in unused corners of kitchen/bathroom/garage etc.....
How do we take care of our pets? My dogs are on a raw diet, so no pellets.
Live prey animals would be the way to go if you can. Chickens and rabbits would probably be better in a suburban area. Chickens you would need to go for a quieter breed and no roosters. And stock up on dry feed for your livestock so you can keep them fed until it is time for them to become dog food.
I’ll go with Conrad on this.
Another option is it should only be for a few weeks. Dry dog food is better than them starving.
Thank you. They have a chicken allergy. :-( but I could definitely keep the rabbit as an option.
@@AniaDomagala Mielie meal cooked with veg and powdered stock for taste. Cook in a potjie over a fire.
Dogs with skin sensitivities would probably not be able to eat mealie meal. Rather go for rice.
Insurance companies will never handle the enormity of paying out claims. One can understand that fully. One understand their position but why were they happy to sign you up for it and now that we need it they won't pay out? Then why don't they refund us the portion that we paid for this cover over the years? Guess that tracing people could be a problem but I.just wonder about. When we paid it, it was tacitly implied that we would be covered. Guess once again we the loosers.
This is a very good point.
sound quality is bad
Sorry to hear that.
Thank you!!
My pleasure!
