The irony is, if the Kaiser had been allowed to keep his throne - he would *NOT* have given Hitler the emergency powers that Hindenburg did after the Reichstag fire thus making him (Hitler) absolute ruler.

Umm no. Know your history, FFS. The Kaiser greatly supported AH, even after he reneged on their deal to reinstate the Prussian (German) Monarchy after the war. The British, however, who already made several Pacts with the Nazis by this point, were infuriated that the Monarchy would be permanently obliterated by the Third Reich… but over 100 British Royals were already top Officers and Financiers of Nazi Germany. Plus King Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor) was sabotaging his own military, counting the days ‘til his best buds could invade and make their alliance “official.”
Anyways, ultimately, the British did what the British do, and tried to “rescue” yet another monster to add him to their collection of “foreign opposition leaders” to cry on radio broadcast to their countries about how they’re still in charge, or whatever. Kaiser Wilhelm II was first cousins with Tsar Nicholas II and King George V - the belligerents of WWI… all in the family. Both world wars were family feuds between the royals of the same Dutch-British bloodline, who made it a point not to “breed” with the locals over the countries they reigned - but mostly by proxy, and with a lot of genocide of those the royals have ALWAYS scapegoated to their personal benefit.
Meanwhile, AH was a pedo who murdered his 16-year old niece & “lover” - just like literally every Nazi then and now. It’s hilarious the British keep putting out revisionist WWII films, and RUclips comments, tho! Tell me, how is she a “maid” (or member of the “staff,” as the gentle SS fellow called her), when she’s NOT GETTING PAID nor ALLOWED TO LEAVE?? In English, the word for that is: SLAVE. She’s a slave. But, to make sure this lil movie doesn’t look super r-wordy, because lots of Nazis did r-word (RUclips censorship) Jewish slaves, they made the character initiate sex… and do so in a very dominant commanding way - as-if she was somehow “empowered” by sleeping with the ENEMY. Also, portraying her in a clean little uniform, with perfect clean skin & hair (not even actual maids stay clean, given they’re cleaning and all), not one bit bothered by anything or anyone, not even tired despite being the only SLAVE maid of that entire compound, more concerned with this basic looking Fritz than her life, with “soft hands” that are nothing but a dogwhistle saying “see, Jews were the ones with money.”
Right, because maids, real ones who are PAID and not SLAVES, have calloused hands from all that dusting and vacuuming… and a King would even be aware of such a thing as callouses when they don’t make a habit of touching hands with the peasants.
This was post-Industrial Revolution, only hard laborers had wear and tear on their hands in the 1930s & 40s… and most women weren’t allowed to vote, let alone work at that time! And Jews had been trapped in ghettos for centuries in most major European cities until the walls finally fell in the west only 30 yrs before the Holocaust began - so it’s not like they could go out and get a job as a blacksmith in the village!!
Could the Brits be anymore offensive and out of touch with reality?? A24 may be the Distributor, but the production companies are all British except for one present day company that’s laundered it’s name, given it was founded under the Reich. You’re watching a Nazi fetish fantasy. The Kaiser was only banished to the Swiss Alps once AH got sick of his constant craving for attention and wanting a high position in the Reich. AH was also harboring resentments as a WWI vet, albeit, he was Austrian and volunteered to join so he could weasel his way into obtaining German citizenship. Never once was the Kaiser an enemy of the Reich, but he was always a friend of the British Empire. There’s some HISTORY for you people!

It's proper to refer to as king. The empire of germany is gone. The title of Emperor of Germany was destroyed. The only thing remaining in the hohenzollern's hands was the title of Prussia. Which Wilhelm used to be the king of prussia. and which is why the current head of hohenzollern is prince, not "emperor"

    • @Kaiser_Wilhelm_IV.
      @Kaiser_Wilhelm_IV. 6 лет назад +10

Well if it is about the succession of the position of the Kaiser, the title was also (crown-)prince. And Wilhelm II.'s oldest (living) grandson Louis Ferdinand was still supposed to be called his imperial highness, even in the time of the Federal Republic (when both the German Kaiserreich and the state of Prussia were not existing anymore). Though it is true that he was ALSO a king, not just an emperor, Luuk is completely right here, Wilhelm should be called (and actually WAS called) emperor, not king.

The synopsis from the IMDB: «A German soldier tries to determine if the Dutch resistance has planted a spy to infiltrate the home of Kaiser Wilhelm in Holland during the onset of World War II, but falls for a young Jewish Dutch woman during his investigation.»
    LOL
Who in the Resistance was interested in the former Emperor? British spies also didn't try to kidnap him because it was completely useless. He was withdrawn from German politics and the Nazi party never tried to restore the monarchy. Führer didn't like Wilhelm and called him «old fool». German forces after the occupation of Netherlands virtually arrested Wilhelm and kept him under the guard because they prevented him in any attempt to come back to Germany. Hitler didn't need a rival even such an old and weak as the former Kaiser.

This feels odd coming from A24. They've almost always gotten me at the very least interested in an upcoming release and the films all look like they are well crafted and offer something new to bring to the table.
This trailer feels like it could have come from any studio and the film itself looks like a dull period piece love story. Not to mention the casting of Jai Courtney as a romantic lead? I don't hate the guy but I have hardly ever seen him provide charisma on screen and have little faith in him convincing me on a romance. This is the first time I've been skeptical and disinterested from A24, but I hope my first assumptions are proven wrong.

He failed to bring the French out of revanchism, he failed with Kulturkampf, stoking catholic German resentment, he failed to either gain the support of or curtail the socialists, creating a permanent opposition, he failed to gain Germany friends, only having Austria-Hungary as an ally.
He managed to unite Germany, and he understood nationalism. When that was out of the way, he failed at every thing he tries, including managing Wilhelm II.

The title of Caesar as Emperor morphed out of the cognomen { last name } of Gaivs Ivlivs Caesar, assassinated 44BC. Russia adopted the tile as Czar and the German and Austrian Emperors were Kaisers. A title still holds if the institution is in abeyance - witness Charles, Prince of Wales in 1649. When his father King Charles 1 was murdered by Parliament Charles was in exile and became immediately King Charles 11, thus reigning from 1649, not 1660, until his death in 1685. England never was a republic under Cromwell - it was an abberation under a tyrant , a kingdom with the King in exile.

I'm struck by the fact Wilhelm is addressed as "Highness," which makes sense considering that not only did he abdicate the position of Emperor he also abdicated the position of king of Prussia. Not a king nor emperor, he'd revert to the title of "prince." Hence his being addressed as "Your Highness."
I feel sorry for Kaiser Bill but Bismarck warned him: "Stay on good terms with the British! Don't frighten them, don't anger them, and for the love of God DON'T go to war with them!"

He also harbored antisemitic tendencies and was partly responsible for the outbreak of World War I, which indirectly paved the way for World War II. As the clouds of World War I gathered over Europe, the figure of Wilhelm II, the German Emperor, presents a complex and often misunderstood character in the annals of history. Notably, Wilhelm's personal relationships with his royal cousins in Britain and Russia played a significant role in his attitudes towards the impending conflict. Contrary to the image of a warmonger, there were aspects of Wilhelm's disposition that showed a reluctance to engage in war, especially against his own family.
Wilhelm II was closely related to the major monarchies of Europe. King George V of the United Kingdom and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia were his first cousins. These familial ties were not just symbolic; they reflected a deeply interconnected European royal network. Wilhelm's mother, Victoria, was a British princess, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, making the British king his direct cousin. Similarly, through his father's side and the intermarriages of European royalty, he was related to the Russian Tsar.
In the years leading up to World War I, Europe was a tinderbox of alliances, rivalries, and nationalist fervor. Despite the political tensions, Wilhelm's personal correspondence with his cousins often revealed a different side to the Emperor. He was known to have shared a cordial and affectionate relationship with George V and had a complex but significant connection with Nicholas II.
The outbreak of World War I put Wilhelm in a difficult position. The idea of going to war against countries led by his own family members was a source of personal anguish for him. There is evidence suggesting that Wilhelm, despite his militaristic posturing and the aggressive policies of his government, was initially hesitant about the prospect of a large-scale war. His telegrams and communications around the time reveal attempts to navigate the political crisis with a degree of caution, likely influenced by his family connections.
However, the mechanisms of alliance politics, militarism, and nationalism were far greater than any single individual, even an emperor. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary set off a chain reaction that eventually engulfed all major European powers in war. Despite his reservations, Wilhelm was unable to stop the march toward war, partly due to the momentum of the military-industrial complex and the hawkish elements within his own government.
In retrospect, Wilhelm II's role in the lead-up to World War I illustrates the complex interplay between personal relationships and the inexorable forces of national politics. His reluctance to fight against his cousins adds a poignant, if often overlooked, dimension to the tragedy of the Great War. It underscores the fact that even those who sit on thrones are not always the masters of their destinies, especially in the face of overwhelming historical forces

Not gonna lie, I'm not excited for this movie. A24's other upcoming projects like Menashe, A Ghost Story, and It Comes At Night all look amazing, but this just looks like a very stiff, uninteresting film, and I hate when a movie is set in a foreign country where english is not their first language but they all speak english anyways. I will still watch it though because I love A24, but this trailer doesn't give me hope

People rather watch a movie in a language they know than read through the whole thing. If you want them to speak German just watch the movie with German dub

@@rizzamaeong Because Russia didn’t defeat them… the US did. Molotov-Ribbentrop - secret pact between Soviets & Nazis. They were always on the same side. The Soviet Concentration Camps of Jews didn’t end until the late 1980s FFS. You Russians sure like to repeat history. Soviets were only “Allies” in WWII because the British Empire demanded it, despite the US sacrificing the most soldiers, manufacturing and procuring all the armaments, and financing the many many wars that comprise the Second World War - started by the exact same belligerents as WWI.
Both wars, for the primary belligerents, were in the name of unabated colonizing and land grabbing throughout the entire world, and enriching themselves off by the plundering of invaded nation’s banks, museums, records, armies, military equipment; and the wholesale enslavement and genocide of Jews everywhere to hand some of the largest and most powerful corporations today record-high corporate profits. Blood money.
The only country that truly wanted to beat the Nazis, well, until FDR mysteriously died only 2 months into his 4th term, enabling unelected Truman to “inherit” nearly 4 years of the American presidency (and replace the Morgenthau Plan with the pro-Nazi Marshall Plan) - was the United States, bruh. Period. Most of the deaths in the Red Army were intentional acts of genocide by the Soviets who put Jews on the frontlines without any weapons. Same practice the White Army under the Tsar did. He liked kidnapping Jewish children from poor villages late at night to forcibly recruit into his Army - just like Al Qaeda and ISIS do to Muslim children today.

Very educational. I never knew the Kaiser was Prussian Royalty, I suspected though. Good movie. It jumps right into the plot within half the hour from start. I enjoyed everthing about the movie, the liaison de coeur between the spy and officer, leaves some watchers bitterly angry. Socialist Officiers were there to shut down the German Royalty. With no regard for the Prussian Tribes of their Heritage just contempt for social fascism.
