thanks for this demo. ive got a problem; when i select all surfaces of my model, cut and paste, it comes back as a Solid. I assume is because the structure is water tight and automatically forms a solid. how do i stop this from happening?

You have to be careful about which faces are you selecting. Practice on a rectangle with a hole in the center. Try and get a surface out of it and the you might be able to get the gist of it
