- Words by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Music by Rani Arbo, arr. Peter Amidon
This song was recorded on a smartphone at the end of a video recording day when we, as an ensemble, decided on impulse to sing this one more time together before we parted ways. It has been such a privilege to sing together this year, and we look forward to sharing some other videos with you later this year.

Crossing the Bar
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
Amen
1:19
This is beautiful!
Thank you! It is beautiful and sung like Angels.
Thank you, Dale. I have never read this poem before. There is so much reverberation that I can't understand what the choir is singing. You have answered that question. Be Well.
Like Sacred Harp singing…to stand in the center of those voices would be like hearing the angels sing.
I thought of Sacred Harp singing as well. Beautiful!
So poignant. I too have reached 71 years and I get closer and closer in my relationship with Jesus. I fear not death, dying might be a struggle but not death. I too, will cross the bar to meet my Pilot and, I will do so with grace and joy. May I hear this ringing in my ears when I am crosting the bar. Amen. Chris x
So sad; so poignant. So beautiful. I'm 71 now, and have lost many friends and family. They have "crost the bar." And my tears flow. Than you for this heart-felt farewell.
Just too beautiful for words
The harmony is perfect.
@@curtcaudle5900 The spelling as Tennyson would have it was, indeed, "crost."
@@ljsharman9761 thank you for the correction
I should probably read more Tennyson
We don't know eachother, we never met and never will, but I send you a big warm hearted hug from Germany ❤
Darling friend, I am 65 and you're telling my story. For me, they're all gone, making me a member of the "Last One Standing" club. I think we're all meant to look after each other when our folks and so many others have traveled ahead without us, so I hope you are not alone today. My friends generally step up to the plate on holidays and today is no different. I'll keep a good thought for you.
The fact that humans are able to sing is evidence of the kindness of God. Such a gift. And so beautifully celebrated here. Sublime.
Humans are able to kill and torture too. Surely that's also on God's balance sheet... or are you being selective in what you ascribe to the divine?
Beauty is the evidence of God, murder and cruelty is evidence of man's sin and evil ..that's as I understand it.@@ecoworrier
Sad song for those who don’t know Christ as their personal Lord and Savior! Crossing the Bar is a glorious event for those who know HIM! We don’t sorrow as those who don’t know Him!
This is so beautiful. It is so powerful, this circle of held hands and blended voices. God surely delights in this.
Beautiful words and harmonies performed by gifted singers. Magnificent acoustics in that church, too! 💜🙏
Seldom have I heard anything as beautiful and moving as this musical version of Tennyson's emotive poem.
Sublime. Much better than hip hop.
I have always loved acapella music, what ever form it may take....and this is simply FANTASTIC!!! Great Job, Folks....Keep up the good work!!! 😍😍😍😍🤗🤗🤗🤗😇😇😇😇👍👍👍👍
Soothes my heart, especially because of the horrors of the Israeli war now🙏❤️✝️Pray for all people to return to God Almighty.
I felt blessed for all 3 minutes and 45 second. God bless you.
Gorgeous sounds. Heaven calling.
So so so beautiful and inspiring lovely harmony, many thanks, God bless you.
This poem was printed on the memorial leaflet when my great-uncle Robert died. It has always had special meaning for me; that meaning is so much more beautiful now, set to music
A lovely rendition so beautifully gifted to us by this ensemble. Thanks to all of you for your dedication to vocal mastery.
A beautiful setting of this inspiring poem by Lord Tennyson (the music previously unknown to me), in a lovely interpretation by this sensitive ensemble. Thanks !
Other worldly in beauty....................
This is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes! I would love to be standing right in the middle of that circle.
Simply angelic..God will not judge by which church a person went to. But by their hearts...that was a dream I had many years ago...mormons. Mennonite baptists matters not to god..he searches the hearts....a bible verse
I believe that these words were used at the funeral service of Andy, (Service Desk, Air New Zealand). A good Aussie bloke. It was a pleasure to have known him. Tango Whisky.
THIS , IS A HOLY THING , , TODAH RABAH TO ALMIGHTY GOD FOR HIS SERVANTS . , I HAVE BEEN BLESSED , INDEED , ❤
This is the loveliest version of this beautiful poem-song.
My choir which no longer is able to meet used to sing this and I was delighted to sing ot once again with your lovely voices Thankyou
I went to a Mennonite school. Choir was always a big deal. When we occasionally sang hymns in chapel the choir kids would sing harmony. It was my favorite part of Chapel.
Beautifully sung in a room perfect for it. Just the right amount of reverberation to enhance the singing.
Dan, totally agree. I might also add, perfect balance; not too much alto or bass!! Most excellently well done!!! And they were spot on with pitch!!!!! WOW!!
I have watched other clips here on RUclips and they are just as excellent; not in a perfect room for singing.
Beautiful singing showing devotion to God. I have sung this in my local choir here in Cardiff, Wales UK. Thank you so much ❤
Thanks for a most sublime worship shared.
A few years before my mother's passing, she and I were talking about her experiences as a child. The subject got around to poetry. For some reason I still don't know, I asked her what her favorite poem was. She said "Crossing The Bar". And because of her age, she knew death was not far off. WOW. She was the real thing.
Heavenly singing in what was once a Catholic Church. Laudate Dominum in sanctis eius.
So beautiful! Such a beautiful music, so beautifully sung.
So wonderful to sing in a circle, hand in hand.
It makes me longing for my singing days, but they are over now.
This is a gorgeous song, and they sing it beautifully.
BEAUTIFUL
How beautiful there voices and there presence!
Nothing morę beautiful than choir singing - people tuning to each other in harmony.
Thank you for such beautiful music. The harmonies superb, the egos absent, just as I would expect from people of simplicity. God bless x
Absolutely gorgeous blend of voices here!🎵🎶☺🙏
Such a great harmony. Thank you 💙
beautiful!!
Truly beautiful ~ such a glorious blend of perfectly pitched voices. I must do more research and I would love to suggest this to our choir here in Brittany in the hope that we could, perhaps, come just a little way to such perfection 🙏 thank you 🙏
well done..what a blessing... thank you
Thank you for sharing your beautiful singing and a sense of serenity. As I listen, I'm thinking of three people I love, who have "crossed over".
Just beautiful. Praise God!!!
Дякую за благоговійний спів, прославляючий Бога!
This was written on my maternal grandmother’s tombstone.
Good acoustics is immediately rewarding for both the singer and the listener.
I had to let this one loop for a while. 🤔😢
Beautiful performance. Thank you,all.
Wunderbar!!! Danke aus der Schweiz
Thank you. Beautifully done.
Oh my gosh!! This is beautiful. And I can sense the Love of God......
So beautiful. My favorite poet and poem.. My mother had Crossing the Bar put on my grandmothers headstone...
Beautiful ❤️
Exquisite! Thank you for the spur of the moment decision to record it.
Amazing beautiful sound!
Such stunning harmony. And that last unison note gave me chills. Absolutely beautiful.
Myron did a great job with that smartphone.
That sounded beautiful!
Still looping.
Here with this song is the difference between good and excellent.
Vielen Dank.
So very beautiful; thank you.
Engelsstimmen, wunderschön gesungen
This is the most beautiful singing I have ever heard. I can't stop listening to it.
A beautiful setting of one of my favorite poems, sung masterfully in a room with absolutely glorious acoustics. Thank you!
Wow guys! Beautiful!
Shouldn’t you be working? 😜
Probably 😆@@jolynngingerich7082
Thanks Kenny! It was good singing with you years past! Let's do it again sometime ;)
Even though longer time presented this awesome hymn, what a beautiful performance by your voices. The glory for our Lord Jesus is hearable and takes us a moment to heaven. Very well done ❤. God bless you from Switzerland 🇨🇭
This was recorded at The Arches in Coatesville, PA.
Just so special. A Sunday afternoon treat from God's people. 💟
This is the way.
Wunderschön! Danke!
Beautiful beyond description.
Spellbinding! So beautiful!
Love this gorgeous song beautifully presented.
touches heart, soul and spirit! Thank you!
So powerfully sung.
Sublime ☺️✨✨✨✨
Holy, Holy, Holy
Beautiful
Simply . . . magnificent.
Sung with meaning 🙏🏻
Lovely voices!vI appreciate the modest dress and the headcovering worn by the Mennonite women. Though the headcovering is only commanded for married women while in church as the angels watch the service as 1 Corinthians 11 explains.
God desires distinctions among His children. Men and women are called to present differentials. Married women are to wear something on their head and men do not at church. It reveals submission to one’s husband. Most men obey this passage and do not wear anything on their head during church. One knows this is addressing the church body as men can wear protective head attire outside the assembly. We are also taught, men are to have short hair and women long and most Christian men obey this command so there are distinctions.
We sat in the same restaurant where many Mennonites were seated and all the women wore a headcovering and this is not a sin, though we only see it necessitated during the church service in the Scriptures. I did find it odd that the Mennonite men were trying on hats in the store area and one had a hat on at the meal. It makes me wonder if they truly have studied 1 Corinthians chapter 11 or they just do as they are told, following men’s laws when we are only to obey the Scriptures. We are to be Bereans making sure all that is taught in a church is found in the Bible and not laws composed by men. We are to study to show ourselves approved.
Is it not odd that the women always wear the covering, when men can wear something on their heads away from a fellowship of believers.
Can someone explain this to me?
Jesus Christ, the thrill of hope, for a sick, hurting, and weary world-Romans 10:9-10 from the Bible: “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.”
Amen!!!

Well sung. Because of the reverberation, I could not understand the words to an unfamiliar song. The tune and pace of the singing had me thinking that you were singing in Latin. Very moving. Thank you, choir.
Beautiful, I am discovering you from France. God bless you all. Laurent
May God be the glory!
Lovely singing!
The acoustics in that room is wonderful. Beautiful voices.
Glorious
Awesome!! Accapella music singing
by this talented group is simply angelic.
Beautiful. So soothing for the soul.
This is truly lovely. Everything you sing is beautiful and very moving. My husband and I are just now discovering the gift that is the Mennonite people, since we retired to South Carolina (He loves the baking!!). We made our careers as musicians in the Washington, DC area, then the Lord must have led us here. :) Bravo and blessings to you all!
Beautiful rendition of this unique arrangement
Thank you for sharing this has really blessed me!
O wat prachtig
Zingend bidden
Wonderful, as is the simple Protestantism of their church.
So beautiful
Je ne partage pas votre foi mais la qualité vocale de votre choeur est exceptionnelle. Merci pour le partage 😌🙏🕉
❤️ Beautiful
What a blessing that I found these magnificent voices!!
This is so beautiful, thank you!
Four part harmony here takes on a new meaning:
Words, melody, voice, location!
