The CONTROVERSIAL Philosophy of Demon Slayer! (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
In this video I examine the compelling philosophy of Demon Slayer, including the more controversial aspects of this philosophy which makes this series different from most other Shounen.

Can you please make a Dr.Stone Video? :3
Tanjirou reminds me a lot of Kenshiro from Fist Of The North Star, as their most powerful states are them essentially channeling nothingness and focusing rather than looking towards the outcome. They are also similar in other traits, such as they are not aiming to be the best, rather they simply seem fated to be. The main characters; Yoriichi and Kokushibo, you pointed at are also reminiscent of Kenshiro and his older adopted brother Jagi, in which Jagi whished to be better than his younger brother but simply couldn't beat him, even with cheap tactics and shortcuts in a fight. Nice video all in all, love the series, good to see good breakdowns of better Shonen.
I just came to the comment section to say animeuproar is the post place to find anime content I live this channel and would watch this over any other anime reviewer.❤️
Tanjiro is dead
YOU ARE WRONG
Yoriichi is the typical 'Chosen One' Shonen Protagonist & Kokushibo is his Jealous brother, usual Shonen antagonist, like seriously, are you reading the same manga lol
Look at zenitsu his goals as well, it wasn’t to be the strongest he just wanted to become a pillar and pay back his master while he was alive and even after his master dying he doesn’t give up he continues to do his best stoping the demons in front of him
Well, that's pretty much Rock Lee's
blackcover Same!!! U described it perfectly 😭
Zenitsu is probably the most relatable character in Demon Slayer. Tanjiro not so much. He's too kind, too warm, too positive lol. As an audience we probably don't mind that, but if we're going to strictly speak about how relatable a character is Tanjiro (and a whole bunch of other characters in Demon Slayer) fall short. Zenitsu and probably Shinobu is the most relatable characters for me. Inosuke is the embodiment of primal desires so he is easy to relate to as well, but not in the same deep way (unless you read the manga)
It's a shame he's only effective and likeable (in my opinion) when he's unconscious. The constant screaming, crying, whining, and complaining takes every ounce of depth out of him. He has a worthy goal but his spineless, will-lless personality takes value out of his ambition. It's fruitless if he's not constantly making strides in breaking this, and it's often done for empty jokes. I think Zenitsu may have the intention of being a character like this, but his horrible character writing makes this fall short. Of course, this is my opinion and I feel strongly regarding the love for Zenitsu I feel is undeserved, especially involving one's character
@blackcover Thank you for sharing your insight 😊😊! ! I don't hate him, and especially not involving being imperfect. I'm the farthest thing from perfect, and that's the best thing. I just loathe the execution of his character. Nothing wrong with being scared, nothing wrong with not feeling worthy or strong. It's the execution of those flaws as a character that I feel weren't executed well. You can make a character terrified and such without then being so spineless they would hide behind children and scream at literally every little thing. If it was only during serious moments that he coward and fought to muster strength that's ok but it's all the time. And I guess it's a matter of preference but the constant screaming literally almost made me quit the show. For me it isn't always what is trying to be conveyed or down but HOW it is done. I definitely see potential in him but it's just...I can't understand it idk
Demon Slayer makes a point that you cannot always take care of everything on your own. You can be the best of the best, but circumstances may end up testing your limits. Tanjiro, unlike many of his shonen counterparts, appreciates help more than his individual strength. This makes him a more pronounced and well-composed character. I really, really appreciate this quality of Tanjiro.
@Ayushi Kushwaha
This aspect sets Tanjiro and the series apart from other shonen, yet people see another generic shonen in Demon Slayer.
But I'm not dumb, I've paid enough attention to entertainment to know how important aesthetics are... And Demon Slayer has all the aesthetics of a typical shonen.
A knuckle head protagonist with a good heart? Check.
Well animated fights with explosive choreagraphy? Check.
A simple formula that that moves the plot along? Check.
As a writer myself, I find it annoying that people only look at the surface of a work, and don't see the layers underneath, but engh, such is life.
@@DemonicRemption I agree. It is a whole package in itself. The story develops along naturally so does its characters. Many things about Kimetsu no Yaiba serve as a standard. People have only become too obsessed with cancel culture to notice that, though.
@@DemonicRemption The point is, you just don't need a complicated story to create an impact. A simple story with well-written characters and settings would do.
@@ayushikushwaha5276
I wouldn't blame the inability to see Demon Slayer's quality on focusing on Cancel Culture. Cancel Culture is screaming about how popular Demon Slayer and how that's bad because it doesn't preach about feminism, racial, and LGBT equality.
Y'know despite Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and the entire Demon Slayer Corp BEING FREAKING ASIANS! Or how Nezuko, Shinobu, Kanao, Misturu being strong female characters. Nezuko and Kanao having compelling character arcs, or the fact that this massively popular series was written and drawn BY A JAPANESE WOMAN!!! None of that matters because it doesn't preach Cancel Culture's brand of politics.
No, the issue is the fact that Demon Slayer does nothing new. A lot of Demon Slayer's detractors are in their early 30s like me, or are older. They've seen as much anime as I have or more. And they want to see something new from popular media, and when they don't, that's when they complain how lackluster and cliche Demon Slayer is.
I don't have this problem, because I've studied and paid attention to writing structure, so I could improve my own writing skills. As a result I'm able to see what set Demon Slayer apart from it's peers, despite how obvious it is...-_-
@@ayushikushwaha5276
Also this is true, you don't need a complicated story to make an impact. Like I stated, it depends on the execution. And with Demon Slayer, yeah the action and animation is nice, but the appeal lies in the emphasis on relationships and displays of humanity from Tanjiro's empathy to demons to Zenitsu and Inosuke's growth due to their friendship with Tanjiro influences them.
But wait, there's another aspects that works against Demon Slayer, and it's something that is a fault of fandoms of popular media. Fans don't express adequately what makes a series work. I had this problem going into Sword Art Online and Fairy Tail, as I left those series with the same criticisms many have for Demon Slayer, because I wasn't given adequate information about the appeal of those series. The difference here being I understand the appeal of Sword Art and Fairy Tail, as they're nice gateways to anime, but they lack substance.
My point being the general praises for Demon Slayer that outsiders hear are surface level. But again even if the praises was more in depth, detractors wouldn't see it. That's how important aesthetics are, as they make or break a series for people.

Came here to learn about Kimetsu No Yaiba's philosophy, leaving motivated to work harder and just enjoy the process of personal growth. damn. DID NOT EXPECT THAT.
Haha my guy demon slayer greatness can be explained by few and anime uproar is one of them
The author is taking the Fullmetal Alchemist route. Have single main enemy in mind, without any other future final badguys. I wouldn't be surprised if Kimetsu end after Muzan.
Date Masamune yea, and while it would be sad I think that is a good ending. There could be prequels and spinoffs but the author never writes about the future. There probably are a lot of examples...
One was The King’s Avatar (Chinese LN -> Anime + Manga) but basically after MC reached his goal and started a possibly new arc, the author ended it with a thank you note. They specifically said that they won’t ever continue this story and will leave it to the fans, and ended with saying thank you and goodbye to the characters.
I mean yeah I agree... Once Muzan dies nobody will be able to convert more humans into demons so all they'd have to do is some cleanup until the last demon is dead and then whop- gotta disband the demon hunters if there's no more demons
Im glad for it. Show ends, becomes a timeless classic, doesn’t drag on like so many other shonen anime/manga
And both manga have MC that didn't have any desire to be the best, but to get back what have lost; in their case, bring their sibling back to be a normal human...
It does.
When you notice almost everyone in the series have a sibling problem Upper moon 1, Zenitsu, Mist Piller, Wind Piller, and if you count Giyuu with his relationship with Sabito
Sad how Giyuu's sister was killed a day before her marriage (it be like dat 😢).
Zenitsu doesn't have a sibling problem or am I missing something?

I think Demon slayer is different from any other Shounen because Tanjiro JUST want to save her sister instead of becoming the best than the demon slayers.

Holy shit, I wasn't expecting Uproar to actually like, inspire me. He's like a therapist.
Well he learnt all Thia from demon slayer
Is it really 'controversial' though? My understanding of the overall message of Demon Slayer was more that it was providing a rebuttal to the atypical shonen story and characters and instead making its themes about empathy, having goals reasonable or not, and trying to understand what leads to demons becoming what they are. The fights are great, but they aren't what draws me in. I read/watch for the characters. What their motivations are, why they are, who they are, what caused them to fall from grace or attain their power.
I don't find that 'controversial'. I find it refreshing and a far better story to point a younger fan to rather than something like Black Clover or Seven Deadly Sins.
agreed! My friend and I literally had a good hour-long argument about this and you summed it up in a paragraph. 100% agreed.
It's way greater than that demon slayer is complex it's easy to go in but hard to understand and people are like its generic I. Pray for them

Damn this is actually really motivational. Great work, thank you so much, you inspired me.
Anime uproar is the closest being to understand some part of this great manga called demon slayer
It is stated that demon slayer manga is the most misunderstood manga of all time
Nah, there are more misunderstood manga. Demon Slayer has a bunch going for it, but it has mostly bad writting, shallow development, unexplored stuff, underdeveloped or underexplored characters. Yes, it has a lot going for it, but a lot of what it has is also hindered by the lack of proper execution in other parts. A good example is how the manga revolves around relationship, the value of them, and constantly shows us parallels between brother and sister relationships which go wrong and how it can twist a person, but it never explores, deepens or developed the own MC bother-sister relationship besides "Perfect beings who love each other, never fight, never complain, have no dynamic besides love me brother above all and protect me brother above all". The problem with DS is the same as Naruto: It gets people by the feels and it definetly caught prople in the right time to be a generational story, and it divided itself in 2 sides, where you either love it to no end and ignore all flaws, or you hate it strongly and ignore all good stuff. It lacks the middle ground where people can look at it and agree/admit all the glaring flaws it has, but still praise and hold it dear by the "few" things it gets right, and hope the auhtor keeps doing what she does well and improves on what she does badly, so her next series can be even better
Tbh, this helped me with finishing my homework quicker, and also when I'm down I think of Tanjiro saying "Life changes like seasons, it's not always spring, but not always winter either"
i love this channel this channel have helped me find good anime series and mangas
I'm glad!
Thank you you taught me the one thing I needed to hear start moving forward
The thing I like the most abt DS is that good guys don't just win demons that are 10x more powerful then them easily. They have to sacrifice many things(body parts or life) to kill them and it takes more than 1 person to beat a powerful demon. They don't make op human characters who can easily beat those upper moons, even the strongest hashiras and mc needed help cuz at the end of the day they're just humans that try to win supernatural creatures that are way stronger than them.
Something I say to my best friends and they say back to me in hard times "Obsession leads to depression."

I can somewhat relate to stoic philosophy. When I was a teen I wanted to be a baker, but it turned out that I got sick by being in a bakery, realy got to me at the time. After my attempt at becoming a baker, I was in a hospital for a month. After that I found a new goal, rather than focus on the pain of 'failure', today I am almost at my new goal, it feels great.
Can’t believe kokushibo haven’t meet tanjiro I would love to see him react to tanjiro
he wont react a thing y'know. It not like tanjirou related to him.
Colossal Bert tell •3• I think he would considering Tanjiro mark is identical to Sun Bro’s the fact he uses BotS because Koko still couldn’t use the BotS and had to use BotM
He will be shocked to see that Mark how he get that well upper moon 1 will need to study some genes science for that
I'm actually glad you made this video cause, it gave me a piece of mind. I'm so focused on the goal and only excited about the reward. Watching this video and how you explained it, was like you doing Total concentration water breathing Eleventh form ” Dead Calm” 😂😂😂😂 everything around went calm
Another thing to mention aside from the story of Yoriichi and Kokushibo are the events from Mt. Natagumo
The Junior Demon Slayers who approached the mountain and were slaughtered all wanted to kill the demons there not to defend the people the demons were threatening, but to boost their rank.
The demon slayer who attempted to kill Rui and was killed instantly saw Rui as a quick and easy demon kill because he looked like a child. His reward was getting minced. Murata, one of the only non-main characters to survive the event, realized the folly of their mission and tried to escape to fight another day. In essence he realized his current limits and fought to survive so he could keep growing, and was rewarded by being saved in his time of need by Shinobu.
Tanjiro, similarly, was not fighting to gain rank, he was fighting to defend Nezuko as well as his beliefs about family against Rui's corrupted ideals. He didn't have the power to defeat Rui, but was saved by Giyuu, so he could keep on doing his best and eventually overcome his limits.
AU: think of reasons to be happy
Also AU: think of dead people and dead children

Yes demon slayer is a really good show but with every good thing you have people who will trash on and make negative comments but i must say demon slayer is a work of art and i dont think its fair when people say its a copy or its average and predictable its a shounen anime so it follows a genre and that doesn't make it bad or a copy all anime it unique in its own way.
Agree, it pissed me off so much when I hear those clowns kept trashing down Demon Slayer and going on about the story is nothing new or complex and the only good thing about it is the animation, what a load of crap, they are obviously just butt hurt to see it became this successful especially when it's not their favourite they hate on it for no reason.

Yeah
In the Count Down arc when Tanjiro is fighting Muzan, the crow proclaims there’s still like 50+ minutes to sunrise. I remember thinking “damn, that’s like an eternity considering one slip up and you get one-shotted by MJ”. But in the next panel, Tanjiro says something along the lines of “I just have to focus on surviving this moment, and do the same with the next.”
I never forgot that panel, and thinking about hardships as a process taken piece by piece has really pulled me through when I thought otherwise.
Kokoshibo was awesome, and I can't wait to see him on the big screen
Alright I kinda needed to hear this! What a good way to live by.
Oh my gosh, the part at around 15:20, it’s so true when I think about it. I used to play basketball in high school, and there would be times where I’d get a rebound and have multiple defenders around me and just think to myself “just put it back in, hit the corner of the backboard, DONT MISS!” And I’d miss because I wanted to get the put back so badly. But the times where I just went up and caught the ball and tipped it back in without thinking, I almost never missed when I was calm. Same with jump shots, if you’re worried about the defender closing out, you’ll shoot to hard, to straight, no arc, etc. but if you just get the ball and let it fly, and not worry about the defender, your shot mechanics aren’t changed because you’re calm and just going through the motions without worrying about what COULD happen. That’s crazy to think about... I love thinking and talking about things philosophically, I’m gunna sub to your other channel for more videos like this!
Did you forget Yorohichi was born with special advantages. He really didn't have to work for anything. Heck he even managed not to be cursed by the demon slaying mark. I wonder how he would have been without those advantages.

I agree with your premise, the concept of a protagonist having natural ability without the goal of becoming the strongest, but attaining the title of the strongest is rare, but there are some parallels in shonen... a good example might be Hashirama in Naruto... he liked competing and was challenging himself in fights with friends. But never set out to become the strongest. However, his environment, caused the conflict with a rival clans, the toughest and most brutal being that of his friend Madara... Hashirama never set out to be the strongest, but eventually he decided that he wanted to end the unnecessary clan v clan conflicts. Seems very similar to Demon Slayer... where the environment and/or way of life the characters were born into is the real enemy.

Tanjiro and Edward are pretty similar when it comes to their goal, they both are not trying to be the strongest, or be the best when it comes to whatever story are are in. But, are fighting for their younger sibling because they lost everything and have to leave it behind, they fight when needed and are smart. The main character from Vinland saga is great to, as he just wants to avenge for his father's death and has to do it by getting involved in war, he isn't focusing on being the best. Tho unlike him Tanjiro and Edward want to help others and don't want to see people around them get hurt.

also a thing i noticed, when yoriichi says "all those who master their way will end up in the same place" what could it mean? is it related to what has been said in the video?
for me it means that
"all those who master their ways" --> all those who become extremely skilled at their crafts, swordsmen, baker, janitor, even pen spinner
"will end up in the same place" --> will all have something in common
what is that thing ?
for me it could the fact of being extremely skilled without even trying, the "supreme territory", third upper moon talked about in his last fight, so yoriichi had mastered his way (swordsmanship) and ended up at this place
This would be a hopeful message, meaning that we are all naturally very skilled at something that we maybe don't even know, so don't try to best at something you can't master, be the best at the things you are already good at
i dunno though
Nope it's like same like aot everything was predicided same no matter what happens if the world needs help a saviour no matter how many doors will closed but the cycle of fate will alaways came where it was destined like every others charactwr are like they act like its there job to protect the world even though saving world or changing it it's not a one man duty just like light and madara they want to change the world foolish concept where here demon slayer does this a new way a new concept like even though how strong yurxhii he dosnt think that it's just his work if the real weilder of this power will born no matter what happens fate will end up meeting where it needs to be
Demob slayer is an psychological master piece its not certain but yet it's certain like there was no way of passing down a sun breath almost 0% still how fate moves and look how the true owner meets it's craft means owner get the sun breathing like yurichi was chosen by the goods no human can get that power not even his blood brothwr but why tanjiro got that who is not even his blood related like can you believe this like yurxhii tries to teach the breathing to other swordman but they can't and look how fate did his work tanjiro ancestor leaned that impossible thing basically he ain't learnt the thing but look how geniusly he adapted that breathing to dance a simple dervatives and how a weak generation literlly practising it for 100 of years how there genes got manupulated and a perfect body was created in the perfect era, in perfect time, and in perfect place who was the weilder tanjiro it's not tanji power it's the power of all his generation look at the transition hoe geniusly mangaka did that how a impoosibel breaking was handed to other and how masterfully it all make sense in the end it took 100 of years to manifest that power that yurxhii was born with and how this relation dosnt disrespect yurxhii neither tanjiro
Like when hashira said it looks like your the missing block of our bottle like by that mean there was all breathing but not sun breathing it was sun breathing that was missing and how with tanjiro that missing block connected and it's not like tanjiro is the most important he is still yet without hashiras he is nothing basically all are given justice
That's why I think this anime is an masterpiece
I think only one of the last generation’s big 3 shounen had that dangerous philosophy you were talking about. Ichigo never really had any goals beyond protecting his friends and family, while Luffy’s goal might be pirate king, but he’s shown plenty of times that he’s really more interested with the journey to that point and competing with others. Luffy is just happy as long as he is free to do as he pleases. Naruto was the only one who *had* to accomplish his goal, but considering how he viewed becoming hokage as the equivalent of being acknowledged and accepted by the people who shunned him as a child, it’s understandable. He really couldn’t see any other way to erase that unreasonable hatred they felt for him than pursuing an extreme goal.
U thought me a huge lesson in life thank you, I was just about to make a big mistake.
woooooooooooooooooow just wooooooooooooooooooow this is so good put i wanted black clover hopefully it comes out the next day or my hero acidemia
I think the Buddhist principles sprinkled throughout Demon Slayer all play a huge part in my enjoyment of the story. It feels packed full of life lessons that I can apply to my personal experience. Because of Demon Slayer, now I enjoy every bite of food and I value the time I get to be alive, knowing that nothing lasts forever.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!! Keep Up the great work!!!!! :D
You know which other manga tackles Shonen tropes from a different and more darkly comedic angle? Teppuu. It's about young female MMA fighters. And I like how that main character Natsuo is this bored, mean spirited prodigy who is instantly good at everything. While her rival is this overly friendly weirdo whose constant work ethic and unwavering attitude actually creeps people out. She's the anti-Ippo. Highly recommend.
