How to refill Thermacell radius.

  • In this video I show you how to refill the cartridge from my thermacell radius. Doing this will save you money by not having to buy replacement cartridges. The mixture that I have been using for my older thermacell seems to work fine. That ratio is 1:6 of Permeation 10 and water. I would use this ratio with a couple drops of blue food coloring on the pads. I’m using this ratio without food coloring for the new radius.

Here is what I do… Go to any Tractor Supply and get a bottle of Permethrin 10%. Mix Permethrin 5 to 1 with water. (5 parts distilled water to 1 part permethrin) I use an eyedropper type medicine dropper and only mix up a small amount at a time. Pull out the wick of empty canister. Refill canister with Permethrin 5 to 1 mixture. The original wick is just compressed paper so the Permethrin will deteriorate the original wick. You will need to replace it with something else. I have found the round bamboo chopsticks from a Chinese Restaurant are the right diameter and hold up really well. I just cut a piece of the chopstick the same length as the wick and carefully insert it back in the canister using the original rubber O-ring.

The active ingredient in the repellent, metofluthrin, is based on a naturally occurring repellent found in the chrysanthemum flower, which has historically been used to fight insects, according to Kyle Adelman, marketing manager for Thermacell.
Permethrin 10 is what the poster says he used to refill. Metofluthrin is similar to permethrin, in that it is a type of pyrethroid and is not to be used directly on the skin.

Determine the total volume of the refill and divide by two. Equal parts Permethrin and stove oil. The Permethrin has it's own dispenser well on the bottle, so I draw up the required amount and put it in the refill. I pour a small quantity of stove fuel in a small container and then use the syringe again. This way next use of the syringe, it should be good to go again. Nothing in portions around a liter intended to be sold to consumers. Just small packs/refills for specific products or near pure concentrate in a 25kg barrel with special disposal and handling instructions

    Quick Disclaimer:
Most of these refills are not meant to work with a water based mixture.
Here's a breakdown of a locally available vaporizer solution sold in stores for context:
    1. Understanding the Chemicals:
    Pyrethroids used:
    - Prallethrin:
A type of pyrethroid, used for its high effectiveness in knocking down mosquitoes.
    - Permethrin:
Another pyrethroid, widely used in insecticides, but with different properties and stability compared to Prallethrin.
Other based pyrethroid-solutions I have seen use Allethrin, Transfluthrin or even Metofluthrin instead. I think Thermacell uses Allethrin.
    2. Solvent Information:
    Isoparaffin Solvent:
Commonly referred to as isoparaffinic hydrocarbons, these are derived from crude oil and are known for their low odor and good solvency properties.
    Alternative Solvents:
Mineral Oil: Often used in various formulations, it's a good alternative due to its compatibility and low volatility.
Kerosene: Another alternative, but it has a stronger odor and might not be as refined as isoparaffin.
White Spirit: Also known as mineral spirits, it's similar to isoparaffin but can have a slightly stronger odor.
Water would not be a suitable replacement for mineral oil or isoparaffin solvents in this application. Here’s why:
    Reasons Water is Not Suitable:
    Chemical Solubility:
Permethrin and other pyrethroids are not soluble in water. They require a non-polar solvent (like isoparaffin or mineral oil) to dissolve and remain effective. Using water would result in an ineffective solution as the Permethrin would not properly dissolve or disperse.
    Vaporization Mechanism:
The vaporizer is designed to work with oil-based solvents, which have a higher boiling point and vaporize at the controlled rate needed for effective mosquito control. Water has a much lower boiling point and would evaporate too quickly or not at all in a manner suitable for the device’s operation.
    Wick Functionality:
The porous clay carbon wick in the vaporizer is designed to draw up oil-based liquids by capillary action. Water-based solutions would not be drawn up effectively due to differences in viscosity and surface tension.
    Suitable Alternatives:
If you’re looking for alternatives to isoparaffin solvents or mineral oil, consider the following:
    White Spirit (Mineral Spirits):
Similar properties to isoparaffins, though it may have a slightly stronger odor.
    Kerosene:
Often used in similar applications, but has a strong smell and needs to be handled with care.
    ---
If I can find Prallethrin or Permethrin locally here, I will try making my own solution using mineral oils or keroscene (probably a 1.26% version commonly used in India).

      fill it with allethrin

    • @jamesbell6230
      @jamesbell6230 3 года назад +3

@@Bluntsmoke The Thermacell site says it is allethrin but they are very guarded about the other 70%. Petroleum distillate sounds reasonable so that it is evaporated by heat on the wick. Problem with allethrin is that is toxic to both cats and bees. Other pyrethroids have a variety of toxicities as well, so I was thinking about neem oil - which is used widely in India for refilling plug in bug repellants (AirWick style). Also in India there was a large scale test on burning 1% neem oil in kerosene (tiki type) torches and that was very effective as a repellant. I think I will get some ultra pure - no smoke - lamp oil (Lamplight), add some neem oil and see how that works in tiki torches. Will also try the same mix in Thermacell cartridge. Rather than pulling the wick out (and maybe breaking it) I'm going to try drilling a small hole in the top and refill with a blunt syringe needle. Obviously doesnt have to be completely sealed as wick isn't after removing protective cap.
