As a beginner I am rapidly appreciating exactly as you say: observe and recreate what you see, at least for realism. It takes a while to get used to the high level of detail you need to be aware off, and I'm still trying to get good at that. I am more into water colour and (forced in class!) acrylic. Thanks for helping prepare me for oils!

PineApple. People do not know how lucky they are to have youtube. I tried to learn Oil painting in 1965 - 1968. As a young teenager and really made a mess. Did not no what I was doing and gave up. Now just retiring and find all the resources available to learn how to paint. Hence very pleased to find you on youtube.

This was probably one of my favorite videos. There was a lot to take away from your process. Also the fact of how you mentioned continuing to work on things that may have already been well enough only to mess them up and have to fix them again. Too many people see YT videos where art is done in one masterful stroke and its perfect. This brings home the point that art isnt at all like that. Thank you for an awesome demomstration.

It was so helpful getting me started on mixing colors because I had no idea where to start with that. I was expecting a step by step tutorial (like paint nite) but it wasn't and now I'm so GLAD it wasn't! I learned so much more this way. Thank you Lena!

Lena Danya would be great if you did a series of basic stills like this something like a year of study ..would get beginners to follow along ..motivation and master them as they paint along with you. Like an art quest...and end if year everyone would advance...one fruit a month or two...not sure if you have time...many students we'd love to support in one way...even if we can't on patreon.

This is just a wonderful teaching session for beginners! I've gained so much more from this frank and open display of the ordinary mind engaged in creating a piece of art... You have revealed much more about the process of painting than those highly choreographed masters who never make a mistake in any brush stoke. Hooray for the human element in painting! Thank you for your naturalness and honesty.

I don't oil paint, but I am intrigued by the process of it. I also love learning about the different mediums and techniques for oils.
But what I found from watching your videos is a lot of transferable skills like brush techniques and the process of a painting. The biggest thing I have learned is colour theory, especially your explanations about the shadows and high lights.
You are incredible and I love your spirit and perspective on painting. I look forward to your future videos and art works! :)

Pineapples... I'm about to start oil painting again after about 20 years... OMG, I feel really old now... But I tried oil paints in High School and someone I care about a lot told me I had no talent for it, so I stopped. I should have kept going because I really enjoyed it, and I liked what I made. My hubby is amazing though and encourages me in my art, so I decided to give it another go now that I am older, lol. I love your art, I've been watching some of your videos and some from other oil painters for inspiration... I have everything I need now, just trying to get up the guts to start! Hi Heather :-) You're the only other person I see that commented "Pineapples" haha! Although, I only got this far down in the comments. When I was in grade 5 or 6, a kid told me I would never be an artist, after making fun of my painting. His painting was awesome, and I believed him. I avoided art for over 30 years...funny how people can affect us with their words, not funny haha. Interesting really, and sad. I'm so happy you have a husband who supports your arting! That's really cool! Have you started painting? I hope so

Besides I love art, I have found that it really helps a lot with my depression, I’ve been under medication for 9 years but this past year the doctor has been giving me lower doses and I’m about to finish with them! It’s incredible how much it has helped me!

Btw, is having a limited pallette better than having a pallette full of different colours?

    • @LenaDanya
      @LenaDanya  6 лет назад +6

I think it depends! Limited palettes are great for learning color theory and if on a budget or keeping their possessions minimalistic. But I also love having lots unique pigments that make it possible to paint with colors that would not otherwise not be achieved through basic limited palette simply because those pigments aren't there

Pine... apples... Can't thank you enough. I'm new to painting and your videos are the best that I've seen. They have become a reference for me.
You nailed it with this one. Videography, editing, lighting are fantastic. But what makes it stand out is your commentary. It's amazing! It's incredibly helpful and encouraging not to only see you work, but actually hear what your thought process is at that moment. I love that I can see how you view and correct stuff and hear your thought process along with it! There are a million painting vids on RUclips but I think that your attention to detail not just to the how-to but the why-and--the-reason I'm doing it is why your vids stand apart. You are a born teacher. It's obvious that you put your heart and soul into what you do. Please keep doing what you're doing, you're great at it.

Drea Sachse I’m not Lena (obviously) but thought I’d jump in here incase you’re still looking for an answer. I always let my galkyd mix, dry in the glass container if there’s any left over. After a couple of days it dries like a piece of plastic and you can just peel it off and throw it away.

i put it in a bowl so i always have some left over, and with the stuff i use to clean my brushes i just leave it out snd eventually the paint falls to the bottom and i can re use it.

I know with acrylic paint water people put the paint water in a container with cat litter in it and the cat litter absorbs the liquid. Then u can throw the clumps of cat litter away in the trash. So I think you can do the same with the gamsol mix. I think with any of the painting substances that should not go down the sink can be put in cat litter.
      Great question.

You did an awesome job explaining this! My eight-year-old daughter and I are going to start painting and it looks like I picked the right video to start off with. There were some thumbs down on your video and I cannot understand what they had a problem with? You did great! After watching this I am so excited for us to get started. Thank you!

Pineapples! Great video, thank you so much. I have enjoyed watercolour and acrylic for a long time now and have always been afraid to try oil. I had no idea I needed mediums and would have just started putting paint straight on a canvas lol. I’ve learned lots from you and can’t wait to give it a go!! Thanks again! 🍍

Lena, thank you for this video for beginners! I haven't really had a lot of time to paint, but I always find myself watching your painting tutorials when I can. Thank you again! Pineapples!

Hi Lena, pineapples! You were born to do this! Not only oil painting but teaching people. I started a week ago, and so far (don’t want to be friend any others 😄) your videos were least condescending, most helpful, and inspiring! You get it !!! - meaning you realize many people’s urge to express themselves, not to create a perfect realistic painting. Thank you - without your videos - I’m serious - I probably would not get as dark to realistic painting as painting an apple ☺️. YOU made it look like possible and fun! Thank you..

I've been oil painting for months now and didn't even feel like I needed a tutorial but...can't miss a lena video! So soothing just to watch and listen to (I actually got inspired about 10 minutes in and starting painting something entirely different but let the video play all the way through) oh and also, pineapples

Having never been an oil painter or really understood how the medium worked (acrylic was always my favourite) and not having painted for decades, I'm slowly working through your tutorials, which are great, before I dive into oils big-time. Thank you for your time and effort. Pineapples is the least I could do.

Thank you for this tutorial, they're not really a lot of oil painting tutorials but there is a lot of acrylic ones which I like. I'm thinking of trying oil but I'm extremely nervous but this tutorial definitely helped calm some of those nerves. 😀

I loved painting with oils in high school, but that was years ago and I’ve lost my touch. I’ve been wanting to get back into. This video helped me a ton! I’d forgotten how to properly use the turpentine and mediums together, so thank you for this video!!

I'm in love with glass, and paper backing for the palette, and pineapples. You do make this look less intimidating, and I'm working through the beginner videos because I ADORE how you are showing oils blend. I think I enjoyed that with acrylics only to find I couldn't use any of it before it dried. So now I'm hyped. Thank you for the video and work put into producing this!

PINEAPPLES. Thank you Lena. That was very encouraging. What a refreshingly down to earth and relaxing tutorial to watch. I’ve only ever used acrylic paint but want to branch out to oils. Some of the other videos I watched made it seem like quite an intimidating process but yours has made me excited and eager to get my first oil kit. Can’t wait to experiment. Your stuff is awe inspiring but again, how wonderful to see an artist so approachable and talented in the one package. Can’t wait for more. Love from Scotland x

Also your other videos have been great to help give me an idea of what brand of quality paints to use. Keep making tutorials!! Oh and your cat is really cute.

Hi Lena, Greetings to your pineapples too. An excellent demonstration and narrative. You are extremely generous with your detailed information and reasons behind your strokes. This video would be of immense benefit to anyone starting out in oils and should have more prominence amongst RUclips art videos. I hope to see much more of your work.
