It's a common misconception that "survival of the fittest" means "survival of the strongest" or "every man for himself", but in reality "fittest" merely means "most fit for survival". Think of "fit" as in how a puzzle piece "fits" as opposed to "fit" as in "someone who works out a lot". For social animals, the most adaptable and cooperative ARE the "fittest".
Classic IT moment. "Have you tried turning it off again?"
technical issues, fascinating.
It's a battle of the accents!
The Three Blind Mice... see how they run, at the mouth.
why do you religious people always resort to something quoted in a story book? first the bible and now three blind mice? aw your poor brain.
Makes me happy to see DPR looking so healthy xx
Did you hear he died in January 2020?

Selfishness and empathy are human concepts and unless you came from a people that were tribal in origin then you cannot say whether or not we are better off NOT working as a group.
Wow! God walks among us.
We are not worthy.
Fair enough. When people start using evolutionary theory and applying it to culture is where we have to be careful. It makes sense to do this, but we really have to look more at this before start applying it to philosophy. Ive heard many people compare the two different lifestyles of our closest relatives as evidence of differences of culture between different species: chimpanzees and Bonobos. Their relationships are dramatically different, but I think its the bonobos culture that is favorable.
This is... awesome.
It's incredible how this unambiguous distinction seems to be so often misunderstood.
Part 1 OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF 3 !!!!!! keyword "OF"!
I cant believe you.. got dawkins. wow.. :D
Dawkins is one of the greatest scientists in the World.
But can't be bothered to buy good internet.
You can't explain that.
He's a pseudoscientist.
@@ericclaey2243 he's an evolutionary bioligist and qualified zoologist. and you?
The link on the side? I skimmed through 7 minutes of "Dawkins talking barely audible over loud rock music" with occasional "biased people making lots of assertions", and didn't see anything relevant. Maybe you should direct me to the part which has something to do with what I said - or just quote it. That video didn't exactly seem.. err.. information heavy.
The fact remains that scientific descriptions can't be logically turned into social prescriptions, no matter how much some people try.
OH MY GOD! FRIGGIN AWESOME! !
I dont really dont understand why theres so much emphasis on this aspect of Darwin's theory, yes there is biological emphasis towards humans being selfish. Theres also seems to be just as much towards a theory of mutual aid, empathy etc. I refer mainly to Peter Kroptkins work "Mutual Aid", where he percieved that organizisms had a higher chance of survival if they work together. Organisisms that have symbiotic relationships have stronger chances of survival due to their relationships.
The survival of the human species makes altruism neccesary.Religion causes separation, conflicts, wars and hinders scientific progress.Science is not a belief,it's the continued rational search for the truth..I'm a CCU RN.I lie all day long, telling people they are doing good.I'm going to hell because I'm atheist, but I have spent my entire life saving people from death and making them feel good.Reason will survive, and you guys will be responsible for our survival.Thank you(P.S. Hell is Xtian BS).
Well you said it was "Darwin's idea", which is what I was correcting. The idea of Social Darwinism (what you're talking about) isn't from Darwin. It would be like if someone made an ideology called "Social Newtonism" which declared "What goes up, MUST come down!" as a command to be obeyed. You're right that it's a misconceptions, but it's not Darwin's. Darwin just used "survival of the fittest" as a synonym for "natural selection". Other people with agendas misconstrued Darwin's meaning.
Richard bailed out!
These ideas i think do lead to conservative mindsets in people and for good reason. Since its not really possible to witness evolution takeplace due to how slow evolution works it seems hard to pinpoint exactly the mechanism by which it takes place. So one must look at modern animals and them most make educated guesses as to what makes a strong characteristics for survival. To me the species that has a strong support system and works together always are going to have a higher rate of survival.
OH MY JIZZUS CHRIST! i thought this video didnt have sound!? how didnt i know about this wtf
His blinking is code. The takeover begins soon.
The kid in the movie chronical had a survival of the fittest ideology and he fucked shit up!
QUIT BLINKING RICHARD DAWKINS!
lol
Hah! I know, I was just giving you a hard time.
I dont think they are. I think humans just either have problems or refuse the c these characteristics in other animals. Its normal and accepted for you to be speciesist. Second, we all came from people who were tribal in origin at one point. And I can say that people are better off working together because all I have to do is look at history and maybe delve into the purpose of cultures. Also look at other species. The strongest are ones that work in groups and use sybiotic relationships.
Uhg, yes, with insects and microorganisms its a little different. But its a little harder to identify characteristics of either selfishness or empathy in those organisms dont you think? Either way its "difficult", and it doesnt negate my point that organisms have more incentives to work together versus acting selfishly. I have no problem with evolution, just with Darwins idea of survival of the fittest. It survival of the most adaptable and cooperative. Not the law of tooth and claw.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
oh this isnt that vid
Yes its the species that best fits in its nieche. Thats exactly what I said above. But that wasnt its original meaning. People still have these conceptions of evolution, particularly human evolution, where it was our wit and dominion over other animals, the mighty hunter concept. But I really think this is wishful thinking and that many people project this onto other species. Just trying to get a more realistic view on our evolution and the behavior that allowed us to be successful.
I think you misunderstand what fitness actually means.
Fix the title.

:-)
No I dont, it just means the most adaptable. Its a catch all phrase that means the most likely to survive. I just feel like people still push this mindset anyways even though they say different. If you actually READ my comment you'd see that I just said that.
It's cool that Richard is there of course, but some people get so excited one would mistake it for the "second coming of Jesus."
Nice discussion guys. I wish you would have talked further about the Clergy Rescue Project.
