In a sport where underwaters are increasingly important and often the source of DQs, at one of the biggest meets in our sport, we’re still relying on above water 720p video (“thanks” ESPN) and spectator RUclips uploads (genuine thank you to Kyle Millis, ASU's poolside perspective, and others). Do the officials at least have underwater footage for review?
Great video! I appreciate it when people take extra time to edit their videos to perfection, you don’t see it very often anymore, especially in smaller communities like swimming!
You & Kyle should team up. Kyle & Kyle calling meets, what a team. Some time ago I was officiating a small meet at a local pool with 4-foot depth at the turn end. It was a 5 free, middle of the race a swimmer stops at the turn end because he needed a break; he stands there for maybe 10-15 seconds & I walk over to ask him if he's okay. He says he's fine, he just needs to catch his breath, and I told him that's fine. But then when he's ready to go he...pushes off the bottom of the pool in a way that gave him forward momentum.
Touching the bottom is allowed. You are not allowed to walk / jump from the bottom: 10.5 In all events, a swimmer when turning shall make physical contact with the end of the pool or course. The turn must be made from the wall, and it is not permitted to take a stride or step from the bottom of the pool. 10.6 Standing on the bottom during freestyle events or during the freestyle portion of medley events shall not disqualify a swimmer, but he shall not walk.
Looks like a breaststroke kick rather than a push off the bottom. I don't know why he would do that. Maybe he went too deep and close to the bottom, and he couldn't get up using dolphin kicks?
I got a lot of my best times at husky in federal way, but BROO😂 why would you do NCAA, the biggest short course event in the world, at A POOL WHERE YOU START IN 5 FT DEEP WATER LOL. I don’t even blame him for pushing off the bottom, he had to do a breast stroke kick just to not break his legs. He also could have literally won the relay (possibly) without that happening
pretty wild on that 800 free relay start. do you think he just lost his mind for a second there on the dive? why would you possibly hit the bottom of the pool?
Nah, think that last swimmer in 800 relay for Cal did some screwy breaststroke thingy to get back to the surface as fast as he could after that too-deep dive. Think if he'd pushed off the bottom, there'd be more force behind the trajectory.
Oh, sorry, I cut the video right at the end. I can't imagine what must have been going through his mind. And the ribbing he's going to get, some time in the (appropriate) future. lol. Thanks for the video.
The Federal Way pool has some very strange design choices, not surprised people are having issues. NCAAs should just swap between the University of Texas's Jamail Pool or IUPUI, with maybe Georgia Tech as a third location to rotate. My favorite pool to race in was probably ASU's, but it's outside so they can't really rely on it for NCAAs. Also a big shoutout to the Air Force Academy pool and campus, which is incredible- but the venue is too small and there's no way anyone is doing distance events at 7,250 feet above sea level.
Couldn't agree more. We should have 2-3 locations that "own" the meet and get to get GOOD at hosting the event/make YOY improvements to their hosting abilites. This would also allow for fans to get good at attending the event. IE: I know what hotel I like to stay at when the meet is in [insert city] and I also know that I'll get to go to [insert favorite restaruant] as well
Kyle .. do you think Lane 3 Texas should have been DQ'd on the backstroke ?.. He was so long into his turn and quite clearly to me freestyle kicked into the turn which we know is not allowed .. It's so blatant compared to the other backstroke turns .. What do you think ?
@Sockwell That's very inconsistent though .. One of our young swimmers got DQ'd for gliding in to much at a really low level meet at the weekend yet they won't DQ for the same thing at NCAA's ?? .. Here is the DQ code and description that got Joe who is 11 DQ'd .. 6.4 Turn: Rolling onto the front for a turn is allowed, but the action must be continuous. Gliding or extra kicks after the arm pull are not permitted.
I am ear to ear grinning for 10 minutes straight, just so stoked that swimming has this coverage now
put in WORK on the edit on this one. hope y’all enjoy it 🙏

6. 7 Edit is fire
STOPED IN THE MIDDLE OF PRACTICE TO WATCH 🔥🔥🔥
High risk. High reward.
What’s crazy is that if Henveaux didn’t mess up his start, Cal probably could’ve went 5:58
We need a lane of normal ordinary average swimmer guys compete with them to comprehend how fast they are going
I rate the edits a 6/7

With a clean start, they can go 5:58!!!
Thanks for the video Kyle

More to come! Had fun with this one.

PUTTING IN WORK!
Need a meet mobile reversion now
love u Kyle
Cool and funny vid
its looks like he did a pull down 9:31
Great edit
Yes Kyle I love you
It looks the like the cal guy hit his hands on the bottom of the pool then did a dolphin kick to get back to the surface.
4:21 wtf is that dive
Scotty usually dives like that but it was exaggerated because he tried to keep his feet on the block as long as possible
0:49 No way 😭🙏
I know 😭😭
Watching on a train

Think theu should rename the championships "The Mens/Womens Speedwave"
Nah... he didn't push off rom the bottom o the pool. Sometimes a shitty start is just a shitty start,
Later gator
vs
Hey Kyle! I think you sometime recently just visited at my pool at practice. It was the NCAP team. Hope you see this!
Uwu
Did this man really go a 20 3,4,5,6… 7 (insert lamelo here)
We need splits and the yellow record line like at the Olympics for the live stream. Please talk to your people and make this happen!
If the NCAA/ESPN had me on a headset doing commentary for the event I could talk to my people. Until then, I ain't got people to talk to.
Didn’t 67 was a ting in March ool
why doesn't ncaa have a under water cam but a random high school in Road island does
Looks like a breaststroke kick rather than a push off the bottom. I don't know why he would do that. Maybe he went too deep and close to the bottom, and he couldn't get up using dolphin kicks?
not sure but i think i heard that it was a combo of his foot potentially slipping and streamline breaking

Probably occurred because Michael Jackson was spotted in the stands
Kyle. When is the sock brand dropping? Partner with speedo and make some banger socks
erm
pretty wild on that 800 free relay start. do you think he just lost his mind for a second there on the dive? why would you possibly hit the bottom of the pool?
Man why did I see this 5 minutes before the meet now I gotta pause the video to watch it

so we have the same opinion on it then 😉

He touched the bottom (legal), did his best to NOT push off the bottom - horrible start, good recovery.
I'm confused I thought NCAA had 50-200 in all strokes what did you mean 50 back isn't and individual event?
NCAA contested events can be see below:

How many sessions are there at this meet? There’s gotta be like slightly more than 6…
I'm pretty sure there are SEVEN 🫨

what’s weird about the KCAC? i swim there all the time and its a great place
I mean, anybody know the odds on Chris Giuliano getting $1 million to go to Texas?
Very low. I’ve heard some numbers thrown around by credible sources and they are not in that range.
@Sockwellmissed the pun there… it’s okay. The “odds”
@Psimon3 🥲🥲🥲
How do you watch it not in person I need to know
ESPN+!! Only about $11 to watch the next three finals sessions (and prelims as well)
Thank you

They won't DQ someone for an incontinuous backstroke turn at this level.
