  • 🔥🔥Come along on a quick trip to see a sample of what kind of cool rocks, fossils, and minerals the Arkansas River has delivered to the banks below the dam. #rockhounding #arkansas
When I can't get away for rockhounding crystals, geo-goodies, and fossils in other parts of Arkansas, I sneak off to this somewhat hidden in plain sight spot on the banks of the Arkansas River below the Dam. It's north off Interstate 430 in Little Rock. about a half mile east on Crystal Hill Road. You WILL find a variety of rocks and if you are like me, you will wish you had more time to rockhound there. I find agates, garnets, metals, fossils, chalcedony, and more. Some rocks are washed down the river and some are from the boulders and chunks of rock hauled in to slow erosion around the dam. The area has been prone to flooding in the past few years and it's always interesting to see what washes up after the flood waters recede and whether any goodies were tumbled out of the boulders. To access the best area, you will need to drive across part of the dam. Also, before you go you may want to check to be sure the water is not too high as the area is sometimes under water and closed. Remember to follow all laws and regulations regarding collecting in this area.

A new rock shop has opened nearby this spot called "The Stone Maiden". If you are in the area, you should stop by and check it out. This site is also near "Crystal Hill." As a young pebble pup, it was a right of passage to climb and collect crystals there. It is currently being commercially mined for other rock.
