Parents are going to be parents, especially in a homogeneous society like China. They want the best for their children from their own perspectives. Even in America, in this day and age, bringing home someone from a different race to Thanksgiving dinner will raise a lot of eyebrows from family and relatives. His mom just wanted him to think carefully on his future and those of his children. However, the ultimate decision will be his and his alone and the parents will come around to accept it. Personally, I think he makes the right choice since the girl is of good character and they seem to compliment each other well.
It really crazy the difference in human beings Ziheng went to her home and was introduced to her family and they made him feel welcome without prejudice and his family is cannot do the same. It’s amazing how much people make color the cause for not excepting someone.

Ziheng's parents are both traditional minded people who will take some time to fully accept Erica as a future daughter in law. That said, Ziheng's mother is a very kind and wise woman who does not hold back her concerns but openly shares them with her son whom she dearly loved.

First they will give reasons why they think the relationship will not work or is improper. If the child continues the relationship then the parents will become more vocal. They might pretend to be sick and make the child think they are making them sicker. If that doesn't work then they can become openly hostile and even cut off contact with their child. If the child stands his/her ground, the parents may eventually come around (could take years) or they may never come around. I personally feel that the African Chinese dynamic works because both cultures have similar family values, they respect their parents and elders. I have watched this 5 or so times and actually Zihengs mom's reaction was not too bad and she voiced her concerns in a way not to be disrespectful of Erica. And at the end it seems she was saying if you all are willing to go the distance go for it and do not do it halfway. And i liked the way she held Erica's hands while saying that.
I felt uncomfortable for Erica, but I felt that Ziheng handled the situation well. Perhaps he needs to inform his parents that he and Erica are serious about each other and are planning for their long-term future. Zheng's mother will have to see past Erica's colour and race. To add maybe a little context, it sounds like Ziheng’s parents are not big city people who have been exposed to a lot of worldly influences, so yes they would be rather traditional and conservative. I think Mom is hesitant mostly because in traditional Chinese culture (and many other cultures too but it’s very prominent in Chinese culture), a marriage is between two families. There’s really no such thing as casual dating - the sole purpose of having a girlfriend is to eventually grow that relationship into that of a husband and wife. That said, according to tradition, anything that is not that, even if they are romantically involved, is just friends. And a girlfriend isn’t officially a girlfriend in the man’s parents’ eyes until they meet her parents and they both bless their union. I guess the thinking is that when you have the investment of both families, then we know this is serious and then it’s ok to tell people. That said, Mom didn’t straight out say no - and it’s clear to your point that she really likes Erica personally - she just said she needs time to accept the relationship. It’s likely the first time she’s heard of a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship that didn’t have a mapped out, both-families approved plan for eminent marriage. So it seems like Mom is more confused than she is opposed. Trust me, if she was truly opposed she wouldn’t be feeding the two of them - much less being worried about whether they liked the food or not!

First they will give reasons why they think the relationship will not work or is improper. If the child continues the relationship then the parents will become more vocal. They might pretend to be sick and make the child think they are making them sicker. If that doesn't work then they can become openly hostile and even cut off contact with their child. If the child stands his/her ground, the parents may eventually come around (could take years) or they may never come around. Some Asian parents may not be thrilled about their child's romantic partner, but they may try to be more accepting. I personally feel that the African Chinese dynamic works because both cultures have similar family values, they respect their parents and elders. My observation of Ziheng and Erica’s relationship is that they keep it simple,he takes the lead but is considerate of Erica’s feelings and ideas and will often defer to her.

To add maybe a little context, it sounds like Ziheng’s parents are not big city people who have been exposed to a lot of worldly influences, so yes they would be rather traditional and conservative. I think Mom is hesitant mostly because in traditional Chinese culture (and many other cultures too but it’s very prominent in Chinese culture), a marriage is between two families. There’s really no such thing as casual dating - the sole purpose of having a girlfriend is to eventually grow that relationship into that of a husband and wife. That said, according to tradition, anything that is not that, even if they are romantically involved, is just friends. And a girlfriend isn’t officially a girlfriend in the man’s parents’ eyes until they meet her parents and they both bless their union. I guess the thinking is that when you have the investment of both families, then we know this is serious and then it’s ok to tell people. That said, Mom didn’t straight out say no - and it’s clear to your point that she really likes Erica personally - she just said she needs time to accept the relationship. It’s likely the first time she’s heard of a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship that didn’t have a mapped out, both-families approved plan for eminent marriage. So it seems like Mom is more confused than she is opposed. Trust me, if she was truly opposed she wouldn’t be feeding the two of them - much less being worried about whether they liked the food or not!
