- How do you ride a half halt in dressage? This question has about a million different answers. This is why you will find so many videos on Dressage Hub that explain the half halt, how to use it and how to teach it to your horse.
Half halts are an important way to communicate with our horse, to get its attention or to provide help in movements and figures. But how do we ride them correctly? Dirk Bolten explains the theory behind a half halt.
Academy-Trainer Dirk Bolten is rider by himself and rode successfully up to advanced jumping classes. As a trainer for movements, oriented on the model of Eckart Meyners, he constantly educates himself in topics like seat and coordination teaching. Always fascinating to see in his classes: He manages it to get big results with little effort.

The best explanation online
His description of how muscle chains work in the half-halt were excellent I think this is one of the best descriptions for half halt that I have heard.
I do understand and also use this method but never really thought about all the pieces in this manner.
I sure would like to hear more of his teaching!
I agree!! This was really good.
Totally agree!
The best explanation I’ve ever heard and seen. I wish all instructors and trainers would study biomechanics at depth and length.
Best explanation I've seen. I love the use of the moving chair and explaining about the breath. I've been told several different things but it's not been explained or put together like this. I never realized the use of the breath and how it affects riding.
Brilliant video. Thank you. ❤
Love the detailed explanation-- I will experiment tomorrow. ⭐️
Wow, this is an awesome explanation and video! Thank you so much!! 😊
Very precise explanation! I never really understood what it entailed!
Excellent vivid realistic explanation on the base of science . Very helpful for the concept of ‘half halt’. Thanks a lot 😊
Best explanation of half halt.
I wonder if this works for younger horses that are still learning how to come up and over on to the bit
Yes!!
@@DressageHub thank you
I think your question makes a valid point. No untrained horse will respond to a half halt.
I think this is over-complicating to the enth degree! No novice rider on a novice horse can possibly use a half halt. The further the horse is trained, the more experienced the rider the more seamless this becomes. By the time a rider has thought this load of verbiage out they will be totally out of control!
Feeling proud of myself for having watched this explanation before in German and now seeing it on DressageHub🙈.
