I've just recently treated myself to the Sega Astro City Mini that contains all three games. So I'm kicking the hell out of all three games again. Good times.
I had Wonder Boy on Game Gear - good conversion as I recall. I also loved Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap! Glad to hear you're enjoying the Astro City Mini; looks very cool.
I too loved the original Wonder Boy back in the day. The first port I played was the C64 version which I loved until I saw the Master System version - then it was like all my Christmases came at once. I couldn’t believe how close to the arcade it was. I can’t play it now though as I’m so used to the arcade version that any slight variation in timing would hurt. Plus the big difference between the two is the arcade version let’s you control your skateboard speed mid air - that makes all the difference.
I played this game so much, yet only the first 3 levels a familiar to me. I think 10 year old me would be sad to know there were more then 3 levels to this game. Gosh it was hard.
Omg. I used so many quarters on this as a kid at the arcade jn Grand Bend Ontario. Fav game at the arcade for sure. Remember how there was Wonder Boy in Monsterland too! Wow memories

Thanks a million for this video. I am playing the Remix version right now and this video helped me on the 1-coin run to get all the letters for extra lifes. Unfortunately one letter glitched already twice for me around Area 5 or 6 but all the others can be obtained with the help of this. Plus you can study enemy placements and traps with this video. One goblin on the arcade did not spawn for me in remix but then I had 4 bees there, that were not on the arcade version. Today I failed at 8-2, hopefully tomorrow I manage :)
Amazing I wish I could buy this arcade game. I spent many days in the arcade room of my apartment complex putting an insane amount of quarters into this game! ❤
the arcade doesn't have the secret heart stages like in the Master System version where you find a secret item like a purse, or sunglasses which summons a lil red head girl then both the blond boy & the red head girl jump into the sky onto the clouds where you collect hearts. Also the Master System has extra enemies like flies (not to confuse with the wasps but a new fly enemy for the master system) that swoop down from a tree, those spiky pods that fall from trees, vultures, lizards, scorpions, active volcanos shooting rocks & an extra stage types like a desert with cactus, a cloud stage, & bridge stage with waterfalls in the backdrop with new small red fish enemies (not to get confused with the big blue fish on the island stages)
Great playing, but I'm not sure if the person playing is aware that you can make the letters appear by jumping where they are located. You don't have to hit them with the ax
I remember a cheat in this game that I’d use while playing at the local Dairy Queen. After losing all my lives, I would enter three hearts for the initials. Doing that would give me a free continue, but it only worked once.

IMO The only good way to play these old games, to feel just like the arcade is to play them at their original resolutions and refresh rates on a 4:3 crt display. The arcade version of wonderboy should be running at its original intended resolution of 512 x 224 @ 60.096153Hz so the image is displayed 60.096153 times per second, modern pcs and gpus cant output those resolutions and timings anymore and modern displays cant display them. When you run mame the games being displayed are probably 1920 by 1080 @ 60hz the timing of the game gets messed up to fit and you get those issues you describe. If you really want to play mame games properly at their original "native resolutions" there are a few options, i chose a windows 10 pc with CRT Emudriver and a compatible AMD GPU for it to work in combination with Groovymame and other emulators that will allow them to automatically display at the resolutions once setup. You could get a MiSTer FPGA to do it and is supposedly more accurate than mame but less titles to play or a raspberry pi might be the cheapest and easiest through AV cables to pretty much any crt or you could get a RGB Pi cable would give the pi nicer image but you would then need to also find a CRT with RGB inputs like i had to for the PC setup i have. Its a hobby though will take abit of work to get going but its alot of hours of fun to be had with friends and family.
The 7th boss (7-4) is the final boss unless you get all the dolls which opens up the secret final area 8 and final boss on 8-4. There are additional levels on the Master System version, 9 areas in total (10 in total if you get all dolls) so perhaps you might be thinking of that version

Probably should’ve kicked the final boss’s head into the pit, just to be safe.
If u collected every one why was there no 9th boss? That is what it used to do in the arcade i used to play this at ??
The 7th boss (7-4) is the final boss unless you get all the dolls which opens up the secret final area 8 and final boss on 8-4.
There are additional levels on the Master System version, 9 areas in total (10 in total if you get all dolls) so perhaps you might be thinking of that version
What’s with that girl giving the player a death glare, anyway?
MISSED OUT ON KILLING HALF THE THINGS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED SO THERE FOR THE HIGHEST SCORE WASN'T AS HIGH AS IT COULD HAVE BEEN ☺️☺️☺️
I always tried to kill everything and collect all the food!
Adventure Island?
Geez,rough ending though 🤣
Why do you keep eating the poisonous mushroom every time?
They are not poisonous. The magic mushrooms turn all the fruit into junk food. Like cheeseburgers pie ice cream sundaes piña coladas. Junk food is worth 500 points. Instead of 50 or 100 or 200
It gives better fruits
This isn't Mario
@@planetX15Mario has poisoned mushrooms? No version on NES, SuperNES or N64 that I ever played had that.
@@xcoder1122 Maybe not the first Mario, but definitely Mario 2 (Japanese Version) A K.A The Lost Levels had them, they were brown, if you touched one you'd die
On what are you playing this ?
Is that last head supposed to look like someone?
