Small Correction: The 00-02 (pre-facelift) models have staggered wheels. Same diameter front and back, but slightly wider wheels in the rear. Taller tires in the rear as well. Rear hubs have an indent that prevent them from being installed on the front.
"Is it worth it?" is a question that can only be answered by the owner / driver. I've had mine 12 years and still enjoy it so much I cannot wait until my next outing. Almost embarrassing to confess, I feel like a kid on Christmas eve whenever I know that the next day will be a sunny, clear, "top down day." To me, yes, it is worth it.
Would you recommend this for a high school commuter car? It seems like a lot of fun and they get a lot of personality, they just seem a little dangerous.
@@AustinSmith-fo8jg They are fun and have plenty of personality, but as far as safety goes, it would depend a lot on the experience and maturity of the driver. Cars in general are dangerous in the hands of anyone, and especially high schoolers; this would be more dangerous than the average car, especially where you have icy or snowy roads. I really couldn't recommend this as a first car. A level-headed high schooler who has experience driving, who isn't prone to racing, taking chances and showing off, and who doesn't need to carry lots of people or cargo, will be rewarded with this. Also, you are small and lower down, so you are harder for others to see. And I must add that a second car will be needed for big shopping trips. As long as you have understanding family or friends that can help in that area, no problem. To sum up, safety-wise and utility-wise, you need to pretend that you are riding a motorcycle. If you approach it with that attitude, you will probably be OK.
I’ve had my’02 since’03, i joke that they are going to bury me in this thing; I can’t imagine how I can ever sell it…oh, and you haven’t lived until you’ve had the ass end spin out in a tight curve …
Agree 100%. ... We have now owned ours for 17 years and it still puts a smile on my face when driving the car, especially in the twisty's and always arrive home thinking what an amazing little car the MR-S is.
That’s my car! I bought it from Royal South in April. Replaced the headers to get rid of the precats, took care of the faded plastic all over, and have replacement seats on order. Love that car. It’s the first car I’ve ever had that begs you to speed up in the turn.
"...having too much fun to care about my own mortality" Ha! Great review. I have had my 2003 Spyder since new, it's close to 74k miles now. It does rattle. If I drive for more than 2 hours in one day my back hurts. No trunk means you never have to pick anyone up at the airport. Shifting really is the fun part: bouncing between second and third on a lonely, windy country road with the top down and all that oversteer is where the MR2 Spyder excels.
Would you recommend this for a high school commuter car? It seems like a lot of fun and they get a lot of personality, they just seem a little dangerous.
Is it worth lowering with the stock body? Do the wheels rub? And does it have any affect on how far you can turn? Sorry for the barrage of questions I just bought my dads MRS so I’m just a little excited about working on it.
@@veganwaffle Absolutely it's worth it. Mine rides on cut springs with stock wheels with no issues regarding rubbing unless an expected bump in the road arrises. I have its engine bay nappy still on its underside which gets the odd scrape, but it feel so much more like a go kart that you're really part of the road (in a good way). It turns with no issues. I only drive it 3 or 4 times a year but it always turns heads. (this video demonstrates a lowered look: ruclips.net/video/KOFZC4aMFBo/видео.html) Mine looks so good that I once tried shagging its exhaust pipe.
I think that snap oversteer for the mk3 is just a carried over misnomer from the way earlier mr2's. They had long fixed that issue by this model! Unless it's raining, or you're pushing it stupidly hard (as any rear engine car will oversteer eventually if you keep pushing it further and further), you've got nothing to worry about at all imho.
I've pushed mine HARD and didn't even budge. Calling it snappy is probably because they either put more HP on it (2ZZ) and still try to drive it the same way or just don't know how to take corners on a mid engine car. Of course if you try to drift it like an 86 you're going to spin around, the whole point of the MR2 is how fast it turns due to its layout and lightweight. Trying to drive it like a drift car is dumb and will make people hug a tree.
I am a newer driver, and fucked around and found out. Drove stupidly when going left on a junction, and ended up turning 270° too far. Didn't hit any kerb tho, so no damage.
I have a 00 mr2 spyder with 130k miles it's in really good condition I got it at a junk yard for $1700. It's been my daily and it makes commuting a lot more fun.
What year did you get it? Had to be 2018 or before....you can't get them that cheap anymore. I bought one of the cheapest I could find at $5500 with 127k mikes. I bought it last month.
I got mine as a shell for 1000! Found the rest of the parts for a total price of 3k the Mr-s community was nothing but good to me when I was looking for all the parts everyone is very tight knit and very helpful
I love my 2002 MR2 bought new in December 2021 right off the showroom floor. I saw it and I had to have it. I don't care about trunk space, the radio, cup holders, or sitting on the engine. The top has holes, the drivers seat is worn, the leather on the shifter is flowered, but I love driving the thing on Nashville's winding backroads and I have close to 190k miles on it. I buy tires for it about every 2 to 3 years and keep the oil changed. I love "that little car" as my wife calls it. Thanks for the review it was good.
I'm glad you took really good care of it and I'm sure you will be too if you ever choose to part ways with it! A clean low mileage post refresh one can go for over $20k!
I bought a used 2003 MR2 with 15K miles in 2005 for $19K. It currently has 78K miles and has experienced no mechanical problems other than having the soft top replaced and the drains in the soft top well widened. This week I test drove a 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF Miata thinking I would replace the MR2 but, while the Miata is clearly the better vehicle (with 18 years of technology and at $36K it should be), it isn't any more fun to drive than the MR2. I'm sticking with the MR2 until it starts needing serious mechanical repairs.
You're probably going to own it for another 15 years and 120k more miles before it needs serious mechanical repairs since it has the Corolla drivetrain lol.
One of the most balanced, accurate reviews I have seen on this car. Well done. Get a 2003 model, avoiding the SMT, and you should not have any oil burning issues and also get the better looking refreshed styling.
The SMT works well I still own my 2003 and it is running very well. The way you drive a car is the way it works, take care of the car with maintenance and it will last. If you drive like a maniac then it will die. Also it is not an automatic the car does not go into second gear, by itself you have to change gear manually.
Nice review, I bought my 04 spyder last month. Has 77k miles, 5 speed, the optional LSD, and a leaky top lol. Only paid 5500 though, apparently I bought an appreciating asset. Not selling it anytime soon though that's for sure, it's a hoot of a car!
just had my mrs rod knock on my way to a car meet earlier this month. 2zz + lsd is the plan. My cars also is 6 speed swapped so it can get 34mpg going 80 on the highway
Recommendations: -skip the SMT (makes the car slower and can be problematic/ expensive to fix) -03 TO 05 are best for avoiding precat failure, but that said, get them out anyway (swap to an aftermarket header or take off the factory one, hammer out the material and be sure to power wash the header after knocking the precat matrix out). Wear respiratory protection and do this outdoors. -snap oversteer is highly unlikely. I have an 03 and never experienced it. Drive it to have fun, but like any car don’t push it too hard. -underbracing helps, a lot, and you don’t need much (typically a ‘breast plate’ works very well by itself) -a 6 speed manual swap is fantastic and makes this a great highway car (especially with the Euro spec C66 transmission with the 3.91 final drive) I also will never part with mine.
Great review. Here are my thoughts on all three gens of the MR2. 1st gen was the most twitchy and dangerous in the corners, especially with the dead on center feel from the steering. 2nd gen looks the best in my opinion and most of the twitchy behavior was gone but it weighed too much. 3rd gen drives the best in my opinion and they dialed in the dynamics better than the previous two gens. 4th gen I hope will come out one day! I cross shopped all three gens when I bought my NB Miata but ease of sliding the Miata around won me over an it didn’t weigh that much more being 2,299 pounds.
Owning a decently kept (to my knowledge anyway) 2001 model, I love it, there's a few things I need to do to it but I really love the way the whole car looks, the headlights are a tad big but imo I think it adds to the cars character! and while yes, there is most definitely struggles when it comes to buying aftermarket stuff, generally you'll be able to find something. Great vid! (even though I've only actually watched 4 minutes so far)
I had one of these from new in 2001 and added a Lotus Elise in 2006 and had both side by side for years, I always thought the Mr2 drove very similar to the Elise most likely due to its similar light weight.
I bought a 2003 recently and just love. It's my 100th vehicle and I think this one is a keeper. Bought my first motorcycle at 9 years old and from then I became a Dell boy buying and selling. I'm not a dealer, just the run of the mill guy that just loves all cars and bikes. Some that I restored Classic lost money on others made a small profit. Once own a capri 2000 5 times. Sold it 3 times to my brother in law. Anyway mr2 is staying. Roll on a nice crisp dry day.
I bought a 2000 MR2 a month ago and it's brilliant. It had been in a local farm barn for as long as i remember, only had done 20k miles and the only thing worng with it were the brakes. Just had to clean the exterior from dust and replace the brakes and I got it for £200 and the brake replacement cost me £780 but saying some of these cars that had done triple the miles and were in not the best condition for around £4000 it was an absolute steal. Drives beautifully and the storage behind the seats are very handy. Would definetely recommend it as an excellent car to buy and a very good first car believe it or not, insurance is only £415 and I'm 18 and the mpg believe it or not is extremely good and a decent amount of storage space
Really glad you are enjoying your MR2. I’ve owned a MK2 for several years and my son (18 in September) is looking at a MK3 but insurance is hellishly expensive if he is the main driver (+£4K). Can you confirm who you got insurance through please as your premium sounds way better than what we’ve seen to date.
Owned a 2001 solar yellow from new. Such a fun car. Road tripped with it by adding a rear deck rack, removing the spare (added fix a flat) and soft luggage made just for the rear storage area. Even towed my motorcycle to track days. Cruise control would have been a nice option but not available on early models. Of the many cars I’ve owned the little spyder got the most positive comments and interest.
I bought a Silver 2003 Spyder in Feb. and drive it whenever I can... Its the most fun on winding roads without a motorcycle you can have. "Like you're on rails".:) All it took was a little refresh of the lug nuts (rusted), shifter knob (deteriorated) and change the oil. It runs like its new.
100% agree with the motorcycle statement. I’ve owned a fair few bikes and many cars over the years, and the MR-S is the closest in terms of driving feel to riding a motorcycle.
I was in the market a few years ago for a c5 or a mr2 then doing a 2zz swap (i know, very diffrent cars lol)... then I lucked out and found a 2zz 6 speed swapped mr2 for just over $5k. I do hate I didn't get a c5 a few years ago when they were a good bit cheaper though.
Greetings from the UK. As an experienced Mr2 owner. It is my favourite car to drive for fun. I first saw the MR2 when it first came out. I have had two mr2mk1 and now on my 2nd Mr2 UK Tf300. With only 20,000 miles on the clock. 😎😁😎
I think the concerns about snap oversteer are not totally unfounded, but might largely be a holdover from the SW20. Back in March I hit a deer with my commuter car, so I've been dailying my MR2 Spyder since then, even during several heavy Midwestern rainstorms. The only time it ever really started to rotate enough to scare me was during one of those storms, when I got cocky on the interstate and crested a hill with a slight left curve at nearly 80, and I was able to steer into it and recover instantly. The gen 3 isn't nearly as scary as the rumors suggest, so long as you have decent tires inflated to the proper figures
Here in Europe (specially in UK), you will be surprised how cheap they are. Basically RHD, from $3000-$6000. Here in France, a LHD one starts from $7000 to $12000. Snap oversteer reputation comes from mk1 and mk2, the ZZW30 (mk3) is less dangerous. Imo, the mk3 is very underated, the handling is fantastic. The mk2 is overrated, it's like the dragster one of the 3 Mr2 but that's it.
The MR2 is was more special feeling that the Miata. Miata is a great option but I’d take the MR2 any day. Im waiting till I have the space to get one again and do a 2zz swap.
I regretted selling my original MK3 about 8 years ago so I bought another about a year ago. I love it! However, they are cheap here in the UK, while the S2000 is in a completely different league. If you can get an S2000 for similar money over there then it's a no brainer - get the S2000!
I have watched wheeler dealers for years and wandered how cars held up with salt on roads.I just bought a mr2 spyder in Australia for $10,000 ausie dollars. No rust good service history.Totally a drivers car.Future classic bargain at the moment.
Oof that sad sad sounding stock exhaust. Lotus exhaust for $300 is the best thing you can do besides lowering it as much as possible with progressive springs. Also this is one of the best, most fair reviews I’ve seen on the mr2 spyder so I subscribed for more content!
Sounds like a great idea, but the reality is not so great unless you spend a whole lotta dough having the exhaust system tuned to the vehicle by an expert tuner. My son had one for a while with an aftermarket exhaust system and the magnificent torque curve that that little engine produces was AWOL. It moved all of the power from the bottom and mid range to the top end, so unless you were constantly thumping it out to the red line the vehicle was positively lethargic and our one with the factory exhaust system would leave it for dead everywhere, not to mention the constant horrible drone that had to be tolerated in many driving scenarios and the tendency created by the necessity to constantly rev the car attracting unwanted attention from a certain source, (if you get my drift) lol
I just purchased an all original green 2002 with brown leather seats... in near perfect condition and 90,000 miles for $9,800... I love it. I've owned both the NA and ND MX5 Miata and this blows them both out of the water in the fun factor.
I bought a 2002 mr2 mk3 silver mint condition. With a hard top and a as new soft top.it has 22k miles from new. Full cobra exhaust and better brakes and disc's. I love ❤️ it.
Stock, the car doesnt make much power and is barely impressive. Whats promising is the mid engine platform and light weight, this thing is much lighter than a miata, and only 100 lbs heavier than a lotus elise. You can really throw this thing around the corners and it will eat them up like a piece of cake. Maintenance is easy and cost efficient. I have a 2ZZ engine in mine, no check engine lights, and works like a dream. The 2ZZ redlines at 8,600 RPM compared to 7000 with the 1ZZ (stock). This car really comes to life with the extra power. Some Lotus cars used the 2ZZ engine coupled with a supercharger.
I had one of these about 16 years ago, great car, had many upgrades, the TRD shift linkage was a game changer. Kind of sad I sold it back then but I just couldn't afford two cars at the time and I needed a bigger trunk so I traded it for a Supercharged Mini Cooper S. I was close to swapping the engine for the 2zz as well but just didn't have the time to do it.
I've owned my 2001 MR2 Spyder since new..Also have Porsches (911 4S, 928S4, '03 Boxster S) its so much fun, light, rotates like a Boxster. Just replaced the tires.. only real snap overseer, unintended, happened with the original Bridgestone RE050 tires on dry and light rain - those tires are trash...note a few added updates....cold air intake, racing headers, pre-cat delete, double strut tower braces, drilled rotors, EBC brakes, coilovers, stereo upgrade...all make the car so much enjoyable engine & handling feel and sound without a trashy ride
Want a good laugh. When parked in garage together, the MR2/S looks like a Lincoln Town Car when parked next to my 2013 smart 4/2. it is over 1m longer! Also no storage compared to the w20 platform that had frunk and trunk. Still love my MR2/S and it is now a 2zz/c60/LSD setup and absolutely wicked when valve lift kicks in!
I bought one for $600 with a blown engine and installed a replacement imported 1ZZ in it. I rather drive a Spyder all day long, Miata just screams high school kid and you see them all the time. You almost never see a Spyder on the road, it's so much more unique.
These cars don't snap. If it does something is wrong with your alignment. It's very progressive and even easy to drift if u want. The quick steering is also from the no weight on front with low factory caster.
I took note of the light front end but I did remember hearing people say they are a little dangerous, I didn't feel that which is why I mentioned that at the end. Ultimately, it's up to the drivers, I think with a midengine car, you have to be more cautious because you're slinging around a pretty dense mass behind you. I didn’t feel this was dangerous but I'd advise people to use caution and autocross it to find out how it handles at the limits!
@@Realistick No It's the MK2 that had the reputation for snap oversteer, I've owned both and still have a MK3. Nice review but cosmetically that car is looking a bit sorry for itself. Lol!
Here in Ontario, Canada, good quality used models are now selling for $30,000 to $35,000 each, so they are definitely not cheap anymore. You can get a brand new V6 Toyota Camry for that price!
I have a red 02 in the UK, there is no car(and never has been in 45 years of driving) I'd rather take A-B cross country. As for the storage, if you need to go for a long weekend, just use soft bags, and hang a clothes cover from the hood behind the seats. Why would you want to take anything else?
Exactly, my wife and I went on a 10 day trip around the Sth Island of NZ in our one and never had a storage issue, we even had a lap top tucked behind the pax seat lol
I found a 2000 mr2 spyder here in California for $4200 .. had 119k miles, silver w original top and excellent condition. Unfortunately I spun out hydroplaning after the first year and it was deemed a total loss.
All mid engined cars demand respect and understanding in the wet but the Mk3 has a longer wheelbase than earlier MR2s giving it fantastic handling. The much repeated snap oversteer issue was attributed to early Mk2s. Mk1 and Mk3 do not suffer from snap oversteer, other than being mid engined and needing this respect/understanding. Personally, i prefer cars with minimal overhangs - the longer wheelbase suits the look of the car. When i owned a Mk3, the pods behind the seats were perfect for all my needs. Admittedly weekends away with +1 necessitated soft bags rather than hard cases, but that was fine with me. Stunning car, stunning handling - but does need good tyres.
Love my mr2. Sad to see one in such bad condition. bought one to tell people honestly I do not have space to pick you ip and put a smile on my face. Sadly the rims could not be repaired legally so I have mags bought at the first place i stopped, The one thing that never gets mentioned is that it uses almost no fuel due to power to weight ratio. With that said I just love spinning the rear out with the standard 1zz that is so easy. There is no luggage space due to bigger speaker installs so my work bag is on the passenger seat. This is daddies toy! Sorry people. It cost me around $3000 6 years ago and the best toy i every bought. one thing everyone
Nice review mate, these cars have their own vibes, they should be understood when you’re buying one and they are beautiful for what they are individually, I like S2000 soo much. Also Honda Preludes seem very nice, just saw one(1998) for 2350$ in a very nice shape... but whatever xD Nice to hear that you still work on the Mustang.
@@Realistick it should be fun, can’t wait to experience even just driving first, like I’ll start to prepare to get a driving license soon. But the Prelude is in such a good shape, but yeah, you miss lots of amazing and unique bargains, for some periods of time. Lets see what we’ll have in the future :) because, we’re students, we acknowledge that this period would be a bit tight for us, but it’d change our lives. Wish you the best of luck.
That is true, you might be able to pick up a boxter for similar money but that could end up eating you alive. If you're brave and don't mind something old, maybe even a Pontiac Fiero!
Miata's are also budget friendly with a wider selection of well made after market parts. Also a 50 / 50 weight distribution by moving back the engine behind the front axle. Easier to maintain & work on. My brother had a MK1 MR2 we were going to a Cubs game & he did a 180 degree spin on Lake Shore drive - but traffic was light & no drama. It just showed the snap oversteer on that car. Currently I drive a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top which is a blast & has the fun lightness of the Lotus Elise which it was designed after. I appreciate the lower HP roadsters that require a driver input to extract the performance out of them. Unlike the high HP auto transmission muscle cars with twice the weight.
Being fair this is a review of a 2002 model in 2020. So a car that is 18 years old! And a guy 6'-3" has enough room. Which he will not in an S2000. Best fun-for-the-buck ever, IMO. (I've owned two.) One of the very cool (IMO) engineered features of the MR2 Spyder is that it has DRAINS at the bottom corners of the behind-the-seat storage compartment for the water to go when the top leaks. So it doesn't leak inside the passenger compartment and nothing actually gets wet or damaged. Water is directed out.
Watching your use the stick and clutch work, makes me realize you're needing lessons on how to better make the most of your clutch / manual driver skills. I own one of these, a 1999 MR-2 1.8L Turbo convertible spyder, and it rides fine and clutch is fine. The car holds the road on sharp turns like a cat with huge claws climbing a tree. Thanks for the video. Drive safe..
Everyone in the UK - I own one of the autos and its fantastic! picked up 83k miles no engine problems for £1000. Theyre starting to go up in price due to the Yaris GR popularity and people realising how fun they are to drive.
The MRS is dangerous because it has really high limits but when it reaches them it does it suddenly and without any warning so inexperienced drivers who get over confident will be spun around. It's also extremely dangerous with the wrong/worn tires and also in the wet it can spun around suddenly. Most people are used to brake on corners to gain grip but with the MR2 you have to step on the gas. Any braking or even sudden release of the gas pedal can throw it off balance. Over all it's an amazing car, and there's nothing like it for the price range.
If you own one of these, do yourself a favor: Find/ acquire a copy of The System's Rhythm and Romance album. Go out driving tonight and put on the song "Midnight Special" with your top down. If you like the album, move over to Najee's Tokyo Blue album. In my opinion, some cars pair up weirdly well with certain bands/ CDs.
I was planning on buying one for a daily driver back in November but I bought a CR-Z instead. Love my CR-Z but I regret not buying one of these instead because I miss daily driving a rear wheel drive car.
i binned my 1999 yellow mr2 spyder with 78000 kms into a wall from snap over steer hahaha. is a really fun car and i suggest it a lot. you need to do very little to no modifications to have some fun with this car
Midship Roundabout 2 seater = MR2. Avoid the 6 speed SMT. The manual transmission is the way to go to avoid problems. Not an owner of one but looked it over before buying Mazda's raodster the Miata instead.
One word of warning for those who have never driven a sports midship car. Be very careful accelerating hard on a wet road. Also if cornering hard get the enrty and the throttle setting right, or you will be paying the price. This car is a lot more agile than most of the people who ' test ' them give them credit for. They can be demanding to drive hard and can surprise you in a bad way.
My dad has a Mr. 2. I have the miata, but it's only the 1.6he said that he will do a swap I prefer the look of the miata but the performance of his mr 2 only issue is its looks that in my opinion only a mother could love
Hey! Good review! Love that car.it's me crashing the yellow mr2 At the end of your vidéo!!! It happen on a track Day Day and i push over the limit. All Mr car like to rotate and if you don't réact fast...you spin... The car is fine and always in love with her!!😃
Thank you and I'm glad you and the car are okay! I've definitely heard that they are a bit notorious for that, people have said the 3rd gen was the best handling of the three generations but rear placed, midengined cars always make me a little more cautious than I would be normally. Must have been funny to watch a video and then recognize yourself in it😂
It doesn't have heavy rear as it got 50/50 weight distribution. Also the second most common issue after catback failure is dying electric motor in antenna and it seems like its already replaced in model from the video. You can also swap your engine for 2zz which is almost plug and play and gives you 50 hp more.
Oh, so that's why it had that antenna! I've heard of the 2zz swap, although, it seemed like most people left the things close to stock, I also heard of people slapping superchargers on it. When rotating around corners, the MR2 has the heaviest part of the car in the back, which definitely makes a difference. I should have just said the front end feels light, I might just chop that part out so there is no confusion because that was a huge part of the car's message, one that I talked about earlier with the trunk stuff but I never talked about the rotational difference of rear placed Midengine versus front engine.
US prices are crazy... $11k?!? In London, UK, I paid $3500 with a hardtop... for a 2006 AC + heated leather (and 2006 standard things like LSD + fogs + 6speed)... I sold the hardtop straight away, so it came out at
@@screenarts Most I know of ANYBODY paying in the UK recently was £10k ($12k), but that was a TF300 ("the final 300" - with heated leather, aircon, hardtop and all the TTE extras, like the exhaust!).... and that was in near-showroom condition (
Ahhhh no what toyota did was NOT cosmetic, the pre cats were a HUGE issue, so bad it would blow the engine. As a person who grew up working on 80's nissan z's the fact that toyota addressed that issue is a breath of fresh air. Can't count the amount of nissans with blown comps. That being said looks of a Porsche, handling of a miata, and reliability of a toyota, I'll gladly pay a bit more considering they actually outperformed high end cars
They really screwed you guys in America, in my country these came with hardtops and an LSD as standard. you can also pick up a good example for less than 4k. I sold mine last month in order to buy a 350z. Snap over steer was eliminated with these due to the wide wheel base so is not a concern.
The facelift 6-speed is the one to get. Was that available in the US? My 2005 dark grey model is so much fun (had a blue 2001 before that) and cost £2700 4 years ago… with 76k on the clock.
Strange, I just drove an MR2 and it revs drastically slower, and has terrible rev hang. It revs so slow you cannot just blip the trottle...it will literally do nothing until you've been on the gas for half a second, so heel-to-toe downshifts feel very strange
I got one this spring with aprox. 115k miles, OEM hardtop, TTE (remus) exhaust and TTE (eibach) springs for 3700 USD. I could not pass it with that price.
You have a great taste when it comes to glasses (cuz I have the same ones). Thank God, I live in Europe because these things are pretty cheap (6000€ for a decent one)
In my Country the were sold standard with a hardtop and an LSD. I had mine for 2 years and it was fun but I felt the chassie was far too good for the engine and so sold it for something more powerful.
Small Correction: The 00-02 (pre-facelift) models have staggered wheels. Same diameter front and back, but slightly wider wheels in the rear. Taller tires in the rear as well. Rear hubs have an indent that prevent them from being installed on the front.
Ah, didn't catch that on the pre refresh models, thank you.
@@Realistick Still a solid review. You picked up on some nuances that most reviewers miss.
@@scotched9682 fun fact. In europe all mr2 models had a factory torsen LSD.
@@RuiDuarteyamamoto Basically every country besides the US got the better version of the Spyder with better options (HT, LSD, TTE, 2ZZ)
Also makes it harder finding aftermarket rims in the same size.

Congratulations, I'm glad you're enjoying it and that you have already tended to those seats!
That's awesome!
Where did u get replacement seats mine are tearing up :/
That's cool ! They are great cars. love mine too
That dealer didn't take care of the MR2, I guess they only wanted to sell Miatas.
You were smiling the whole time. That really tells how great 3rd gen MR-2 was made.
Exactly! I'm always having that big smile too when I drove mine !
Came here to post the same quote! Haha! About to buy a 2003 with ~100k!
Would you recommend this for a high school commuter car? It seems like a lot of fun and they get a lot of personality, they just seem a little dangerous.
@@AustinSmith-fo8jg no, get a corolla and save till you can afford this on top of the corolla as well.
Once lowered they look unbelievable.
And handle unbelievably, I know from experience

Drove over 50 sessions on track and many miles on back road and it never snap oversteered.
What a steal, sheesh
What year did you get it? Had to be 2018 or before....you can't get them that cheap anymore. I bought one of the cheapest I could find at $5500 with 127k mikes. I bought it last month.

I’ve been thinking of getting an 03 for 4K at 150k miles 😔 they look too fun and come out so clean with the mods
Ahh, my first car. Still have my red 2002. Working on a kswap now. I will never part with this car
I have a 2004 mr2 spyder in yellow, bought new. Mine has 58k miles, 5 speed. Much better shape than that one. Garage kept, my daily driver.
I'm glad you took really good care of it and I'm sure you will be too if you ever choose to part ways with it! A clean low mileage post refresh one can go for over $20k!
Yellow 04 here as well!
Can I ask why it's a 5 speed? I thighs 03 and on were 6 speed?
@@julianneale6128 My 2003 is a 5 speed. The SMT was a 6 speed.
We have a black 2004 6 speed with a hard top. 75,000 miles. Nice car to drive for sure.

Awesome deal! Congratulations
just had my mrs rod knock on my way to a car meet earlier this month. 2zz + lsd is the plan. My cars also is 6 speed swapped so it can get 34mpg going 80 on the highway
@@nx_Exe Lucky that you already have the 6spd to whack on the 2zz!
Brutal that you didn't get a 6sp.
Recommendations:
-skip the SMT (makes the car slower and can be problematic/ expensive to fix)
-03 TO 05 are best for avoiding precat failure, but that said, get them out anyway (swap to an aftermarket header or take off the factory one, hammer out the material and be sure to power wash the header after knocking the precat matrix out). Wear respiratory protection and do this outdoors.
-snap oversteer is highly unlikely. I have an 03 and never experienced it. Drive it to have fun, but like any car don’t push it too hard.
-underbracing helps, a lot, and you don’t need much (typically a ‘breast plate’ works very well by itself)
-a 6 speed manual swap is fantastic and makes this a great highway car (especially with the Euro spec C66 transmission with the 3.91 final drive)
I also will never part with mine.

Thanks, nice car!
This was the most thorough RUclips car review I’ve seen in a long time
Owned a 2001 solar yellow from new.
Savage review! Delighted to see a tall person describing how it drives....Will be buying one as a daily soon
I went from C5 Z06 to 05 K20 MRS, I loved it so much I got me another 04 stock for cheap before they went crazy in price.
The mk2 is overrated, it's like the dragster one of the 3 Mr2 but that's it.
snapover is nonexistent in mk3 unless you switch the engine
@@EdwinGarcia-jo1kt *To a heavier unit like a k20. The 2zz swap is almost exactly the same weight.
I have yet to push my AW11 S/C that hard, the Advans have likely raised my car's limits higher than mine.
You can't. Unmolested low-mile examples of the S2000 are selling for original list price or more.
Oof that sad sad sounding stock exhaust. Lotus exhaust for $300 is the best thing you can do besides lowering it as much as possible with progressive springs. Also this is one of the best, most fair reviews I’ve seen on the mr2 spyder so I subscribed for more content!
That'sa great idea, this with a lotus exhaust would have been sick, thanks for watching and subscribing!
I love my MR2 Spyder. Owned it new from 2001.
I live in the UK with a 2003 model. I love it, it’s like driving a roller skate!
Interesting thing to note 2003+ (facelift cars) came from the factory with chassis bracing under the car for even more rigidity.
Yes indeed!
Yo where's the best place to source a 2zz, my 1zz is knocking badd
Awesome review man! I went to IU! Still in southern Indiana. Great seeing Bloomington roads again 😄
Was blessed to pick up a 2001 with 78k miles nine years ago for $6500 (discounted because the softtop had damage). Delightful car to drive
I'm driving a 2003 MR2 Spider, bought new and I've put almost 180,000 miles on it already. I have the 6 speed SMT transmission..

Here in Ontario, Canada, good quality used models are now selling for $30,000 to $35,000 each, so they are definitely not cheap anymore. You can get a brand new V6 Toyota Camry for that price!
The used market as a whole is outrageous right now in North America
I have a red 02 in the UK, there is no car(and never has been in 45 years of driving) I'd rather take A-B cross country. As for the storage, if you need to go for a long weekend, just use soft bags, and hang a clothes cover from the hood behind the seats. Why would you want to take anything else?
Exactly, my wife and I went on a 10 day trip around the Sth Island of NZ in our one and never had a storage issue, we even had a lap top tucked behind the pax seat lol
MR2 with a 2ZZ is a beast at autocross.

Fj review was dope, so is this one. Keep it up.
Sadly the rims could not be repaired legally so I have mags bought at the first place i stopped,
The one thing that never gets mentioned is that it uses almost no fuel due to power to weight ratio. With that said I just love spinning the rear out with the standard 1zz that is so easy.
There is no luggage space due to bigger speaker installs so my work bag is on the passenger seat. This is daddies toy! Sorry people.
It cost me around $3000 6 years ago and the best toy i every bought.

Well... if you want a mid-engine car, definitely this is the most budget friendly!
I have a red 2001 bought bought new. Great looking car fun to drive and it’s so rare now it really turns heads. I only have 40k miles on mine.
Being fair this is a review of a 2002 model in 2020. So a car that is 18 years old! And a guy 6'-3" has enough room. Which he will not in an S2000.
Best fun-for-the-buck ever, IMO. (I've owned two.)
One of the very cool (IMO) engineered features of the MR2 Spyder is that it has DRAINS at the bottom corners of the behind-the-seat storage compartment for the water to go when the top leaks.

I would take this model over the earlier ones. It has such good canyon carving potential.
we had lsd as standard in UK. Optional body kit, roll bar, exhaust

Must have been funny to watch a video and then recognize yourself in it😂
@@Realistick Oh yeah
Really strange.did'nt beleave! Good luck with your vidéo.cheers
I think your example might have a short shifter kit. My shifter is long mushy throws. Yours looks nice and tight 👌
I should have just said the front end feels light, I might just chop that part out so there is no confusion because that was a huge part of the car's message, one that I talked about earlier with the trunk stuff but I never talked about the rotational difference of rear placed Midengine versus front engine.
its definetely not 50/50. its something close to 42/58 or so.
Bought my mr2 with 120k miles in 2017 for $3900.
Currently sitting at 149.8k with a knocking 1zz. 2zz swap is the plan. Already c60 6speed swapped
US prices are crazy... $11k?!? In London, UK, I paid $3500 with a hardtop... for a 2006 AC + heated leather (and 2006 standard things like LSD + fogs + 6speed)... I sold the hardtop straight away, so it came out at
In California we have no rust. Still available with under 10k miles for around 20k.
I talked about this in the end.
late 2005 has revised engine. 2003/4 are not exempt from excessive oil consumption
You could get a factory hard top for this car but I was told they we’re quite pricey and only available where there’s snowy winters.
They really screwed you guys in America, in my country these came with hardtops and an LSD as standard. you can also pick up a good example for less than 4k. I sold mine last month in order to buy a 350z. Snap over steer was eliminated with these due to the wide wheel base so is not a concern.
I love this care. But i hate how long the wheel base it. They should have kept it short like the miata
The facelift 6-speed is the one to get. Was that available in the US? My 2005 dark grey model is so much fun (had a blue 2001 before that) and cost £2700 4 years ago… with 76k on the clock.
Stick a 2zz MAF on it with intake and you will get up to 155bhp according to Dannydc2.
Strange, I just drove an MR2 and it revs drastically slower, and has terrible rev hang. It revs so slow you cannot just blip the trottle...it will literally do nothing until you've been on the gas for half a second, so heel-to-toe downshifts feel very strange
as a PC master race connoisseur, I enjoyed the 120 fps comparison :D great review man
Great review with a wealth of info! Love my '03 Spyder.
I got one this spring with aprox. 115k miles, OEM hardtop, TTE (remus) exhaust and TTE (eibach) springs for 3700 USD. I could not pass it with that price.
Sheesh, insane deal, I was watching cars at auctions go for twice that with much worse specs!
@@Realistick btw. it was in Europe, but normally these come twice more with no hardtop! I guess I was lucky😅
Bro got the subscribe just for shooting this in Bloomington
european models (apparently) came with 6speed manual and LSD as standard :)
12:40 hello I dig this video. I thought on the Spyder (mk3) the snap oversteer was not nearly as much of an issue?
Thanks, and yes, it wasn't, I found out for myself during this video! And people have commented the same thing, mainly affected the previous gens
You have a great taste when it comes to glasses (cuz I have the same ones). Thank God, I live in Europe because these things are pretty cheap (6000€ for a decent one)
I have a mr2 love the car to death but I hate that they made it a 1zz highly recommend k24 swap
In my Country the were sold standard with a hardtop and an LSD. I had mine for 2 years and it was fun but I felt the chassie was far too good for the engine and so sold it for something more powerful.
