  • The tithe was commanded in the Garden of Eden, for the Old Testament saints, for the New Testament saints and forever.

Tithing has long been a topic of discussion and debate among believers 🤔. Rooted in biblical principles 📖, tithing is the practice of giving a portion-traditionally 10%-of one’s income to God’s work 🏛️. In Malachi 3:10, God challenges His people, saying, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse... Test me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven.” 🌧️💖 This verse encourages us to trust God with our finances 💵, believing that He will provide abundantly 🌿.
However, some question whether tithing is still required under the New Testament of grace ✝️. Jesus emphasized generosity and cheerful giving from the heart ❤️ (2 Corinthians 9:7), shifting the focus from obligation to willingness 🤲. Rather than a legalistic requirement, giving should be an expression of gratitude, faith, and love for God 🌟.
Ultimately, the question of whether to tithe is a personal decision between an individual and God 🙌. It’s not about the amount but the attitude of the heart 💕. When we give faithfully, whether through tithing or other forms of generosity 🎁, we acknowledge God's provision and demonstrate our trust in Him. Whether one tithes or not, the key is to give joyfully and sacrificially as an act of worship 🎶. (1 22 25 TITHING - TO TITHE OR NOT TO TITHE THAT IS THE QUESTION)

Thank you for clarifying. We have always discussed about it at home and couldn't understand it.

So profound! I'm blessed to have asked you about tithing! I have been tithing for a number of years now but yet not consistent due to some negative narratives that I came across!
For some good time,I have been asking the Lord to help me understand this...Day after I sent you a message asking about tithing,I was inspired to read Mathew 23:23 and my eyes were enlightened! I'm so grateful to God that you have mentioned it as well! This was a confirmation!
You did so well taking us back to the Garden of Eden..wow..I loved it!
My motivation in paying the tinthe is obedience and as well acknowledging God as my source.
Thank you Dr David! I'm blessed!

I am glad this was a confirmatory benefit to you, the Truth is that tithing is a command, not to tithe is robbing God (really poor idea).

To share a different perspective, it isn't that the Old Testament has no relevance, it's that the Old Covenant has been fulfilled. The first mention of a tithe in the Bible is in Genesis 14 where Abram submitted 1/10th of the spoils obtained in battle to Melchizedek in exchange for bread & wine. There's no biblical evidence he ever "tithed" again, that he established any tithing system, or that his tithe was required by God. The next mention of a tithe is in Genesis 28 where Jacob made a conditional promise to tithe if God would provide as he envisioned. This conditional promise gives rise to the fact that tithing was not a biblical requirement by God at that time or prior. All biblical, compulsory (required) tithing began (Leviticus 27:30-32) and ended (Hebrews 8:13) under Mosaic Law. 3 different tithes were specifically purposed and received through either the tithe of the land or the tithe of the herd. All within Israel. All under Mosaic law. All from organic, consumable items. All were God-made, not man-made. Interestingly, there's no such thing as a biblical tithe received from earned wages yet it's evident money was widely traded and wages were earned during those times (Haggai 1:6). Not from a Jew or Gentile. Not under the New Testament or Old.
What's interesting about the book of Malachi is that the narrative is confined to the nation of Israel (Malachi 1:1) and further narrowed toward the Levitical Priests (Malachi 1:6, 2:1, 3:3). The tithe indictment in Malachi 3:10 can't be universally applied either historically or currently and it had nothing to do with money. It was upon the Levites / Levitical Priesthood to BRING the WHOLE of the tithe items to the temple storehouse. Apparently, the Priests were being selective in keeping the better items for themselves. That would be consistent with the indictments against the Priests in chapter 2. The "curse" would be a lack of rain and pests that would devour crops which would be a detriment to the whole nation. The blessing would be opening the "flood gates of heaven" (rain) and rebuking the devourers of the crops. Once again, nothing to do with money.
There's nothing wrong with choosing to tithe if one is able and feels led to do so. The problem arises when today's version of tithing from earned wages is taught as a universal, ongoing biblical mandate. It isn't and it never was. Tithing isn't a Christian doctrine. But yes, we should support our local church, other ministries, and charities financially and otherwise as we're able. So if we see tithing as a "get-to-do" there's no biblical argument. But we're free to give, not bound to pay. Blessings in your giving!
