Great tutorial. Though one thing I noticed was, when I set the 3005 TANK > TNK_VOLL_ANZEIGE menu option from 8 liter to 8.5 liter, it set the "Increase electronically limited fuel capacity" back to "Unassigned". So I had to go back and set that to "Active" which I then noticed it set 3005 TANK > TNK_VOLL_ANZEIGE back to 8 liter. The end range of my Rex is still greater than before, so that's a plus.
Thanks Joel - very helpful video. My new-to-me 2014 i3 REx already had the Hold State of Charge function coded, but still had the smaller gas tank. I just unlocked a bit more range with your help.
Dude, im so happy i found this, I have to pick up mine in Kansas city and i have a 3 hour drive and I want to have the Hold state activated. I ordered the adapter. Thank you!!!!
Hi! Joel, excellent video. I just did my 2014 i3 REx. Never got into the expert mode, but it worked fine and test it today. There are a lot of other things you can do with the BimmerCode app, it worked great for me with a Veepeak OBD BLE. Thanks for the nice video!
Got it from play store. Cool. I will try coding my i3. I want to reduce seatbelt warning chimes. I know i should wear a seatbelt and i always put it on. I dont need a warning chime every time I get in the car.
Hi Joel received my connection kit through Amazon ...Beamer code offered a 20% discount selecting their choice of interface is about $25. Did the coding all was well until I tried changing the automatic Rex start up from 7% to 15% did the coding and the head unit freaked out said that the pedestrian warning was disabled go to the dealer , it stopped other functionality I could drive it but that’s it. boy was I scared! I used the back up and was able to recover and start over. All I got to say is be careful. Glad for the back up!
@@JWard2 Hi J. you didn't understand me... the head unit stopped all functionality. Like I said I was able to drive the i3 but that was it, until I re-code using the back up to regain control. is there something I missed?
Mike, the units of measure are in hexadecimel, and in increments of 0.5, so if you used expert mode and tried to change when the unit comes on to 10% of charge, you need to use a hex converter, and enter the appropriate value for "10."
Great video, I’ve spent $2,300 for an NBT EVO head unit from BimmerTech to get Apple CarPlay on my 2014 Rex. Your coding walkthrough works perfectly for the original stock head unit but when I use the aftermarket unit, it doesn’t allow me to configure the SOC. I like my new head unit, but may need to sacrifice putting the original one back for the sake of longer range😖
Is it necessary to change the tank liter size in the last step if you used the automatic settings change? I’m not as concerned about the display range as long as the extra bit in the tank is available for use.
Thank you for the video, very helpful. Did you ever move the tank threshold from 8.5 liters to 9 liters? If you did was it typed in just 9.0 liters or done on HEX measurements? Thank you
Wow brilliant! Just what I need to cross the entire west coast on my 2014 i3 Rex. Thanks! Btw, BimmerCode says the latest Vgate Bluetooth no longer works and recommends other adapters.
Thanks Joel for the great video I ordered my connector from Amazon should receive it today my question is how do I make an initial back up so if I have to go back to stock set up before I start coding or does it do it automatically?
Question after doing the hold for the battery in it for some reason it shows me the most range in the eco-pro and less in the eco-pro plus is that the way it supposed to work
Do you know if there is a way to code it where the power folding mirrors fold in when you lock the doors instead of having to press the button manually to fold them in?
I followed all your steps and all perfect but how did you get your gas to show 99 gallons? I was able to get the extra half gallon limit removed but tank won’t show higher than 75. Thanks
Kirk Turkey I think the gas range was optimistic when it first reset. I’ve seen the range estimate change wildly with weather and driving history, but usually I get about the same 75 mile estimate
How effective is the rex at maintaining the state of charge on the battery? If you're rolling down the highway at 75mph with the heat or a/c blasting, can the rex keep up and maintain the charge or will it still lose a charge, how rapidly, etc?
Anything above 70 or inclines and the battery will slowly drain, AC too, although I didn't notice much difference. When driving a full tank empty on the highway I'm used to seeing the battery drop maybe a third or half a bar. So if you're planning on a cross country trip with no slow speed driving to give the generator time to charge up, the battery will definitely drain. It's a shame the rex can only be set to maintain charge and not increase it. Also, the cooling fan will run a few minutes after parking and that seems to drain the battery a bit too.
oh yes, it works for me.. after a while at that speed with ac it may go down to 70% or less but it really doesn't limit your range, except after 70 miles you will need some gas.
I am able to maintain 74 on my REx and remain at the same battery level on level ground with no A/C. My car is a 2017, and supposedly the Rex makes a little more HP than 2104-2016 models. With the hold mode (like in the video) though, you can engage it at 75% battery. At that point you can maintain any speed the car can go, it's just you'll use some battery. Much less than you would without the Rex running. So you might drop from 75% battery to 65% battery over 50miles of driving at 85mph. It's still not the car I would choose for a 1000 mile trip at 100mph, but that's why there are rental cars...
One thing I've noted is that you can turn on your cruise control/auto distance control, and not actually set it. Just hit the button to activate it. With it activated, you can change your "mode" down to Eco Pro + (the lowest) and exceed the normal 56 mph restriction. If I'm really concerned with distance - ie. super late at night - I can stretch out quite a few more miles that way. Along with the range extender and being able to turn on the "hold" mode at will, it gives a fair amount of flexibility.
Do you or anyone else know whether this is a safe thing to do for a 2020 i3. I’m reading on the Bimmer app, but it’s for the 60 amp battery ? I believe my car has the largest battery that you can get in the 3 and before I go into the coding, I want to be kind of certain that it’s not gonna be horrible to the car My goal would be to unlock the fuel capacity to be able to turn the Rex on whenever I under 75% would appreciate any input
It's a G.O.M, so it's trying to calculate how far you can go based on your driving style, and probably other things like temperature and maybe battery health. If you hyper mile for a a few drives you should see the number of miles you can drive increase as the G.O.M does its recalculations
Hi. Stupid question. But how do you get 94 miles of electric range on a 2014 model? My range shown rarely goes over 72 miles. (I checked my max.batt.kappa at 18.2).
Jerry FromUSA I did a 1000 mile trip on the REx and I haven’t had an issue yet. Actually driving with the REx on more seems to be good for the car and I’ve had fewer CEL or ‘drivetrain malfunction warnings’ since coding. Most forums say it’s hit or miss with the service centers. The backups get the ECU’s back to stock so usually it’s not a problem. Of course any coding beyond of what the car was made to do could cause legit warranty voiding problems so I wouldn’t do anything the car wasn’t designed for.
HI Lowko, if you are on the FW, say going 70 you can hardly hear it! Say if your going up a steep grade you will hear the rpm increase & get considerably louder
I have swaped the small display of my I3 2015 Rex with the large one I coded the new screen and activated the video in motion, every thing seems to work just fine but videos are not playing, when playing a video file it plays the sound only, I do not know what shall I do to get it to work do u have any Ideas ?
Derrick Snell Yep! All in all the app and OBD II adapter cost me around $50-60. Having my own adapter was a good investment too, cause now I can inspect fault codes which can happen fairly often especially when using the REx.
Code changes allow you to access services and features that, by default, are (for various reasons and regulations) are turned off. Some (US) disabled features are: AM radio, watching movies on your iDrive display (great while sitting and charging your car), changing your tank capacity from 1.7 gallons to the complete 2.5 gallons (the US restricts full capacity for EV/eco reasons), activating HSOC (hold state of charge) which gives you the flexibility (under 75% battery) to turn on your REx (range extender). For long commutes, HSOC is good when I'm looking to get the best efficiency-- using REx on the highway when I know I'll have little regeneration ability.
@John Edwards Yes, I'm having issues. My HSOC is ok but my tank capacity was changed. This is the second time it's happened. It's a pain hunting down a "coding guy." So I'M gonna be THAT guy. 😝... I just ordered cables and coding software. It's should arrive tomorrow. I'm in I.T. and am comfortable with hardware, so I'm going to put the changes back in.

The concept of the 'extreme hybrid' or range-extended car is tantalizing.... yet VW won this race, back in 2008 with their X1 design. I can't understand why others aren't going in that design direction.... the i3 sure misses the mark. I find this car to be very underachieving!
