another amazing video! A few suggestions, and I want to be very constructive here, not criticizing at all! - Diswasher. I know some disagree with me but no, I don't want a PCB in my dishwasher. There is LEAD on those joints and all sorts of chemicals. It's a small board, a small container with soapy water and a brush will do wonder :) If you get some Electrolube SWAS, even better :) - I'd check that switch with a multimeter in continuity mode - I know it's cool to show on camera but I would have dipped that case "as is" in a bucket with soapy water! Too bad tar cannot be washed out so easily from people's lungs... OMG!!! Amazing!!!

I do genuinely love getting feedback :) But I get the sense you like to understand the "why" of things :) - Dishwasher: that's a good point, and something I should've mentioned in the video actually! I wouldn't use my household dishwasher, this is an old one at the office that doesn't get used much. I tried manually cleaning the first couple boards, and the dishwasher was LEAGUES better at getting the tar out of the little tight spaces. I've since moved on to the ultrasonic anyways, but did like how the dishwasher performed - in my limited office context - I'll check the switch, thanks! I might hit you up for some advice on that when I get around to the Classic II that I stole the good switch from :) - I *always* give computers a wipe-down before disassembling. Especially when they're this gross... but it's more a cleanliness / OCD thing. I don't what the dirty components all over the workspace, and I don't like handling the grossness even with gloves. It's not for the camera, it soothes my brain to clean immediately and as I go.

For your ultrasonic, give SWAS a go - it's expensive but it just works magic with a brush. Can be re-used. Good to hear it was not your household washer! For the rest, I can very much understand! I've seen those switches which feel mushy before. The Mac Plus I got had a SERVICEABLE switch, with a hole at the side where you could stick a cotton bud and clean the actual contacts!
I’ve been waiting for another video! I’ve seen some people reflow chip legs and other connections to tackle corrosion, seems to work pretty well. I suspect that your power issues are probably cracked solder joints on the logic board. I was thinking about getting a compact mac but like you I just don’t think they’re powerful enough. Mid 90s Mac games are my soft spot. So many amazing 3D games, especially the flight sims (F/A-18 Hornet is definitely my favourite). As always thank you for making some of the best vintage tech videos on RUclips. :)
Aw, thanks! I don't want to spoil it, but have already solved the power issues :) I somehow now have 5 compact Macs in my collection (parts & future projects) and the form factor is amazing! They are so small and portable, and relatively easy to work on. But yeah, I like to only long-term keep computers I have a real use for... and that's harder with these. I know prices are ridiculous, but have you considered a Mystic Color Classic? Is an 040 enough for the games you like?
@@iiidiy Yes I’d definitely want one of those. I should go hunting in recycling centres because realistically I’m never going to buy one on eBay or Facebook. The size would be perfect as well.

Thanks John (Mr. Big Bad?)! I haven't recapped the analog board yet... I usually do a visual inspection of those caps, and only replace if there's signs of failure -- either leaking or behavioural issues. There are definitely some analog board behavioural issues here, but I tackle that in the next episode :)
@@iiidiyYes.... All Macintosh Classic and Classic II analog boards need fully recapped. If you look in your restoration video, you can see the copper corrosion from the leaking capacitors in the area that you have reflown twice now. They need changed.
@@THEtechknight Thank you! I definitely had a blind-spot about this. I was looking at the top side of the board where the caps are, and didn't see signs... but if you pause to think about it for even a second, of COURSE the signs would be on the copper traces below. D'oh! And it's right there, not so subtly hiding in plain sight. I'll fix this, and watch out in the future. Really appreciate the advice, thanks!
This was well produced but I feel like you tried to do too much in one go without verifying your work as you went. Did you try booting the machine before cleaning and recapping the board?
This video was shot over several days... it was a deep clean and initial evaluation, with only one early troubleshooting step to try and then verify, but maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. I'm very open to specifics! I didn't try powering it on because the logic board was left unplugged by the previous owner, cap juice was all over the board, and it was covered in very smelly tar. It had to be deep cleaned, just to be allowed into a smoke-free home ;) So that was the starting point before troubleshooting could begin.
