So this is my 3 year old's absolute favorite "cartoon" right now. He was obsessed with whales but just recently became obsessed with bats also. I played this for him and he prefers it to the 1 annoying bat cartoon that exists. Well he is just crazy about this video! He calls this the "yell yo bat". He is just the happiest little toddler for the whole 4 minutes this is playing. Can who ever made this please make more?! 😆
Everybody else: "My teacher's making me watch this! I'm using this for school!" Me: Using this to improve the design and scientific accuracy of yet another one of my invented dragon species
Thank you for creating this video. This ability is actually quite beautiful. I first learnt about echo location in a documentary about blind people who use it by making clicking sounds to create a projection of their immediate environment in their minds. I actually came across your video after first wanting to hear the song of a Bluebird, and it sounded very much like something I had heard before but could not immediate recognise, and this eventually came to me as a memory of when I had heard some kind of echo location or sonar in the past. I still can't remember where I heard it from. Weird stuff.. weird science! I loved that movie.. But anyway! I'll end it hear as there are literally almost infinite tangents that I could go on here. Thank you once again.
Fun fact: If the reflected sound waves reach our ears before the completion of 0.1 seconds, then our brain does not perceive the original sounds reflected as separate sounds.
this is only partly true. below certain timescales we do not perceive two distinct sounds BUT we do perceive differences in "qualities" of sound and thus can distinguish them. if we take a nominal speed of sound at 342m/s (humidity, air pressure, etc cause this to vary) after we are less than about 3.5 meters from an object, the echo becomes a "quality" of the sound.
Great explanation! I particularly liked the amount of detail in the actual biological workings. One minor thing though; the ending implies SONAR/RADAR took inspiration from animal echolocation; but I believe SONAR/RADAR technology was developed BEFORE the discovery of echolocation in animals... although the latter does continue to offer inspiration as we learn more about it :)
I once had a stupid teacher who kept telling me that bats are blind, while even the books we had for class clearly stated that they are sensitive to light(yeah, you need to have sight for that, can't be sensitive to light if you are blind). It's obvious they use echolocation to help with hunting and seeing in the dark, and not because they are blind, but because it's just hard to see in the dark over great distances.I even had an argument some some geek that had grandma glasses, with the processing power of a dead plant, who also kept telling me that bats are blind, even tough he knew that they were sensitive to light and had EYES ! I mean. I mean, you don't need more proof for this other than knowing that they are sensitive to light and have eyes.
It is true that SONAR was developed by studying bats. SONAR was developed pre 1920 and modern work on bat echolocation was done starting in the 30s. griffin and galambos seminal work was published in 1941. the major work was published from the 1950's on
I need help understanding my question. Please help. I was walking my dogs down a dark path and I hear what sounded like birds chirping. However, It was 9:45pm so I knew it must have been bats. I could not see anything but I heard them flying around and chirping and my dogs were acting different. But out of no where i heard this high frequency sound like a house alarm that has has gone off past the first minute, except it wasn't as loud but it was just as piercing through my ears... my question is how is it or why can i hear them using echolocation? I also hear high frequency sounds that machinery make, also sounds that are used to keep rats away from homes. The home owners say they cant hear anything and they tell me it is a device to keep rats away. But i can hear it too... and its very irritating.... help??? Or atleast where do i look for my answer?
I live in Eastern Washington and I hear the clicking also and I see what looks to be a very large flying animal at night I try to make the clicking noises as well and they will swoop down on me and circle my house then later, days later I will hear the screeching the clicks will be gone from whatever this animal is! Could it possibly be an owl?
Echolocation concept is like radar concept we(humans) use today i order to detect object location and distance. This technology had been created by God for a long time ago for Bats. They bats use voice and we humans use electromagnetic wave

my teacher is making me watch this even though wild cratts already taught me this 5 years ago
Humans can’t hear the frequency of a bat
Me: pft! I can hear them clearly
oh! that's how batman can move!
Lol
Bats are what inspires humans to build radar.
Finally found out how echolocation is really goes!!!
thx
Echolocation is Coolest Ability in the Freaki'n Earth
insert fish which launches water from it's mouth outside of the water body to drown flying insects
Electric eels with Electrolocation:
actually only works in water

May Allah take mercy upon the souls of the non-believers who disrespect the bat.
Wow this was actually very thorough and very informative good job! 😇
oh man this video is concise and perfect it deserves way more views . liked and subbed

Awesome video! I love bats now XD
very useful demo !
sometimes I use echolocation to know if my mom is near when eating at the middle of the night
dude this was so helpful im using it on my scinece project fo school

thanks for explaining still confused but you nailed it
Thank you this video really helped me :D
Awesome video! I love bats!:D
no one cares
Wow thank you for learning me I will subscribe and like
thanks for giving me information
Nice information..
who else’s teachers making y’all watch dis? 💀
Me I’m using a wired YT account
thank god i’m not the only one.
Yup, ur not the only one. who knew i would still be learning about bat's "sight" 12th grade (im 19)

very nice
thank you so much for that info, no I can definitely an a on science
ok
Here after Vantage's Echolocation joke after her tactical jump ...

I use echolocation to figure out if the handkerchief has been dropped
The cool thing about it is that humans can learn to use echolocation. Dragons can too. Don’t ask how I know…
how nice
Ahhh so this is how Clickers are able to hear me when I'm trying to sneak around them!!
Finally I understand how is to be like a bat
this is cool
nice facts

Now I won't fail science as much! Thanks! Now I'm only 10 weeks behind on science work :>
Lol same
Thanks! My Brother Does Not Understand EchoLocation so This Made Him Understand and He Called Me Stupid 😂🤣🤣
so we assume that the bat is hunting the three flys. but --what if the bat's environment is very noisy? will it disrupt the bat's senses?

so the corona virus can use echo location. Oof
great
Thanks you saved me at school
I have been looking for a voido
I like it
Wow this in a nutshell I’m a bat and I believe that when I get older I am Batman and I hear things...(no offense this is an amazing fact!)
You know, I was playing Pokemon Heartgold with my Zubat, and I used Supersonic, and that got me wondering, is echolocation somewhat like that?
speaking of membrane hygiene.... mortal bats

Actually its quite simular to vision. just sound instead of light
Thisnkind of video need to be play on schools
