He was a big talking point of my professor when I got into Islamic Studies in university, so I'm very excited for this. If only he had sat throne!
He was very incompetent actually. He wasted his chance many times, the throne was spoonfed by his father as he was his favorite son. But unlike religious tolerance, grabbing onto opportunities wasn’t his strong suit.

Dara was beheaded in delhi and aurangzeb even refused to see his head and exclaimed "unlucky" when he got the news the dara is successfully beheaded

Ideologies on the premise of 'Death to Infidels' disguised under the vail of religious kindship need not apply to be referred to as such. Islam is a predatory ideology with violence as consequences. If you take a magnifying lope and look historically, even the days of worshiping the sun, cows made of gold, lighting producing storms presumed as signs from God, they're all ideology based. And as you said and I agree, none of them have proven themselves to have much substance. That said, I still firmly stand my by post in relations to Islam and the role it plays in today's society. Today's religious based predatory chess like games. Having bylaws of violence as consequence against nonconformers labeled as infidels is a danger to todays globalized efforts of a united freedom to worship humanity.

As a muslim I've always looked/looking something that connects specially Dharmic traditions and others. Because there has to be if God is one..and he created everything...one simply can't ignore good things just because he don't like tha fact that which is known from another faith.. eventhough the world is corrupted the idea behind the stories must came from some truth..

Definitely. Although I'm disappointed the host didn't once mention Shahzada Dara Shikoh's relationship with the 7th Nanak of Sikhi Guru Har Rai Sahib. Although their meetings are not yet fully known, the Crown Prince and Guru were in fact acquaintances. Dara Shikoh when fleeing from Aurangzeb's Army after his loss at Samugarh requested his friend Guru Har Rai's assistance upon reaching the Beas River near Goindwal. Guru Har Rai placed his Sikh Army as a blockade which stopped Aurangzeb's forces for upwards of 6 hours yet only delaying the inevitable for his execution.

It was one of the greatest tragedies of indian history !! He had all the qualities of a utopian emperor, he could have been someone even greater than akbar. The reign of aurangazeb is what made native indians loose their faith in mughals this ultimately led to the mughal-maratha struggle which destroyed the mughal empire forever, the marathas by the time they conquered most of india had become really weak due to the constant afghan invasions and this paved way for a british india !!
Actually Maratha already won back india from mughal before british came here. Some people still believe that british helped and saved indians from mughal tyrants.

Dara was a weak commander. Despite his tolerance and interest in native customs he would not have been able to hold the Empire together with his lack of military and political experience.

@@byron-ih2ge He was actually. Jalaluddin Akbar was an adept commander and shrewd politician. Dara was neither. And the fault partly lies with his father for not sending him out on military campaigns and training him in the art of politics. Akbar on the other hand had to fight battles from the early age of 13 and his father and Bairam Khan taught him well.
I came to understand for when I was wandering somewhere in researching about the real history of Mughal in India, Akbar and Dara shikoh where are the real heroes. But by the partisan attitude of Muslim historians in India they have been sidelined this history. Dhara Sikho formerly written some serious articles for regaining the mysterious and mystic realm of the world. Now very much thank you for this presentation.

As a western Vaishnava and general student of world religion and mysticism, this marks another intriguing step in my recent fascination with Islam.
Islam certainly seems to have one of the strongest mystical traditions of the Abrahamic faiths, and there is a kind of poetic simplicity to Islam when compared with Judaism and Christianity which I find appealing and quite beautiful.

In one perspective yes it was a noble thing to bring Islam and Hinduism together. However on the other side, Islam was after all a foreign element to India, bringing everything under Islamic terms is at the end of day another form of tyranny.
The fallacy of which was shown when his brother took power and started ethnic cleansing of Hindus and many atrocities from temple destruction to slavery. These leading to decades of warfare and suffering and ending in the restoration of Hindu Rule under the Marathas, and of course the fall of the Islamic Mughals. So… point is, it was a naive idea, though admirable. Also, even if he did last, and was syncretic in his approach, he’s still Islamic and puts that religion first. Why should any Hindu accept Islamic rule, even if the ruler tends to be more tolerant it’s still rule of a foreign religion and king.

The path to be taught is of such difficulty that mere willpower is insufficient to complete it successfully. The source of the student’s devotion must be a compulsion that neither (s)he nor the vicissitudes of fate can thwart. The refusal is necessary to ensure the master’s efforts are not wasted on someone for whom giving up is a viable option.
Sensitive people are not exactly fit for spritual lessons... !!.. they can't control their mind, lust etc..an essential in spirituality
It is common in Zen Buddhism to reject the pupil as a way of filtering out those who arent serious.
If you're sensitive enough to be discouraged you may or may not deserve it but you're definitely not ready.

Great as always. It has always fascinated me that the term "Mugols" which has such negative connotations in Iran, due to the ramifications of their attack and massacre, is on the other hand associated with culture, literature and art in India.
I feel like Dara was onto something very significant, and that if his work was to continue we likely would have seen a potential philosophical and spiritual union and of Islam and Hinduism. We must continue his work.

Wow. I'm speechless. This story is so familiar to me and associated with my childhood experiences...I don't know what to say but that most of my spiritual studies meditative practice was with a Sikh I believe of the more Hindu influence. We did meditate on Om and the mantra was "guru dev." At four I sat in the Lotus position. I don't know why and my parents encouraged me to meditate then although neither were interested in meditation. My mother was an inactive Mormon atheist and father a fairly religiously disinterested American, not Southern, Baptist. By fourteen I was learning yoga and meditation practices from a Sikh mother of a schoolgirl friend. Today after many years of study in philosophy as well as practice in a variety of both Eastern and Western or Abraham religious traditions, I have been working on writing a book on forbidden love during the period of 1100 through time period up to the Enlightenment or Early Modern period of Western philosophy. Specifically romantic love between Christians and Muslims or Jews, etc. Love poetry would be wonderful to read both written in English translation and Spanish. Could you recommend some Sufi and other texts. I am ordering texts by Lala Dad and the other female woman shoes name escapes me right now that you discussed. Anyway. Thank you so very much!!!

When Shah Jahan took Dara to Sai Mia Mir, the great Sufi took the emperor and the prince to Keeratpur Sahib in Punjab where the current holder of the throne of Nanak the 7th Guru, Guru Har Rai was residing. Sai Mia Mir being a great friend and devotee of the 5th Guru, Guru Arjan from the time when they were together in Lahore. There the Guru had built a big pharmacy where even very rare herbs could be found and was free for everyone. The prince was treated for about a month or two, there he received many spiritual wisdoms and became a devotee of the Guru. Even during the struggle for the throne of the emperor, the 7th Guru defended The Prince(Dara Shikhoh) when he was retreating via Keerat Sahib,Punjab.
"Tawheed" is the heart of everything. "The Unity of Being"... "non-duality". This was all really, really interesting. Thanks! I like Dara Shikoh.

If you are going to continue making videos on the Indian subcontinent, I’d suggest doing a video on Sikh religious history. The Sikh religion has many elements of both Islam and Hinduism; which is kinda what Dara was trying to emphasize is his pursuit for religious unity.

Really a great informative video....I am very happy that the nuance of the situation comparing Dara Shukoh and Aurangzeb was so well discussed... In some cases, this shows that Dara was much more religious than Alamgir himself, but Dara's religion as the result of 400 years of islamic revisionism and influenced by the indigenous sufi order's of the subcontinent..After the devastating turkic invasions, the general populace of the subcontinent saw the emergence of less clashing religious Ideas...Bhakti movement started its second run and Sufism adopted Indic ideas which were very much soothing for the political scenario....The issue then comes that, Alamgir, wasn't religious according to those principles...citing the Fatwa-i-alamgiri it can be clearly seen how his principles for the common muslim folk differed from the then contemporary subcontinental Islam... He created the basis of a different house which for the first time in 5 centuries didn't come in the Sufi umbrella...His disregard for the local Hindu traditions and Ideas is the reason why he is still hated( apart from the brutal demolition of the two most sacred temples of Hindus)... Its like he threw away the 1000 years of experience islam have had in different lands and adopted the initial doctrines that were drawn to govern ancient Arabia...Fatwa-i- Alamgir is still a huge influence for subcontinental muslims and is a basis for lots of schools of islam..
I also think we should step back and take a more neutral look at Aurangzeb as less different from his predecessors than what appears at first glance. He too was deeply involved with Sufism. Just like Dara, Aurangzeb also discussed with Hindu ascetics and held many similar ideas. It's interesting that it seems like Aurangzeb's later, more 'strict' enforcement of what be believed was 'Islamic principles' comes from a personal anxiety about his previous sins. When we look at his biography, we can see that Aurangzeb wasn't exactly God's best child, and that he appears almost neurotically anxious abuot this later in life.
@@LetsTalkReligion Yes...this is perfectly true...but documents of other hindu and sikh kings of the time prove the growing conflict among them and the Mughal emerged from his repeated persecution...Chattrapati Shivaji even tried to reason with him...even quoting a verse from the Holy Qur'an..that how Allah is of all not only the Alamgir's...As the persecution and conflict didn't stop...Alamgir's paranoia completely took over him...and more he went away from his Sufi mystic principles..Now..as a Resident of India in a liberal Hindu family...let me tell you that from an Early age our school teachers and parents tell us the stories of Dara and Aurangzeb...and the next thing that we get to know is that desecration of Hindu temples as though done even by other kings (both Hindu and Muslim) ...there were some sacred places which were out of bounds...two of those were the kashi Vishwanath and Krishna Janmabhoomi temple....both of them had been broken numerous times before...started by the Mahmud of Ghazni... But it is that a farman of Aurangzeb that stings...after the Krishna temple was demolished he ordered the Krishna Idol to be buried under the stairs of the mosque that was built in its place...and this thing stung..for centuries and generations the broken remains of the kashi and Krishna temples were shown by parents to their children and told the tale ... If you visit these places it will feel like "The temple Mount" of the Hindus... On the broken remains of the ancient temples you will see islamic tombs... This thing was new for the Hindu population... Shah Jahan supported some of the wealthy Jain merchants and offered them land and other sort of assistance. Thus, Shantidas was granted land in Ahmedabad, where he built a beautiful Temple. No step was taken to prohibit him from doing so until Aurangzeb was posted as a governor of Gujarat and the Temple was forcibly converted into a Mosque. Later, on a complaint made by Shantidas and due to a decree of a leading Qazi that banishing someone from his personal possession is against the Islamic jurisprudence, Shah Jahan restored the Temple to him.

You may not know the Theosophical Society but it is the spiritual movement that is at the origin of New Age, it even influenced Gandhi as he was well acquainted with the Theosophical Society in England, South Africa, and India.

Impressive discourse on the historical narrative of that period of Mughal reign and dynasty. Very interesting indeed on ruling state of affairs during that century. Could you please comment and expand about Deen-E-Ilahi in another of your exposé next time? I once read that was a new concept, actually initiated by Emperor Akbar himself to bring about a synthesis of ideas, worship and practices, from both Islam and Hinduism, under one umbrella of faith and beliefs straddling both religions. My understanding is that after holding numerous Court discussions between scholars from respective religions, he wanted to conceptualise such idea whereby he proposed merging common elements, if not taking best bits of both religious practices, into a new one - thus named it as Deen-E-Ilahi. I learnt such idea raised strong opposition, particularly considered as innovative and strictly forbidden under Islam, and that it was subsequently rejected. I think his aim for such rapprochement was to unify his diverse subjects by following one set of faith and beliefs for better peaceful co-existence exponentially. I might be right or wrong, so please consider it as a future talk - unless, of course, you have touched upon this topic already somewhere else! Thanks and much appreciated.

Dara and Aurangzeb were in fact different in their religious beliefs: Aurangzeb commissioned the destruction of hundreds of temples all over India, Dara never did so. Aurangzeb writes in his personal journal when he was the governor of the Deccan: I had breakfast and rode up the hill with my guards and demolished the place of idolatry (Hindu temple). Islam has been victorious today.
Not that different to what todays hindus are doing to muslims killing them, intimidating them and destroying their mosques. People like aurangzeb and hindutva ( hindu nationalism ) the same

Unity comes from compatibility of doctrines. Not from specific personalities. Tagore and Gandhi and Netaji only spoke of Unity. Tagore started Hindu Muslim Raksha Bandhan. But still the Muslims voted for Muslim League, joined Khilafati movement, did Direct Action Day and displaced Hindus from their ancestral lands. Even now Bauls are attacked in Bangladesh, temples are destroyed in Pakistan. Atheism is a crime in 13 Muslim countries. It's the doctrine, the inbuilt supremacist expansionist attitude that wont let Muslims be. Without that, Muslims would be as peaceful as anyone else.

The Mughals were Mongol but they Turkified & spoke Turkic language they ruled India for nearly 3 centuries during their rule they Persianised India
You're right but just to add to it , with each successive generation they were more and more mixed as Mughals mainly took Iranian and Indian princesses as wives. (Eg. Akbar's & Aurangzeb's mothers were Iranian while Jahangir and Shah Jahan's were Indian) . Also, while the persian influence exerted on India is undeniable the Mughal Culture,as we know today is a beautiful amalgamation of Indian-Persian cultures.

I know that, the term used for their Iranian wives is 'Persian' but in modern context they could be called Iranians, similarly the Hindustanis/Rajputs in present context are Indians.
Dara Shikoh or Shokouh is a Persian name literally means "The Glory of the Darius or Dariush" as Dara is one of the shortened and modernized version of the common Persian name Darius or Dariush. Second of all, Jahanaara her sister's name is also Persian literally mean "the beauty of the world" or "that who is the order of the world". Their father Shah Jahan is also a Persian name literally means "The king of the world". If you're wondering, all the texts you see in this video are in Persian language and not Arabic. It's beyond me as to why the person responsible for these videos, seems to have an agenda to belittle or somehow ignore the importance and crucial role of the Persian language and huge Persian cultural influences.
Anyhow, Dara Shikoh was writing mostly in Persian, and his magnum opuses are first the Majma Ul Bahrain (The Confluence of the Two Seas - between Sufi Islamic teachings and the Vedantic traditions), and also the FIRST translations of the 101 Upanishads into the Persian language. The fact is that his Persian translations of the Upanishads, became the very source for the later most European translations even up to our century. For example, the very Upanishads that the great German philosopher A. Schopenhauer was reading was the one that was translated directly from Persian.
It should be said, that the Persian language was the official language of India for couple of hundred years up until the British invasion times. It was the language of sciences, poetry, literature and official documentations. For more accurate information, please refer to Dariush Shaygan, the Persian/French scholar who was the first person who translated the Majma Ul Bahraina into another language other than its native language, and the title was his PhD thesis as well. Also refer to Henry Corbin the scholar of Islamic history and cultures, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, the well known Islamic scholar.

I'm not even Persian to begin with if that is of any substance to what I just said. I am a university lecturer for the past 20 years in numerous EU universities in the Philosophy of Religion and I know five different languages of the ME region and travelled and lived in both India, Iran, Egypt and Syria for many years. Nationalism of any kind to me is just absurd as it does not have any place in our modern world to begin with.

The Mughal culture is a fascinating and beautiful illustration of how religions co-exist and create a great synthesis; combining Hinduism and Sufism creates such an interesting angle with figures like Kabīr. Also Hazrat Inayat Khan grew up in this culture and it influenced his approach to religion. If only such rich co-existence were more common today!

Thank you for this video. I never learned about Dara Shikoh growing up. You mention that during the time of the Mughals, there wasn’t a dichotomy between what we consider today as Islamic orthodoxy and Sufism. At what point in history did that shift start to happen?

first you need to define sufism, by this if you mean people who left sharia in the name of sufism, then this type of sufism was never together with islamic orthodoxy. by sufism if you mean connecting to Allah so that you can follow sharia of Allah with more love and passion, then this sufism is always aligned with islamic orthodoxy, it cannot be separated at any point. In current times we see less sufi practices because of wahabi movement of saudi arabia. Even though their master Ibn Taymiyyah was a sufi in Qadri sufi order with only one connection to shaykh Abdul Qadir Al Jilani via Ibn Qudama Hanbali. but in these times wahabi rejects and hides the sufi side of Ibn taymiyyah. Ibn Qayyim, student of Ibn taymiyyah wrote a very famous book called Madaarij Us Saalikeen, explaning tasawwuf. Indeed there were many bad practices in the name of tasawwuf, but tasawwuf sciences carried out by good people in beneficial and they are active. All four major schools in Asia, and shaadhliya and tijaniya in North eastern Africa, similarly some schools in west Africa.
It sounds like, in some ways, Dara Shikoh's "philosophy" shares something in common with Sikhism. In fact I found it interesting that he was also involved in the building of the Sikh's Golden Temple.
Dara's brother Aurangzeb tortured and killed the Sikh Guru Tej Bahadur Singh. Obviously, these brothers were different in religious tolerance.

Personally I think the main difference between Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb worldview are that Dara Shikoh, although a muslim through and through, try to put (Advaita Vedanta) Hinduism (along with hiddent truth within other religions) at the same level as Islam, while Aurangzeb seems to hold the supremacy of Islam over all religions.
This may be the crux of why Aurangzeb was viewed later as some kind of champion of (comtemporary) orthodox Islam. And Dara Shikoh as champion of "liberal"-minded muslims. Ofcourse this is mere anachronistic projection, but as I said, the historical context fit well with our modern situation.

I don't know if I agree. It seems to me that Dara still definitely upheld Islam as the supreme religion, but that other religious traditions could also contain true teachings worth exploring. Aurangzeb, too, discussed and met with Hindu ascetics and held similar ideas, but it seems like Dara took this a bit further and more seriously.
@@LetsTalkReligion I've read somewhere about Aurangzeb's unsavory interactions with Sikh community and its leader. What I think is that Dara and his predecessors, although muslim themselves, wouldn't want to coerce minority faith to such degree as Aurangzeb. That is what I mean be "supremacy". Still maybe this is because the main sources of this story was bias against Aurangzeb.
For me, it seems that Dara's willingness to deeply explore and engage with other faiths to such a degree in his writings is one (or even several) steps more than other Islamic figure you've featured (with may be one except of Akbar).

Sikhs fifth guru “Guru arjan dev ji” appointed mian meer to lay the foundation of the golden temple. Sikhism is the religion about singing praises of the one lord the resides in everyone, and how everything happens as according to lords will.
Its kinda like, imagining white light passing through a prism and then the illusion of various colours being castes out. Everything and everyone is the part of white light and doing as being guided.
Jhangir, was against sikhism so he ordered fifth Guru of Sikhs to be killed through various trials.
Mian meer went to meet the guru and asked him why the guru is letting it happen when he can do anything. Guru replied that lord resides in all of us and what is happening is not against his will. When i am with his will, i am with love, and with love, how can any harm come to me?
Thats how later Dhara shakoh met Mian meer, as per plan, and was influenced by the song of love, that can only be heard when one looses oneself.
