  • Ivory Coast Abidjan metro - In this video, we'll look into why Ivory Coast is constructing the $1.7 Billion Ambitious Abidjan Metro. Investment in Africa by country is at all-time high. Ivory Coast’s economic capital has experienced rampant industrialization and urbanization in recent decades. It is estimated that, every day 2 million people spend more than 2 hours traveling to work, using buses, mini cars and shared taxis. This is due to an inadequate public transport infrastructure that generates many nuisances: delays, pollution, security problems. In view of this, the Ivorian government has chosen to entrust, following a call for tenders, the construction of one of the first metro train systems in West Africa to the consortium Bouygues Travaux Publics and its partners.
The Abidjan Metro is a 37.5 kilometre rapid transit network serving the Ivorian economic capital of Abidjan whose construction started in 2020, with the beginning of passenger service expected in 2025. Initially planned to comprise a single line with 13 stations, undertaken by Bouyges-Dongsan, a French-Korean consortium, the project has since then been expanded to a single north-south line with 20 stations, financed 100% by France and built solely by three French groups (Bouygues, via its subsidiaries Bouygues Travaux Publics and Colas Rail, Alstom and Keolis), after the withdrawal of the South Korean partners from the consortium in October 2017.
Built mostly as an overground and elevated railway in order to avoid more costly tunnels, its automated trains with a driver present in cabin will be able to run at a top speed of 80 km per hour and a maximum frequency of 100 seconds. Line 1 of the Abidjan metro is expected to transport 500,000 passengers per day ( which equates to 180 million per year). Construction of line 1 is estimated to cost 1.7 billion US dollars, which is entirely financed by France via the French Treasury and the French Development Agency. The Ivorian government is planning for a second line of the Abidjan Metro, an east-west line which should run from Yopougon to Bingerville.

Its not good at all, this is a Neo Liberal/Neo Colonial French project.France is financing the project by using Ivorian money in French central Bank to pay for the project, then Ivory Coast will have to pay back that money to France with interest, even though its their money in the 1st place. So its perfect example of Neo Imperialism gone mad with France. At least the Ghana Sky train project is being done by a South African Company,so money is circulating in the African Development Bank system, rather than money being sent to Colonial France.
